I wouldn't go so far to say that the AI is retarded, but it is pretty bad sometimes. I find the old RE games to have worse AI, at least the AI in RE4 and 5 do more things than slowly walk twords you to eat your brain out. They hit you with their weapons, they throw their weapons, and like the zombies from Resident Evil's 1 through 3, they grab you. What makes them bad for me though is that even though it is somewhat convenient, is this: you see an enemy running at you and then when he gets within 20 meters of you, he goes from running to slowly walking. Yeah I know this is because you cannot move and shoot but you know what, by now you SHOULD be able to move and shoot.

This is what I'm talking about.  Because the game controls like an SUV without power steering, they had to alter the gameplay to keep it from being too difficult because you're fighting the controller more than the enemies.  The whole idea of the badguys charging at you then slowly stalking in (despite the fact that you're armed with machine guns and rifles) is ridiculous.  They don't even throw their weapons unless you quick-turn to run away or three other guys are blocking their path.  The more dangerous enemies like the chainsaw dude and executioner have this ridiculously long wind up and the only way you can possibly be hit by them is if you find yourself caught in a corner (except for Sheeva who will just stand there politely waiting for you to move even though a guy with a blade is about to strike her).  Speaking of path, they all move on this follow-the-leader pathfinding.  You can just run in circles and instead of breaking off the path to cut you off they'll just tail you.  It's like everything moves on a linear track where deviating from the straight line is impossible.

The developer mentioned that they're rebooting Resident Evil after this installment.  If they decide to keep the series as an action game then I pray they hire someone who knows what they're doing.

I remember thinking when I heard they were porting re4 to the wii that it was cool because there's enough different input methods there to comfortably support moving and shooting at the same time but they didn't even do it.

Not sure why people complain about the controls, because the game is insanely fun the way it is!

Exactly, and to think they are adding a competitive multiplayer! How the fuck will that work with the "shoot without moving" mechanic? Capcom should at the very least add strafing to that mode, because it will be extremely boring if they don't.

I am not necessarily saying the game is "bad", but the controls are aging fast. I believe the worst offender is the fact that you cannot move and shoot, which you should be able to do by now. Capcom should take a very good look at Dead Space's aiming, because this is getting ridiculous.

Well they have finally added strafing but it's too slow and you can't strafe and aim at the same time...

I know and that is what I am talking about, you should at least be able to strafe and shoot.

God I hate these controls. I thought I'd get used to them in a while, but now it's pretty clear it's not going to happen. Why can't I shoot as I walk? In RE4 it was at least bearable, but recently I've been spoiled by action games with way better controls. Is the pistol so goddamn heavy he can't even move while using it? Having a partner is a pain in the ass, I really don't feel like looking after her. She's stupid as hell.

Also RE4 threw much less enemies at you. When I played the demo a month ago, I was constantly getting overwhelmed in the public assembly mission because enemies would respawn like every two fucking seconds. Then Capcom thought it would be hilarious if they tossed a giant axe man into the fray too, just to make it more tedious than it already is.

After I played Dead Space I can't play RE4/5 without being more pissed then I am scared. The thing that really kills it for me is the knife, the most useless piece of crap ever, they have a larger radius for crying out loud! And when they do hit you they back up out of your radius, the exception being the chainsaw maniacs whom on the otherhand still lunge forward with a larger radius then you. Cornering them and knocking them over while the climb over/through/around obstacles is the only thing it's useful for.
A tool is a tool regardless. I mean if you suck, you suck, and not even the most perfect tool could save you. And if your damn good then even with the worst tool ever conceived you could chug out some high quality shit.

Played the demo for this and found myself completely turned off by it.  It is STILL plagued by the same old gameplay issues and I also fundamentally disagree with the direction that the plot has taken since RE3.  RE2 was terrifying because genetic mutation was seemingly RANDOM and the majority of the creatures you encountered were unpredictable and strange.  They were mindless, shambling beasts that killed without prejudice and did not possess anything more than base instincts.  Since RE3 and into 4 and 5 you find yourself fighting creatures that are more sentient, which completely robs the experience of the impending sense of chaos that was the prize of the earliest incarnations of the game.

I don't know about you guys, but RE and RE2 appealed to me because they were ZOMBIE GAMES.  Aside from the fact that these new guys sometimes sprout tentacles out of their devastated neckstumps they aren't really that intimidating.  The communicate, they move en masse, they can use basic tools - on the whole they feel less like cannibalistic savages and more like angry suburbanites (except they're BLACK haha).  This stupid shift from atmospheric survival horror to GENERIC ACTION GAME WITH SHIT CONTROLS really pisses me off and I don't really feel anything but resentment for this series nowadays.
For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.

RE3 had zombies too and they bought back Hunters, but oddly took the Lickers out. Yeah I do agree that the story twist was an odd choice though.

Wut? The enemy AIs near the beginning of the game were laughably bad.  They would run up to you, turn around then walk away, then turn  back around and slowly walk to you, maybe making an attempt at attacking you every now and then.
Enemy AI later on isn't much better.
The only decent AI I have seen in the game is from the guys with guns, even then it's not that good. They tend to throw Flash Grenades, a lot, especially when you are taking cover, and they are fairly accurate. It is a good tactic... Except they do absolutely nothing while you are stood their totally defenseless for a few seconds. Kind of makes you wonder why they even threw the grenade in the first place.

played this last night in a real cinema that my friend operates, with said friend. i was first deterred by the game's splitscreen (who am i kidding i just really hate split-screen) and couldn't imagine playing the game with the ammo-suckin' ai. but after playing it on a screen that erases the "splitscreen-effect" of not seeing enough, and eliminating the friendly ai simultaneously, this game turned out awesome good!

and the sound was greta in full surround. speaking of sound, having these cinema chairs with people screaming and giving tips and whatnot in anticipation really turned the mood up a notch!

Really?  Because I played RE4 on a home theatre with surround sound and a huge screen and I never wanted to play a zombie game again in my life.

Me and a friend stayed up all night and beat the game on Veteran in one go.

Pretty awesome game. Not without it's flaws, a lot of them, but I had a blast.

Also, the first half of the game and the second half of the game are completely different games. Seriously. I couldn't even tell I was still playing the same game. Still had a good time though.
