pretty sure your parents are fuckin and that is why the door is locked.

really who locks their door at home unless they are jackin it or something similar.
They lock their door when they aren't home (work); it is unlocked when they are.

I was always under the impression that it was natural to unlock your door, step inside, and then lock it behind you. It's a simple security measure that takes no time.

the only door i don't do this too is my dorm door, because i'm more obsessed with checking to make sure it's UNLOCKED when i leave for a few minutes, i hate locking myself out and i don't want to carry keys to walk two steps to the bathroom so i just double check it to see if it's locked or not every time i leave
See, this is weird, because we have a bathroom/sink in our room's hallway. There is no excuse besides that they don't want to carry their keeps with them to class. I wouldn't mind if one of them were in here, but whatevs. It's their stuff.

our dorms are individual rooms with shared bathrooms on either side of the hall, luckily my room is right next to the bathroom, that's why it's only a few steps

but i keep it locked pretty much always except when i'm only going to be gone for a short time, usually if i'm taking a shower or using the bathroom, i don't see the point in carrying keys and unlocking doors for that

i live in the middle of nowhere and the first thing i do when i get home is lock and deadbolt my door. i don't trust my neighbors at all, like half of them are meth-heads, and half of them are like crazy mexican farmers with chickens running around in the street who's kids are normally seen climbing on top of their roofs and jumping off or from one roof to another.

i double check my car door when i step out than go up to my door, unlock it (which is kindof a pain because i have a separate key for the deadbolt and doorknob), and then go inside, deadbolt, test the deadbolt, and then lock the handle. then i go to my room and conk out on the bed.

one time i forgot to lock the door and i went to bed and when i woke up i realized i didn't lock it and it was the worst feeling even though nobody broke in.

I don't see why you'd NOT lock your door. I never lived in the "ghettos", but last time I lived in an actual house we kept the door locked anyway, because we did have home intrusion (no invasion or robbery, for some reason, but people came in while we were absent twice. We did get robbed, but it was unrelated to doors in any way)

And even before that, I lived in pretty country-sidey cities a tad higher in the north, and we still locked the doors, at least most of the time, because we DID get robbed. I don't know if you want to call that shit luck, but you can get robbed from practically anywhere.

Just keep your keys with you all the time, how hard is that?

yeah ok. we're not talking about robberies while you were away. thats totally unrelated. If you are H.O.M.E. did u lock your doors? in the 'country-sidey cities?' Theres no need to. Most robberies don't occur while people are home. thats just bad thuganomics. i mean come on.

Why didn't you assault him?  Some people wait their whole lives to justifiably protect their homestead like that (usually NRA folk).  What did you do, just step aside so he could scurry away?

keep posting...

We've had some robberies before and some attempted robberies, so even if we're all home we'd still leave the doors closed if we aren't in that particular room.
Heck, there was a time that my mom went outside for a minute to get something in her car and left the door unlocked (but closed). A guy just went in and started grabbing stuff, and when she came in he just dropped it and ran. We were all asleep when it happened until she screamed for my dad, but by that time the guy had been long gone. And people in general are just getting crazier nowadays. I even heard of a case where someone broke into a guys house, and the guy didn't even resist, but they smashed his fucking skull and stole stuff. Luckily the guy survived, but man..what the fuck. After hearing that, I could never really trust leaving my door open.

There's also been cases where my brother would be downstairs and he'd see someone outside trying to grab our clothes. And I remember my grandfather actually saw someone grab a stick and POKE IT THROUGH OUR WINDOW to attempt to get a shirt off a hangar. Imagine if the door was open then? Seriously, I hate thieves.

:nyd: i disagree. there definitely are places where you do. but im saying where climbtree lives i dont think s/he should have to lock the doors in the middle of the day, while s/hes there.  the area where i live is even more urban(albeit not much)than climbtree's place in new fucking zeland where the crime rate is much lower to boot. its just a chance robbery. thieves dont rob places in the middle of the day when people are home in those areas.

i've also lived in the fucking hood in albany, and the house across the street  from me got robbed, a kid who was just at my house went missing after a party at my place,(i moved away so i dont know what happened to him) my friend was shot and killed a few blocks away, and there was a crackhouse on the corner.  Don't misunderstand me. my door was locked every minute of every day there. i had a security system, the fucking works.  but thats completely different to the situation we're talking about.

People who live in the country (Canada) leave their doors open, and people stop by by literally just walking right in and saying hello. No knocks, nothing, just going right in like they own the place.

But I keep my doors locked, but I have dogs that scare people so it's not that big of a problem.
A tool is a tool regardless. I mean if you suck, you suck, and not even the most perfect tool could save you. And if your damn good then even with the worst tool ever conceived you could chug out some high quality shit.

That is true. I live in Canada in a rural area and we never lock the door. I would lock it when I go away for the day, but I don't even have a key. We haven't ever been robbed, either. I think its like this in my neighborhood because anyone who would want to steal something would have no idea how to get out here.

yeah i wish i lived in this magical land where i could leave my doors and windows unlocked and expect people to return you lost wallet without a few bucks missing (iceland is actually this magical land icelandic people don't have a single evil bone in their body).

i live in a pretty safe neighborhood (biggest thing to happen in 2 years was a string of car vandals) but everyone and i mean everyone has guns so unless the thief is armed like spetsnaz they ain't getting shit.

Why must Canada be so whymsical? Before I had a roommate I'd never lock my doors, and on several occasions I've LEFT WORK and chased people down to give them their wallet back.

you're actually expected to do this if you work in any sort of customer service at all btw. also just because most people are good doesn't mean that there aren't bad people and while paranoia is dumb it doesn't take anything to lock your door.
