As long as the main character doesn't have red hair and come from one of Nippon Ichi's games it can still be original.

For those of you saying that that Star ocean 4 is crap, wait till it comes out and gets in the top 10 Xbox 360 rpgs. Who'll be laughing then.
Getting in the 360 top rpgs isnt that massive an achievment, it doesnt get many rpgs.

I will, at you for giving a shit if it's in the Top Ten! It's cool to be a fan an all but don't try talking up a game that will most likely be average.

It won't be that difficult. The 360 only has about 10 RPGs.

I used to be quite a fan of the series back in the early years when Star Ocean 2 & 3 were around, hell I even made a fansite and game off it way back then...but in the last 2 years of so, I've seen myself distant away from this series, maybe it's the fact that Tales & Star Ocean are pretty much the same, or that these guys take YEARS to make the next one...anywhooo...I was pleased with the first remake but a bit disapointed on the second one, I mean...it's pretty much the same whole game where as the first departure was a whole new experience! Shame on you! As Sophia would say.  :fogetlaugh:

As for SO4, I managed to luck out and my brother got a XBox 360, so there is no doubt I'm buying it...however that will most likely be the final one I'll buy regardless on how well it will do...I like what they are doing so I'll give them the benefit.

Dude what? Why does it even matter if it makes it to top 10? Selling a lot of copies doesn't automatically mean it's a good game. And... laughing? Do you seriously think we even care? I want it to be good, I'm just saying no one here is optimistic for good reasons.

so4 is gonna be complete garbage btw.  these people are not capable of making good games anymore (honestly, i do not think they ever were.  all star ocean games seem pretty formulaic and unexceptional to me and i don't know why any game in the series has gotten the amount of attention people give them.  i always thought they played like generic rpgs and that the battle systems were kind of brainless; idk why people look back at them so fondly!), and i think everyone knows this.  i'm serious, there is no doubt in my mind that this game will range from unexceptional to flat out bad.  it is like being optimistic about an anne rice novel.

I've recently gone back to play the original SO2, and while it's not as great as I thought it was, it's still fun once the story picks up. The cast (seemed) different from the norm, and aside from Claude, Rena and Diaz (the most boring character), they pretty much are.

I wanted to like SO3 so bad, I really did, but I couldn't get into at all. The game was just painfully boring, and it totally turned me off from buying another SO game ever. It's similar to how I feel about FF12, but way worse.

At least the Star Ocean games are a step above the Tales games: story, graphics, setting. I'm not sure if the battle system is deeper though, since I've never played SO3.

The battles in the SO4 trailers look awesome but WTF is up with their facial expressions? They look creepy... *shivers*

I'LL SHOW YOU........WHEN THIS GAME I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH COMES OUT AND DOMINATES A MINISCULE PORTION OF THIS ONE SYSTEM'S LIBRARY!!!!!

WHO. WILL. BE. LAUGHING. THEN?????

Each Star Ocean is about as original as a Goosebumps novel, this one will be a generic jRPG with a button mash-y real time battle system that people swoon over for no apparently reason other than the fact it makes grinding for levels slightly faster than clicking through menus in a turn based system. If that's precisely what you're looking for, I'll give that it will probably be pretty polished.

I personally actually downright hate Star Ocean, because they lie to me. I try to get into them thinking it'll be a entertaining RPG romp through space, which I LOVE as a setting for ANY game. Setting a game in spaceships and featuring planetary exploration is enough to get me to buy anything. But Star ocean fucking LIES, and an hour in, you're plunked on some podunk planet in some faggy jRPG with elves. SPACE ELVES. Oh that's right, it's GENERIC CHARACTER DESIGN #1001, a lolita with pointy ears. Maybe she will have a puffy rabbit-like thing as a sidekick? Maybe it could make a super cute noise: "Pwaaaaaii~~!" How old is our hero? Between 18 and 20 you say? He has a girlfriend or sister who is a year younger than him??? What's that???? There's a 42 year old party member who everyone refers to as "old man"????????? Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of all the RPGs I have played, I enjoy SO2's battles the most by far. Yes, it's button-mashy, but the battles are really fast paced and are over before they start to get boring. Why SO3 had to ruin it by adding in "MP death" is beyond me...

