final fantasy is a good series because the girly men are just part of japanese CULTURE  :welp:
No they aren't, they want to be girly but they are not necessarily girly.

Battle system this, battle system that, battle system battle system, I really hate the whole word and when it comes to final fantasy, there's never been a GOOD (read: fun) battle system, nor has there been a complex one. It's always the same: You sit through a 30 second transition, mash a button until the enemies are dead and then have a 10 second transition during which you get gold, items, exp and shit like that which you dont even need if you are playing any of the psx ones because the games are so easy.

In FF10 the battles were more fun IN THEORY because it worked a lot faster IN THEORY but in practice you had to swap through your entire party in every battle to keep them from being underleveled.

I recently played through discs 1 and 2 of FF7 and it is tedious as all hell to play it without a turbo button. I seriously couldn't have sat through the CLOUD TELLS HIS DARK PAST THIS IS SO INTERESTING scene without turbo and even then it took like an hour to get through that shit. Battles are another thing that need turbo because even with it, it takes like 15 seconds to deal with some generic slime enemies.

Man, you feel that way and still were able to play through both disc 1 and disc 2 on FF7? I'm impressed. I've tried playing FF7 on at least three seperate occasions, and yet I could never get myself to go past disc 1. Each time I re-play it, I forget why I ever stopped playing in the first place. But then my enthusaism would wane after Midgar and burn out while trekking somewhere on that damned world map (I only get that far to level up/customize materia, but even that gets old after a while).

Is that spoiler that's supposed to happen on disc 2 or something even worth it? Because every time I quit playing I do so without regret, but apparently I'm missing out on some mind-blowingly tragic event that changes your life forever.

Well Disc 2 is really short, like, 3 hours with turbo constantly on, and Disc 1 is pretty good up until you leave Midgar at which point the game starts to fall apart but the constant barrage of minigames and leveling up materia and trying to get all the enemy skill stuff keeps it just interesting enough to get through it all.

whoa why is ff7's story shit.

it's better than almost every other story out there and I'd seriously be interested in seeing one of you justify it beyond "characters are cliche" or whatever since I think too many people get away with that where it doesn't apply (ah yes the cliche of the sullen anime guy with a big sword that this fucking game invented).

Everyone has been commenting on having a turbo button. You certainly can't turbo button when you have to pay attention for a timed attack everytime Squall swings his gunblade. I'll avoid using the english language liberally when making a point.

i wouldn't say it's bad, but i never thought it to be anything special. the whole deal with Shinra was kind of interesting, and the idea of being part of a "terrorist" mob thing was neat to, but thats about all I can say as I never made it past the second disc...

Ehrgeiz is utter shit, Dissidia may be pretty crappy but nowhere near the level of Ehrgeiz.

yeah but i didn't care about the characters, and part of it was that, for example, cloud was the sullen anime guy, but even if it's not cliche due to when this game came out, that doesn't make it likeable.  the characters weren't cliche, just boring, for me at least.

i did like the beginning of the story, and bits and pieces through the middle, but as it went on i just lost interest in it.  even still though the story IS the only reason to play that game, so if you don't like it, you won't get anything out of it.  the whole argument of BUT THE BATTLE SYSTEM!!! is just terrible, i'm not playing 3 discs worth of battle system (which also is just like any other RPG except it makes you sit and wait your turn, why is this so great?)

Writing as someone who formerly hated Final Fantasy VII, I actually find the game's story rather fascinating; not in the sense that it's masterfully told, but in its simplistic profundity; as paradoxical as that may sound.

When I last played-through the game, back in November, a few years after having first completed it (with a great deal of resistance and effort), I came to observe more about how the aesthetic informs the underlying theme of the story. The theme I write of being postcolonial industrialism's repression of our inherent humanity.

Both Wutai and Cosmo Canyon are representative of Eastern and Western pre-colonial civilisations, respectively. The former society engaged in a full-on war with the Shinra, whereas the latter produced Avalanche who, in contrast, committed several covert and systematic attacks on the aforementioned conglomerate in attempt to bring the Mako-refinement industry to its knees.

What are Shinra's aims? Cid Highwind tells the group that its Space Program was scrapped because the newly-discovered Mako reserves appeared to be more profitable. Also remember that before this discovery Shinra had invested the majority of its labour in the coal-mining industry, of which Corel was a major centre.

The societies of Wutai and Cosmo Canyon live in humble harmony with the planet, with not a care in the world; whereas the Shinra, a fusion of both Eastern and Western post-industrial societies, seeks to bleed the planet without considering the potential consequences of its actions. And for what? Profit that will only buy them short-term gratification.

It's a simple, profound and pertinent commentary on the conflict between what we want (and strive to acquire, regardless of the consequences) and what we truly need. The Dark Knight's a good example of a similarly well-paced story crafted around a central over-arching theme (or synthesis of themes).

I could write more on the depths of the game's subtext, but I'm spent for now. Point: there's often more than meets the eye.

Yeah man, the color coding makes your post impossible to read do you realize this?

When I try to look at it my eyes just focus on the red words and I can't read the rest of them.

what are you talming about it's FINAL FANTASY
the title alone is enough to hype about
let alone the idea of playing TIDUS X SQUALL
its likeawet dream
I understand that most people will hype but me, I just don't. I honestly don't care for this game, but it does not seem bad. Will probably not buy it.

I gotta agree with you here Liquid Ocelot. The Octave Doctor is pretty annoying with his constant FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY TRANSFORMERS TRANSFORMERS TRANSFORMERS ANIME ANIME ANIME bullshit. Glad to know there's another sane person on these boards Liquid Ocelot.
