The Playstation Final Fantasy games were the worst in my opinion. Mainly because of how slow their battle systems are. In the SNES era, the ATB system worked flawlessly because of how quick it was. But then Square thought it would be great to pan the battle backgrounds for 20 seconds before the battles started for some stupid reason (FF 9 is the worst with this). They also had 2 minute long summons for god knows why. I seriously hated fighting most of the time, especially when they had random encounters. I guess it was still fun fighting when you knew where to go, but it got annoying after being stuck in a dungeon and not knowing what to do and have random slow battles pop up just to slow you down even more.
Final Fantasy 10 was great to me, because the battle system was the best of all the Final Fantasy games. FF 12 was decent, but lacked on the story and characters. I'm looking forward to this one, since I've never really been disappointed with an FF game. They obviously are trying to make it very similar to FF7, so we'll see how that turns out. If the game is fun to play and has good pacing with a tolerable story, I don't really care. Final Fantasy games never have incredible stories, so I never look forward to that.