ya that is another thing about star ocean.  i typed up an 8 paragraph post about this years ago but theyre so goddamn misleading.  the name, the box art, and everything else about it exudes SCI FI RPG which is at least slightly different from most fantasy ones, but it's a complete copout because, like rowain said, you get a SPACE INTRO and then you're thrown on some conveniently backwater planet and have to plod through some fantasy setting for the rest of the game.  the hilarious part is they KEEP doing it.  this exact thing has happened in ALL THREE GAMES and it will probably happen in the fourth.  it is part of what i meant by formulaic.

Everyone knows that in battle systems similar to Star Ocean, every magic user except one is worthless. So this was their way of dealing with the problem since stronger physical characters have less MP. In a way it works, but there is still the main set of characters who are always better than the other party members in the game. You almost start the game off with the best characters, so it's almost pointless to use anybody else if you have to. Plus battles end in less than 10 seconds, so there is no endurance involved in the game unless you get into the optional battles.

Also man SO1 is like THE WORST when it comes to lying to you. You don't go into space AT ALL except for one scene in the beginning, and there is one space factory dungeon at the end of the game. Even Chrono Trigger has more futuristic elements than that game. I don't get it.

I don't know what the guys were doing when they left Namco to make tri-ace after Tales of Phantasia. They had a great idea to make a sci-fi JRPG since it was a pretty fresh idea at that time. It feels like they had the first hour of their true game come out, but ran out of ideas and went back to their "Tales of" formula.

I remember reading something saying that Tri-Ace included medieval elements to make the game appeal more to the rpg crowd.

The fact that most of the story takes place in a backwater planet would actually be pretty good to use in just one installment, definitely not the first. Kind of like the way FFVII changed settings. I mean the plot of the first game was alright (better than Tales of Phantasia), something similar to a Star Trek episode. Unfortunately most of the game was "let's go around the globe to find our friends" and "collect the four sacred emblems". Only at the end did the game began getting more interesting.

By the way, from what I heard SO4 is going to be a lot more sci-fi, in that you can actually control a ship in this one and travel to different planets.

Has anyone else noticed how the Star ocean series keeps getting more and more sci-fi as it goes along, the first was the most fantasy based and the third was the most science fiction.

@Rowain: ok, so the story might not be completely original but atleast the characters in Star ocean are unique and interesting, like which other game has a man that has two dragons living on his back (Ashton, Star ocean 2) or a little midget mole that holds a battle axe which is almost bigger than himself (Roger, Star ocean 3)

star ocean 3 literally had one character for every anime stereotype. star ocean 2 had quite a bit of this as well.

Actually I bought it because of that ( I never playes star ocean 1 and 2) and I was just kind ripped off when I noticed I was in a medieval setting all over again...

I like the Star Ocean 1 remake as a pretty standard action-RPG.  I also like Star Ocean 2, but this is really just a port.

You guys are right though.  It is stupid that Star Ocean is not about . . . the stars.  It's just a straightforward fantasy j-RPG.  The Mysterious Member of an Ancient Race trope is swapped with Mysterious Member of an Advanced Civilization.  That is okay, I guess, but it's baffling why the developers refuse embrace the novel concept of a Sci-Fi j-RPG.

I wonder if sales numbers are pretty good in Japan?  Maybe it's a winning formula.

From rading about SO4 is that it is apparently going to allow you to travel on a ship. So now it has the stars in it, it's name makes sense.

Personally I've only played 1 and 3, 1's alright, and 3 is alright, MP death doesn't bother me, it makes sense slightly. Your using your mental power to activate these things, and since we need both physical strength and mental strength to live, and if you have no mental strenght, your braindead, which is as good as dead. Makes sense from a logical view, but I can see the problems with it slightly in a gaming view, esp for the magic lovers.

Plus I never had a problem, as I rarely found a use for Symbology, I can smash things to Death with Fayt and Cliff just fine, symbology only is needed to heal them.
