it's not only that i don't understand how anyone would want to take a perfectly good hobby and ruin it by making it a career.

I have enough problems staying awake for 17 hours a day. There would be NO WAY I could game 17 hours a day and not be a complete basketcase withing a week.

If you're not the only one concerned about his decision then perhaps an intervention will work. However, in order for something like that to be effective, you and whoever else gets involved has to set out clear goals and then everyone has to remain firm on their decisions. Get into the intervention and tell your friend that you respect his decision to live his life but you cannot remain his friend while he insists on pursuing such a dead-end path. Present your problems clearly and concisely, tell him what you think will come of his decisions and leave it at that. If an intervention doesn't work, then he'll have to learn from his own mistakes. Whether or not you stick around to see it happen is up to you.

However, 2beers brings up a valid point. If your friend does, in fact, succeed in some way with this venture then you'll end up being the one learning from your skepticism.

This isn't a very good point though!  If your friend wanted to just go out one day and put thousands of dollars into lottery tickets it's obviously a bad idea, but if they MIRACULOUSLY win it doesn't mean that YOU WERE WRONG SEE???  GUESS IT WAS A GOOD IDEA.  It's still not a good idea, it just HAPPENED to work out when it very very easily could have failed horribly.

Plus, if he makes any money at this, it sure as hell isn't going to last.  He'll probably make money one time AT MOST, and not very much.

I'm not advocating everyone run out and do stupid things, nor am I a fan of the whole "I told you so!" sentiment. I firmly believe that Cyborgasm's friend is going to fail miserably at this rather hair-brained adventure. On the off chance that said friend does happen to succeed then I am willing to apologize for being skeptical and learn from the experience. No where in there did I ever say that his choices were good or sound nor would I ever admit that what he did was a good idea. I will just be wiser for the whole experience.

The only way to stop him is to beat him at his own game. You must join the MLG and defeat him. Just hope it's true and he's not getting massively trolled by some guys over xbox live.

Lmao, South Park WoW montage all over again. x_x

Wouldn't it be funny if he actually DID make over fifty thousand off of this?

But why?  You have every right to be skeptical, and even if he succeeded (by the way, it would take years to even know if he succeeded because like I said he could get money once but it definitely won't last) you have no reason to apologize for being skeptical.  You don't have to learn from this experience because it's such a one in a million shot that if another friend came up and said the same thing you shouldn't go "well this guy did it, i guess i shouldn't be skeptical", because chances are that second friend isn't going to succeed at that same one-in-a-million shot!  It's not a matter of becoming wiser, it's just dumb luck and that doesn't make you wrong to have said it was such a bad idea.

Actually there is pretty much a ZERO percent chance this could be his career because it won't be long before it's some completely different game that all these tournaments are based around, and unless you're that autistic kid from The Wizard you aren't going to suddenly become a top player in it too.  If suddenly no one was playing football, it's not like the football players could just immediately pick up basketball.

not really, these tournaments don't really evolve like that. it's all sequel shit. last year it was halo 2 and guitar hero 2, this year it's halo 3 and guitar hero 3.

still dumb but it's not like they push in new directions, they go from one shitty game to the next shitty game in the series.

yeah but isn't the halo series coming to an end?  that means that there's going to have to be a new game soon

A lot of pros from Halo:CE(the first) don't even play anymore. Halo 2 is the one that started in the MLG scene, and a lot of players that play H2 in the pro scene also play H3 professionally, too. But yeah I don't think that there will be a Halo 4, so either MLG will continue with some other Bungie game or everything else that is already there, which means that your friend's efforts have gone in vain since the Halo series will be no longer be in MLG and also for many other reasons that this is a terrible idea!

There might be more Halo games. I thought Halo 3 would be the last one, but then they went back to the original intent of the franchise and made Halo Wars turn-based strategy game.

I thought "Halo Wars" was an idea by Ensemble Studios or something? Like I know that Bungie originaly intended for Halo to be some kind of RTS but there are two different developers here. I'm not actually sure if Bungie will prolong the life of the Halo series or not.

iirc aren't bungie making like a halo prequel or something like that? besides, most console shooters are the same "right trigger shoot, left trigger grenade, etc." it can't be that hard to pick up a new game

Not many people will actually gravitate from Halo 3 to something else like, I don't know, GoW 3? Like, those who didn't want to play Halo anymore basically just quit MLG all together. They are different games, either you don't have the feel for other ones or you just don't want to play them anyhow. Either way, MLG is a horrible idea to try to make into a career however you look at it unless you're really good, i.e. probably not his friend since it sounds like "Hey, i'll join to become a pro and do awesome." which really is setting yourself up for failure to begin with.

the bigger point is it's hard to think of a more worthless career.

even with athletics you can point to health benefits, a sense of comradery, or hell just providing other people with a good time, but most GAMERS don't even pay attention to MLG, let alone most people. it's trying to ride a gravy train without realizing its a train...powered by gravy???? ITS NOT GOING ANYWHERE!

Dude, this is an expansion to Halo 3. It doesn't even have a multiplayer to it at all, since it just adds to the storyline of the campaign.

And in addition to playing sports professionally, you make a whole lot more money.

EDIT: Damn it, didn't mean to double post.

I agree with mamamack let that fucker hit rock bottom and laugh at him as he falls.

you should try your best to convince him to stay in school while he does this though. A job you can get again but I wouldn't let my idiots drop out of college for gams.
