I still have a few weeks of very little to do, and I have sold most of my consoles by now. The only thing I've really got left to mess around with is the PS2 and there are still a bunch of games for it I have always been kind of interested in but never tried.

Anyway, I was wondering about Persona 3/4. Do I need to have played 1 and 2 to get the full story? Also, what are they like? They are a little expensive to get, well, about £12 but I'm not prepared to spend any money whatsoever on a game I won't have some fun with.

I want to know if you think I will like it. If you don't really know me some games I have liked are the Suda 51 games (killer7 especially), Deus Ex and Silent Hill 2. Some other games are okay but mostly that is pretty much all I like.

I don't really care what the gameplay mechanics are like, I'm mostly asking if the game is clever. It can be clever and funny, clever and creepy, I don't really mind. I don't want to play these if they are just kind of strange JRPGs, and I know their reputation, so what do you guys think? Should I get one of these games, and also which one do you recommend?

Oh and if there are any good creepy games for the PS2 that I can get at a low price (less than £5 preferrably), then let me know.

Thanks!

Persona 1 is coming to the PSP soon, if anything I would recommend that. However since you are looking for a PS2 game I guess I recommend SMT Persona 4 since it's a bit more polished than 3. To be completely honest though I didn't really like either too much, they pale in comparison to other SMT games like Nocturne or Devil Summoner 2, but this is my opinion.

I really wouldn't reccomend that, it was butchered to hell when it was localised, and wasn't a spectacular game to begin with. They got good at number 2.

I believe the psp version is a complete remake and I'm willing to bet the US version won't be nearly as butchered this time, though i'll agree P2 is much better, unfortunetly he's asking for ps2 games and though he can play P2 on ps2(which i strongly recomend if you can find one) actually finding a copy may be tough. as for P3/4, i don't think you would like either very much, though if you must play go for P4 since it has a better... everything, with the possbile exception to story and characters(not to sure, have yet to play P4)

jamie, I don't think that you'd like Persona 3. I haven't played any of the other Persona games, but Persona 3 is an anime dating game with an anime dungeon crawler / monster catching game tacked on. Making friends in the dating game gives you bonuses in the dungeon crawler. There isn't much else to it. You don't seem to me like the sort of person who would enjoy such a game.

I thought it was ironic or something.

I liked persona 3 it was so dark...and I seem to like dark storylines. Hell they shot them selves in the head with a gun called an envoker. The funny thing is all characters have a different way of doing this. for example like one put it in his mouth. To get the true ending I believe you to befriend every one in the game.

Mind you I never played the first game nor the second but I did play 3,4 and Devil Summoner 2.

persona 4 is not as dark as 3. It about a TV show that comes on at 12 o'clock at night on rainy day that shows the next person to be killed. You find out when they show up on the show they mysteriously disappear in to the TV and apparently your the only one that can go in to a TV to save them.

All I can remember about the story of 3 is that during night at night after 12:00 they call this the DeadZone where time stops but most people never know about this. but you and a select few are able to walk around at this time and the root of the problem seem too be on top of your school witch changes into tower During DeadZone and ever month a powerful Demon Comes out of the Tower reeking Havoc on the unsuspecting Civilians. Everyday that goes by it seems more and more People are losing there minds.

Also I would like to Add the monster System was never tacked on since I Believe it was a feature since the first game what was tacked on but was over done was the the Dating sim part witch was add in persona 3. (my guesses is to add some Depth in to the game.)

(Also I would like to Say yes my post has been for ever changing because I seem to keep adding to it. )

I would Highly Recommended 3 not just for it dark plot but more for it's deep story.(I had Fun playing) Even if the sim part are a little bit boring.

Nah, doesn't seem that way unfortunately. I didn't finish it though.

I think bort liked them. or maybe it was the shin megami tensei games, but they are related to each other so maybe it was both?  I don't know but I have also been curious about these games.  I think I would be ok with anime style as long as it wasn't TOO anime, if that makes any sense.

even if you get over the anime-influenced artwork and design

the voice acting will remind you how anime it is

do not play persona 3 whatever you do!!!!!! it is the worst!!!!!!!

seriously it is so remarkably fucking awful. it seriously rivals final fantasy x-2 as the most thoroughly revolting game for the ps2. persona 3 has absolutely no positive traits and anyone who says otherwise needs to double-check the way they perceive reality.

what you need to do is hop in the way-back machine and play persona 1 and 2 on an emulator or your ps2 if you feel like digging up a hard copy. they are outstanding games. doesn't even really matter which order you play them in either, as the stories do not really build on each other.

i guess a word of warning is that most people find persona 1 too dense to really dig into. i loved the fuck out of that game, and i know sb did too, but everyone else i knew who played it found it too awkward to get into. still, it's worth trying. if you find the atmosphere of the first two or three hours charming, it's worth sticking with. i think it's worth your time. it's an interesting transitional game in that it is a mix of story-based, dramatically driven playstation rpgs and the rough and unrefined complexity of cult snes rpgs. it walks the line between being brilliant and so bad it's good

persona 2, on the other hand, is a game that pretty much anyone can get into and enjoy. i didn't like it as much as the first one, but i'm pretty much the only person on the planet who thinks it was not as good.

Personally I think Persona 2 is better than Persona, mostly for the fact that the battlesystem is quick and I don't have to get peeved off at the formation system, but also because it gives me a clear indication of where the heck I'm meant to be going, rather than just saying 'Oh lets go to the hospital' then not telling me where it is. Other than them things it's alright, both games are annoying as heck when it comes to creating Personae though, although in Persona I've managed to get the cards for a high level (50+) Hanged Man Persona very early into the game.

Persona 3 is not a bad game it has it's flaws like slow game play because of the Dating Sim system but not as bad as Hundley makes it seem because I feel the story makes up for it. I can not say it's better then the persona 1 or 2 because I personally  never played them. Also I Would like to add about Persona 4 it had a faster game play but the story was lacking and near the end I stopped playing Because the story did not hook me in to the game.

I only saw part of Persona 3, as my friend was playing it, but it was seriously the most tedious two hours of gaming I've ever experienced.  The dialog is stilted as hell (even moreso than any FF game), the music is repetitive and annoying, and absolutely NOTHING happens for a really long stretch of time as characters talk about tofu.

It was seriously awful.  My friend is a big time japfag, so he was able to enjoy it.  But all of the main characters are like 14 years old and REALLY annoying.  The decisions they made were just stupid as hell.

I didn't even see the dungeon part because the game spent so much fucking time on all these completely pointless conversations about shit like what kind of tofu is best.

Moral of my rant: if you're a japfag, get this game.

Since you have a PS2 I reccomend the other games (made by the same people) Shin Megami Tensai: Noctourne, and Digital Devil Saga 1+2 over the recent Persona games 3 and 4.
A tool is a tool regardless. I mean if you suck, you suck, and not even the most perfect tool could save you. And if your damn good then even with the worst tool ever conceived you could chug out some high quality shit.

Based on all of these posts, I think I've decided I won't be getting any of these. I might get an iso of persona 1 or 2 in a while but 3 and 4 are out.

If your playing them for free then pick up persona 3 it's not going to breaking your bank(Assuming you have a moded ps2) and you might just like it. Also there not 14 maybe 17 or 18  years old since they are graduating and they don't talk about tofu (also you can skip most of date sim stuff but in the end it helps you.) (but in Psrsona 4 they do talk about tofu because one of the characters you can get helps her mom in a tofu shop. So he might be geting 3 and 4 confussed.)

Jesus Ryan you ever notice that most of your posts are just you commenting on whether you think the previous poster's post is terrible or not?
