I couldn't help but think of the following video when I read this topic:

The guy playing George Lucas has me cracking up every time I watch this.

So wait you thought Shaun of the Dead was fine but Reefer Madness was too extreme?

I don't mean extreme in terms of the gore itself being exaggerated, but rather just the overuse of it. I mean, obviously, like in Shaun of the Dead, it was all very campy and clearly not meant to be realistic, but toward the end, it just seemed like they were featuring bloodshed just for the sheer sake of it, rather than as a plot point (besides the obvious zombie-killing in Shaun of the Dead, I can only recall one gruesome scene featuring a human character). But hey, this is a completely personal opinion, I'm speaking just for myself.  :woop:

Alan Cumming was excellent too in his portrayal of Stephen Colbert The Lecturer

BAHAHA. I never even noticed the resemblance, but christ, you're so right.

And the thing is, I wasn't attempting to make the film sound good, because to be honest, some of it was a bit too extreme for me. I'm not a major fan of bloodshed for the sake of camp (unless it's done very well, such as in, say, Shaun of the Dead), and I found this one to be a little over-the-top in that respect. Also, some scenes just felt off to me, such as the whole "Little Mary Sunshine"/dominatrix bit. But, as I said, other scenes were downright fantastic; "The Stuff" is an incredible song (I'm working on my own recording of it at the moment, god, is it fun to sing), and "Romeo and Juliet" had me cracking up to no end. Kristin Bell is outstanding in her role, as is Christian Campbell (Neve Campbell's brother; she also makes a few appearances in the film).

But to be fair, it can't be compared to Rocky Horror; consider the thirty year gap in between. I'm sure if Rocky H. had been filmed today, it would have been a hell of a lot better as far as production values go.

But no, this wasn't a LOL HEH RANDOM post as much as trying to seek out other musical lovers in the community, or other opinions on the film.

Has anyone seen the stage musical, or heard the soundtrack? I've been trying to seek it out.

My boyfriend sat me down and showed me the most bizarre movie musical I've ever seen (and this is coming from a Rocky Horror fan), Reefer Madness. I can't believe I hadn't heard of it, since I tend to be a huge fan of Broadway (and, well, off-Broadway, and anything else involving song and dance numbers), and also, because I'm a pot smoker.

It's basically a remake of a film made in the 30s (or possibly the 40s?), Tell Your Children, an anti-drug film centering around the evil of reefer dens, and how marijuana can turn people into total lunatics. (Yeah. Right.)

However, the remake is done entirely in a tongue in cheek fashion clearly meant to make fun of the seriousness of Tell Your Children, and while some of it was just too camp and bizarre even for me, there are some truly priceless moments. Such as this one...

To set the scene:
Jimmy, the main character, who has descended into the EVILS of pot smoking, decides to go rob the church collection box so he can have more money to spend on weed. However, when he grabs the box, he begins to have a hallucination...:

Coincidentally, my avatar is one of the characters from Apollo Justice.  Also, some of the trials in the PW games might be tough, but they're not impossible.

yeah, i was going to say, i love your av. ema was adorable in apollo justice.

Also I seem to recall a topic or at least mention of the game here on GW before, but I can't really if anything ever came of it, such as GW members actively playing it or what.

yeah, i ran a search before i posted, but i couldn't find anything (other than a mention in passing), so i was hoping somebody would come out of the woodwork.

i would have suggested he go straight for phoenix wright as well, except that he mentioned that he's somewhat new to the genre, so i thought some of the trials might be a little bit difficult. however, yes, completely agreed, the ace attorney series surpasses all the games i mentioned by far.

i beta tested this game years and years ago, but as of last year, have rediscovered it and have found it to be more immersing than ever. it's the first MMO in a long time that has captured me (since star wars galaxies-- before the new features and expansion packs turned me off to it). there's just something about the quaint, playmobile-esque little characters combined with the really in-depth economical aspects and the addictive puzzles which keep me coming back to it.

does anyone here play it? my character's kayleigh, on the viridian ocean. i'd love to go out pillaging with a GW member or two.  :woop:

Much better post!

Would this game be a good recommendation for someone who has never played a detective game before? I could, I don't know, try this and then move on to the "bigger and better" ones like Phoenix Wright or something.

hmmm. that's a good question, actually. i would perhaps recommend hotel dusk instead. jake hunter just didn't have enough content to leave you interested in the detective game genre; it left you feeling empty, while hotel dusk was satisfying and memorable, while still not being a difficult game. the reason it took me as long as it did was because of the development of the plot, the twists and turns, and the investigation you had to do due to this. i don't remember having any difficulties with the level of the puzzles, but maybe that's because i'm an experienced adventure gamer.

in fact, if i had to recommend a game as an entry into the world of detective games, it would actually be the famicom detective club, part II, for the SNES. at this point, it's abandonware, so you can legally find it here, in english: http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=5053

HOW badly did THAT game suck?

