Ok, I have a suggestion... it's not a perfect solution to everything, but I think it might fix the problem I mentioned on my other post:

Instead of a plain open poll like this, have players POST their votes. That way you can almost guarantee voter have at least played a game. Random lurkers on GW won't vote just because it's too easy. Problem is, votes would have to be reset.

Just a suggestion. And as for the inclusion/removal of Muse, I think maybe a fair judgement call was made, but with wrong arguments.

Anyways, I still have to play Terra Nova, then I'm voting.

Thank you. This is basically what i've been saying all along, and people think i hate the game/makers for saying so.

i dont hate azn, because he's a great rival, we both made the same battle system and then released it at the same time, it was pretty hilarious. (even though he may not be working on his anymore, im still working on mine)

sorry for any misunderstanding.

Ok, here it is.

Nov-Dec 2008 Bi-monthly contest #2 – My Mini-Reviews

I’d just like to make it clear that I always base my comments and my vote on the fun factor. If I enjoy playing it, it’s a good game. If I don’t, it’s not, no matter if it was hard to make, has custom graphics or complicated and original system. Simple as that. But that is, needless to say, personal. I might have not enjoyed a game someone else did.

The Super Astronomical [And ][/And] Space Fish
This game is actually pretty fun, though I wouldn’t say addictive. It took me some time to understand the gameplay mechanics, to realize that the fish got bigger and was able to eat larger fish... but that was actually what I liked the most about the game: this growth concept. Sound and music were nice. Graphics are nice and solid too, but maybe they lacked in variation, or animation... scenery was too static. Overall, it’s a game worth playing, but hardly enjoyable to play more than 3 or 4 times. I guess partially because the whole mouse moving thing is a bit stressful.

Terraformer
I have to say I like the concept of the game... watering trees and protecting your biodome to terraform a planet. But that wasn’t enough to make it a fun game. I’m not a big fan of the gameplay, and it’s too hard, even on Easy level. It definitely needs an easier level... less/slower robots, and an oxygen bar that fills faster. I had to play it about 8 times to understand what was my goal, even after reading help. I guess it just lacked on the entertainment aspect. Music was also somewhat annoying. Graphics were clearly left aside... the entire graphic part of the game seems to have been drawn on Paint in 5 minutes. I understand Farmrush is not talented in this department, but something a lot better would come out with some effort. Like Carius’ Space Fish, the mouse moving thing gets stressful.

Gravity
I think this game is nearly perfect. When I first started playing, I though “cool, a game about gravity, I love messing with gravity”. Then I saw all those question marks and instructions, and thought it was too complicated and gave up. But I gave it a second chance, understood the commands, and realized it was one of the most addictive puzzle games ever. The level of difficulty and variety of challenges is just right. Movements are also very smooth and fluid (jumping, shooting, etc.). And yes, messing with gravity is very cool. If this game lacks in any way, it might be in the graphics department. Graphics are not ugly at all, but neither are nice to look at. Too plain, maybe. Music is also somewhat forgettable. But this is the game that deserved my vote. This one, along with DotPLUS, are the games I’m keeping on my computer.

DotPLUS
This is the game that almost got my vote. Like Terraformer and Space Fish, it’s an attempt to create addictive gameplay based on a simple and original concept. But I would say this is the only one that succeeded. Who would say adding numbers could be fun? Well, it is. I guess the graphics, animation, music and sound helped. They were all well-put together and nice. I also liked the whole Babel tower hacking story. It is a good game, and together with Gravity, I’m keeping this on my computer.

Muse
Nice graphics and sounds, but there isn’t much else to comment on in the version I downloaded.

Terra Nova: Eyes of the Machine
I kinda gave up on this game. I’m a little impatient with intros, and I watched that intro 2 or 3 getting a missing file message. Then I tried adding a random file with the name of the missing file, but it didn’t work. Then I downloaded a fixed version, played for a bit, but I got a missing event message. Then I gave up. Graphics are kinda cool, music is annoying, and I don’t really like the ABS. I don’t like not having played the whole game to vote, but I did try.

