So years ago when the Wii first came out as most of you know Twilight Princess was one of the launch titles, and was purposely delayed on the gamecube so they could co-release both versions. I waited outside my job for like 4 hours to get my hands on this shit and boy was I excited. Turns out I was duped and the Wii version was a terrible port and practically unplayable in my eyes because the quality of the port left such a disgusting taste in my mouth. Not only were the terrible motion controls tacked on carelessly, the entire game was mirrored so wii owners could feel more comfortable with it. I'm not one of those complaining that link isn't supposed to be right handed, I could give less a fuck. I think it just goes to show you how lazy nintendo was when it came to making their new console more popular despite being vastly inferior to even to the generation before it.
But that's not what makes it a bad game, because there's still the gamecube version that didn't suffer from terrible motion controls. Well I waited for years to try to play the newest zelda again. But nintendo never lowers their fucking prices, the wii version is still 50 dollars new, same with smash brothers brawl and a bunch of other first party titles. I found the gamecube version for 34 bucks and during gamestops b2g1 free deal. So it was kind of like getting the game for $17, worth it or so I thought.
It was hard to stay focused on the game, there was just never a sense of adventure like in other Zelda games. It was basically Zelda on rails, go from point a to point b, lack luster story tacked on combined with easy gameplay. There's no character development and everyone is paper thin. Link is the worse offender, having the same god damn facial expression in every scene. Compare this to Wind Waker which showed a very animated Link, or Majora's Mask which had character development out the a-hole. The gameplay was barely better without the motion controls. Everything felt clunky, none of the items you get are worth a damn outside the dungeons. Turning into a wolf becomes a hassle and there's no real point to it outside of the storyline which is pretty much nonexistent. I popped in WW just to see if I wasn't crazy, and the game controls so much smoother it's not even funny, you actually used half your items more than 3 times, and they let you map items to Z instead of Midna hogging the button to turn you into a wolf (which pointless except to find grottos and in very rare cases progress through a dungeon) or warp places which you can't do in the first half of the game and you can't do both in front of people so it's stupid.
What I'm trying to get at here is the whole game is just lazy, and the praise it received just shows continued signs of terrible game critics (which isn't even a serious thing). Twilight Princess had loads of potential, but it turned out to be the Final Fantasy XIII for the Wii, they did nothing to break the mold outside tiny pokes and prods. Skyward Sword looks promising but if they pull the same bullshit like with TP I won't even know what to say.
