yeah, but that's not what the question asks. it says narcotics LEAD directly to addiction, which is a factually correct statement. it says nothing about using narcotics once, the use of the word LEAD indicates some sort of consistent use, as in following something or going down some sort of path. you aren't being led somewhere by taking the drug once or twice, so that circumstance wouldn't logically apply here. going on a more broad level, you could replace narcotics with any addictive substance under the narcotic categorization and it would still be totally factual. opium DOES lead directly to addiction, cocaine DOES lead directly to addiction, morphine DOES lead directly to addiction. all addictive substances do. the addictive properties of many drugs work instantaneously and start the craving during first contact with the substance. if you follow addictive drugs, it WILL lead you to addiction. where the hell else would it lead you?

the sentence is badly-written and slightly ambiguous, and i'm certain this class is painful and mind-numbing, but the information was there if you stopped to actually read it. the fault is on your shoulders.

it was a dumb question the instructor was using to make you think too hard about. That's one of my gripes with tests, lots of times people will write questions in such a way not to test your knowledge on a subject but to try and trick you into answering incorrectly especially multiple choice.

EDIT: just read climbtree's post and if all that "leads directly" is part of psychology jargon that's in your textbook then you should have known that and it's your fault. IMO that's a silly way to word a causal relationship "The use of narcotics causes addiction" is a much clearer way of putting that statement.

..but what do I know I'm a philistine when it comes to psychology.

you can begin to see the differences in how people study and take tests by how they respond to this problem.

I would have figured she wanted me to say true. that's how I take tests, I answer questions how I think the professor wants me to answer them. it's not an ideal method but I find it's the most reliable. studying/testing doesn't really help me retain material anyway

yeah it effects all of your marks in the near future as every time they read your assignments they will look up the top of the page and be reminded how you pissed them off