FARMRUSH: Terraformer
- You play a spacecraft that looks like a flying saucer.  Your job is to avoid enemy vehicles while shooting and watering the trees down.  That's pretty good right there.  The concept is that instead of destroying planets, you are saving one.  That's some great sci-fi material right there that even James Cameron is beating himself up for not thinking about it first.  Hyperactive music is a plus.  Great job Farmrush.

PSY-WOMBATS: Terra Nova: Eyes Of The Machine
- You wake up from your slumber not knowing what to do.  After a bit of exploring you encounter the doctor and find out you are his creation.  You can shoot enemies with your weapon.  You can shoot enemies while moving and jumping.  Not to mention a protective shield to cover you while roaming around Planet Corinth.  There are some bugs like invalid event page errors, a pretty common error when it comes to dealing with RPG maker games.  Given the contest deadline, they are understandable.  Great Sci-Fi game.  Pretty good choice of music as well.

Thankyou :D

oh, and Terra Nova wasn't JUST psy_wombats, but thats really just pedantics.

I feel really bad for having a glitch-filled game. Most of the work went into the writing and later character portraits. There's another 7 levels besides Corinth that it seems no one has played... Oh well. At least it seems JMickle is getting really good reviews!

I have to say I'm pleased with the reviews. While we did just fine, maybe even good with our graphics and music, we need to focus more on gameplay and have more time to get rid of bugs in future contest entries it seems.

What the fuck? Who was the reliable source who informed you I started before the contest began?

The exact date I began was Halloween. Your rules stated that the game had to be started after the contest posting day, the 30th of October. On that 31st of October, I wrote out the plot. Over the next two months, (until this past weekend) mapping was completed and the first part of the CMS was made. The monday of this week, I created the inventory and created all the cutscenes and events. On Tuesday, lighting was added (which was a little messed up) and we released. In fact, most of the game was created this weekend and the first two days of this week.

Who was your source?

And honestly, I didn't expect my game to win either. I was surprised that I was beating dotPlus and some other games. But I"m guessing you don't like it, and decided to pull some unfair bullshit.

EDIT: Also, there are people who helped me brainstorm the plot and the game's title, at the beginning of the contest (plot being the first thing created.)

There are other people here who worked hard to win their prizes and im not going to rob them of that oppurtunity.

And of course you're going to rob us of our opportunity.

EDIT EDIT:  I am pissed because I worked my ass off to make a release.

Wow, haha. I didn't think I would get romped so badly in this competition. At least I completed the game though, and can make my next one even better.

Thanks for all the reviews, guys.

Nackster man, definitely state a rule in your next contest that X submissions must be submitted by the deadline for the prize money to be applicable.

Also I feel kinda bad for you, I mean you are doing a great service to this community by providing an incentive for members to work and produce games and your rules are entirely reasonable. I think that in future there should be another system so that you don't take the rap if you get few entries.

You could have funding from premium memberships or perhaps even get people to pay $10 each to enter the comp.

That would penalize people who worked their ass off with their entries. I don't see a point.
I don't see the fact that most of the entries are getting prizes as a problem. What I see is a nice collection of good games (some of them REALLY good), and they came to be thanks to this contest. Despite all the arguing and complaining, it's serving its purpose. Right?

2. You may use ANY engine or scripting language. Any type of game is allowed, but there must be some form of gameplay (aka player control over the situation in-game).

I don't see how my game breaks the gameplay rule either, because there is clearly player control. The gameplay also involves exploration.

EDIT: Whoa, post 1000.

EDIT EDIT: Thanks a lot guys, who supported me. It's also nice to know when people have done stuff you like, like your work too. :) (Dragol)

This is pretty much why I didn't have open polls for the winners of my contest. Nobody wants to give away their own cash for a game they don't like, and it's quite clear the only reason it was 'disqualified' is because you didn't like it nackie. I honestly have no problem with you saying 'this game will never win a prize' just because you don't like it, but come on. Just say you don't like it, don't go on some bull about how it 'didn't meet the rules'. If it didn't you wouldn't have included it.

As to my vote: gravity gets it, simply because I found it the most fun.

Yay for Gravity! I was afraid the initial difficulty of the game would scare people away!