-- edit, since, yes, this was truly a lousy post originally. --

i picked it up hoping for something similar to hotel dusk: room 215, which i played last summer and absolutely adored. hotel dusk featured innovative puzzles, an interesting storyline, killer graphics and diverse characters; it kept me hooked for a good ten to twelve hours or so. i wouldn't say it has too much replay value, but i certainly have fond memories of it.

i had hopes that jake hunter would be a similar hard-boiled noir detective romp. it's divided into three cases, so i began the first one. however, while the first five minutes showed promise that it would be an intelligent adventure game, with subjects to interrogate, clues to unravel, logic-bases puzzles to solve... i found that i'd already beaten the first case in under an hour. wait, what? i'd barely even become engaged in the storyline. there was hardly any sleuthing to be done, jake hunter would occasionally ask you to review the aspects of the case in an easy multiple choice question review, but aside from that, the game held your hand, not letting you even leave a room until you were "done" (which in some cases, simply involved repeating a question to one of the characters), all but telling you which inventory item to use in whichever instance, and... just... grah. so i thought, okay, maybe it's just the first case that's like this, maybe it's an introduction, or a tutorial. but no, the next two chapters proved to be equally irritating. the first obvious suspect would generally prove to be the actual perp, there was little to no character development for anyone, let alone jake hunter, who would randomly tell us, for instance, that he had connections to japanese gangs... with no background or reason for us to understand it.

agh. i'm going to stop now, because the reason for this post WAS just wanting to hear from others if they had a better gaming experience with it than i did. but yes, sorry for the original abruptness of the post, guys. :)

Please, please post topics in the comics&anime forum about what you're up to.

oh, and i certainly will post, once i have something worth showing! at the moment, i'm just taking a comic scripting summer course, but i'll dig around for my old pieces from my materials and techniques and drawing for sequential classes. but yeah, i'm always drawing, so i'll be posting. :)

hell, i'll be honest, despite what everyone's saying here, it's the most innovative RPG (in the true sense of the word) that i've played in a long time. yeah, it has its stereotypes, a gimmicky art style, an annoying soundtrack... but regardless, the concept in and of itself was fresh, and the game never took itself particularly seriously.

however, it has nothing on the phoenix wright series.

you know what DID suck hardcore, though? that freaking jake hunter game. THAT game made me want to throw my DS at a wall.

cheers to you all for being so welcoming, i always feel like a bit of an intruder when i join a new community, but hell, i love talking video games and design too much to hide any longer. though there's actually a video game design major at my college, it's really really dry, which is why i went into comics instead; i can program to a point, but i'm too scatter-brained to sit through the endless courses teaching me how to do so. i'm more of a "run around shrieking with a sketchbook in hand until i fall over" kind of girl.

as for music, i have an immense fondness for british artists from the 60s and 70s. i love the who, the kinks, the small faces, the buzzcocks, the sex pistols, siouxsie and the banshees, the pogues... oh, then of course, the talking heads-- david byrne is a genius. so is jarvis cocker, formerly of pulp... ooh, and the dismemberment plan! i could ramble on and on, but i'm sure you get the drift.  :woop:

i'm psyched to be here!

hey, internet nation. i already made my first few posts elsewhere, but, well, hi! i'm laney, i'm twenty-two, studying sequential art (AKA comics) over at the savannah college of art and design. i originally hail from the UK, however.

i've been into game development for long enough to remember actually BELIEVING that "a blurred line" would come out in winter of 2003. however, it's always been just a hobby, i have yet to create anything i'm proud of.

i have the occasional tendency to get pretentious, especially when it comes to music, but just slap me around the head and i'll shut up.

wow, it's nice to finally de-lurk.

ooh! ooh! a thread for smokers!
NOBODY i know smokes anymore, but i'm still on a pack and a half a day. go figure.

camel lights for me. i'm not particularly exciting. but really, i'll smoke anything but frickin' basics. during my freshman year of college, when i was broke and living on ramen noodles, i bought those for a while. they did a number on my throat and gave me the worst smoker's cough of my life.

okay, so i'm a total lurker as far as the game making community goes, but once i saw this post, i had to throw in my two cents.

alcohol = bad. (for me, anyway.)
i used to be completely addicted to it, to the point where i actually checked myself into rehab, and haven't touched it for almost two years now. absolutely one of the best decisions i've made in my life.

however... i still love my recreational drugs. i've tried a few different things here and there, but my favorite has got to be good old DXM. the only people i know who get nauseous are the ones who've only tried the cough syrup, and usually that's had other active ingredients which were probably the cause. my solution is the gel-caps. in any case, DXM: you don't have to go through a dealer, it's ludicrously cheap, and it'll keep you occupied for a good eight hours.

it's all about being responsible; you're using drugs as recreation, so try and limit your drug use to the amount of time you'd spend, say, on a video game.

...well, maybe that's not the best example, these ARE the gaming world forums, after all.

finally, if you ask me, you should never judge anyone based on their substance of choice, or their desire to abstain.

oh, and somebody here mentioned marillion's "misplaced childhood"; thumbs up!
