Photoshop brush does not equal lighting effect.

That is a lighting effect though. Nowhere in that picture is ther a stock photoshop brush or any added ones that I've seen, it's just gradients, which should be used for lighting effects.

Chipotle, theres nothing really wrong with that screen, nothing that needs to be changed. It's looking great right now.

And sure, I can post a screen I guess.

yup smooth gradients with pixel-based graphics this is a recipe for success!

Saying that though block colour is a genuine recipe for success and that looks pretty great. Probably shouldn't use such black lines though, maybe a dark form of whatever colour the objects are, or just a single less-saturated colour (a darkish blue or something).

Took me forever to compile these chipsets and I think I compiled a very clean Arabian city series of chipsets.  Here, I show off the courtyard, the commoners ward, market ward and then port.  There's a few chipset errors here and there, but that's just because I haven't set the passability on some of the tiles.

What do you guys think of the city?  Does it give enough of a sprawling desert city feel without being overly large.  This is the entire city except for the entrance from behind the walls, the palace (which I consider a separate location) and the screen off the port where you dock your ship (once you get it).

PS: Sorry for no sound.  Oh, and NPCs need to be added to most of the maps.

You should fix the whole "being able to walk under the fence" problem, either make them unpassable, or make a separate chipset while using a switch or two to get the right effect.

I think those really deep red stands at around 1:20 could have a lower saturation/contrast. It stands out too much. Other than that, very nice.

@oc_gunslinger: Is a great city, indeed!=) My only real "critic" is the port! It's nothing much, but it doesn't give me the "Arabic" feel to it! Should be made out of the same stone as the houses in my opinion!=) And remove those parasols please! Gives me a "french" feeling! Hehe..

I'm trying to draw a faceset to use in a game!

That is my exact thoughts and feelings! And desires.

I also agree that the chipset could use a sprinkling of Arabian-ness, ioo*. Maybe one or two signature Arabian items (as researched on Wikipedia or w/e) tossed in there for good measure. Just for that little je ne c'est quoi or w/e.

I thought that map was just gr8!!+ in terms of composition.

* ioo = in our opinion

IceManual5580: Some of the levitation doesn't make much sense. One of the trees at the bottom doesn't look right either. Otherwise it's really nice, I'm a real Rudra fan!

Thanks all!

@Arulon: I'll be getting rid of those parasols, for sure.  I'm not too sure why they're even there in the first place, I guess I saw the red and needed something to fill up some space.  Bad idea.  I get what you're saying about the port, but my logic is that a giant stone building really wouldn't be built on top of a wooden platform.  I was trying to find something that matched the rest of the city, perhaps I should keep looking?

@Zatham: Any suggestions for a signature Arabian item?  Furthest thing I got were some of the custom/edit windows and some other small custom chips.  Other than that I really can't think of specific items that really scream Arabian, to me it's a general atmosphere, but if you (or anyone else) has some ideas, I'd love to toss them in!

@Neophyte: Yeah, I see what you mean.  I guess I got carried away with trying to infuse some colour into an otherwise boring palette.

Question: What's the easiest way to lower saturation levels?  I use iDraw for most of my spriting needs and the only way I'm aware of is by using the sliders to edit individual colours and that would be tedious.

People smoking a waterpipe could be really awesome if you're able to pull that off.

Actually, I'm working on a Hookah for the interior chipset as we speak.

I finally got around to making interiors for this town. So this is a bar, I have to add more people in there though. Could be a good place to put those drunken charsets I've been meaning to use.

And a battle screen. I got the Monk girl equipped with the Song command so she could Buff up the party.

@ Ocean: Is this going to be a game that gives off a sort of old school Final Fantasy feel to it while retaining its personal storyline/characters, if so I'll make sure to look forward to a demo release.

There was a demo release, but that was a while ago and looks more NES style than this does. Yeah, the characters and story are original, so you won't have Cloud + Terra + Tidus going to defeat the revived Kefka or anything.
