Most of the reviews I have been reading and listening too on the radio at work seem pretty positive so far. Most people saying it is a reimagining of the series not unlike the new Batman series, so at least there is good news there...  Yep I will definately be seeing this next week since I can't this weekend :(

Also Chris, I am curious about how the acting is. I mean as much as I love Simon Pegg I just cannot see hime doing a good job playing scottie. And Harold from harold and kumar seems kind of out of place too...

Rotten Tomatos, 27/27 reviews so far. I haven't heard any bad reviews whatsoever besides a few complaints about character devleopment or w/e.

EDIT:
Just went up to 32/32!

where do you live that you got to see an advance showing

Would you believe it's part of a MySpace promotion in Australia! Fuckin' Australia.

Yeah Simon Pegg wasn't actually too bad. A bit sorta........ I dunno, eccentric? Definitely a lot of comedy focus, but he wasn't too bad, and you don't get to see a lot of him anyway. Harold really impressed me! I was thinking he would be terribly out of place but he totally held his own. Very impressed in his comedy and dramatic scenes, and he even gets to kick some ass in an action sequence fairly early on. There's another "main" character that's not really advertised (Chekhov? I'm not familiar with Star Trek AT ALL) that is also p. good, if not really overexaggerated. The cast is pretty strong all around; if anything, Quinto as Spock is a bit flat, though this could be to his character or maybe that I just have a bias toward the guy anyway. Oh actually Eric Bana as Nero was pretty terrible. I dunno, his acting was alright (tho pretty sketchy in places), but the dialogue was woeful. Jesus.

The movie was pretty much big dumb space-fun with a Star Trek label on it.

Spock is Vulcan and Vulcans believe in logic over emotion, they are supposed to be pretty cold and "flat" as a species. Leonard Nimoy brought a weird sort of charm with him as Spock (though Spock is half human), but it's hard to say if the new dude playing Spock FAILS at it... or gets it dead right, given the circumstances. I also haven't seen the movie yet.

Holy shit I just looked up who is playing Chekhov in this because I realized you're right and I haven't seen him in any trailers or ads and it's THIS GUY: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton_Yelchin for one he's three years YOUNGER than me and it's the dude from that fucking Justin Timberlake movie about the drug dealer. What a weird choice. I know this is YOUNG KIRK and stuff but this guy is like 19 isn't he? He's also got a bit of a babbyface going. How weird!

Oh he really is Russian. Like Steel said though, Chekhov is sort of a outdated character, created very PROGRESSIVELY considering he was Russian and created in the midst of the Cold War but it doesn't mean nearly as much today.

"So who're you?"
"CHIKHOEV, SIR"
"And how old are you Chekhov?"
"SIVINTEEN"

His accent is really very majorly overplayed.

Definitely looks like they're trying to make Star Trek all cool now.  And Budweiser?  What the fuck?  I'm interested in how they incorporate Nokia into this as well.

I never watched many episodes of Star Trek, but I just found like every original episode on Hulu (links to CBS).  http://www.hulu.com/videos/search?query=star+trek  This will be something to check out.

The product placement really upsets me.  I'm a casual fan of TNG and Voyager, never really watched tos, but one of the bigger points of the series was that there is money, corporations, etc..etc... in the future.  But product placement in any movie bothers me, so I guess I'm biased.

Oddly enough, the reason why I'm going to this movie opening weekend is to take my father-in-law.  So I hope the whole THIS IS NOT YOUR FATHER'S STAR TREK is wrong.

I just saw it.

Jesus dude, I don't get how anyone could dislike this movie or think it's boring. I liked it a lot.

Not enough Sulu though. To be honest I was a bit disappointed with John Cho, his stature just didn't match George Takei's...

Yeah, I agree with Psy, I really liked it! I thought most of the cast was well chosen the story was a little muddy but still interesting. They could've thrown in a couple more of the old catchphrases just for appeasement but overall I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I really want to see this but I have a question:

Does the Nimoy cameo fit? It seems really cheap to have the old spock show up because of time travel or whatever.

Nimoy's appearance didn't really bother me. I mean I don't know. The whole plot would be entirely different if his part didn't exist, he doesn't just show up, go "live long and prosper!" then fade away into mysterious, if that is what you're asking. He's got an actual role.
