Hey guys, i was wondering if anyone had an experience with the United States military, specifically the Navy. It's an idea i've been kicking around. My focus in college has been Japanese language. Since there are several naval bases in Japan I thought this may be a great opportunity for me. I graduate in a couple months and it's time to start planning my next move. I am going to talk to a recruiter sometime this week, but before that I wanted to gather some information, as I know recruiters are rather self serving. Is there anyone who can tell me about this? share experiences?

Your chances of getting stationed in your dream location is pretty slim.  Maybe there are other ratings with a better chance of going where you'd like, but if you're going to do it, you should be willing to accept any number of locations where you may be needed.  I joined with the primary interest in travel (anywhere), so I really can't wait to get to my first ship.

As far as technical jobs and travel, though, the Navy can't be beat.

don't join the army if it's because you like anime and want to see japan because of anime. don't.

it is literally the worst idea.

That’s right, you have the young gaming with the old(er), white people gaming with black people, men and women, Asian countries gaming with the EU, North Americans gaming with South Americans. Much like world sporting events like the Wolrd Cup, or the Olympics will bring together different nations in friendly competition, (note the recent Asian Cup; Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia, no violence there) we come together. The differences being, we are not divided by our nationalities and we do it 24-7, and on a personal level.

We are a community without borders and without colours, the spirit and diversity of the gaming community is one that should be looked up to, a spirit and diversity other groups should strive toward.

I'd be switching majors so fast right now if my career outlook is so bleak that I was looking into joining the military after graduation

I get that the military places you wherever the hell they want, but i figured being bilingual would be a heavy deterrent...

wow.

also, i just realised i've never seen a non-japanese person speaking japanese before. it doesn't sound weird coming from this guy or anything. i guess he is adopting the accent along with everything else. there can't really be many guys like this though. i'm sure lots of people go over to japan partly because of anime but this guy...he's really dug in. he's right in there.

I think vellfire linked me that vid on IRC and apparently that guy and a bunch of other "wapanese japfag weeaboos" learn so much of their english through anime that their pronunciation or inflection or whatever is really similar to a little girl's (something featured a lot in most animes) rather than that of grown ups. That key chain with all the fluffy pikachus and stuff he has is also something only lil jap girls do, not even lil jap boys let alone lil jap grown ups

i hate to do this but you're totally wrong on this one! if he is REALLY bilingual (i.e. he didn't just hajimemashite his way through japan when he went) that is a pretty major factor in deciding what you do. and if he takes the japanese DLPT and meets their standard, there is logically no place to send him but japan. that doesn't mean that's what'll happen (they put korean linguists in iraq for some fucking reason), but it increases his chances a good amount. a friend of mine got station of choice an hour from his hometown because he's fluent in spanish.

i'm not saying DO IT (the first thing i thought when i saw this topic is "military AFTER college? yeahokay" :smo but this is what occurs.

edit: another friend of mine is with the navy and is actually stationed in japan. i don't know how he got it but i wouldn't roll the dice on this one!

I feel bad for davey too but I like how he speaks english with an accent and behaves like a caricature of a japanese person, like with those shy nods and stuff. but japanese-born anime nerds do collect stuff like he does, or so I gather from those 3d girl videos where you make it look like you have a 3d anime girl walking around on your desk with a camera and computer.

good lord that david video is really hard to watch. That guy is doing it so wrong and it makes me cringe to try and imagine being in his position

there's another video of him on youtube where he's giving a presentation about "maid bars" in japan and it gets so creeptastic right off the bat with him putting two pics of him with two different girls in a photobooth making the heart thing with their hands and the audience breaks into laughter while he nervously chuckles and then gets serious again to continue to inform the audience about these establishments.

I think it's still mostly because these people are too stupid to identify those particular inflections that you hear in anime. Once a reasonably clever person becomes fluent in Japanese it shouldn't be too hard to realize what parts of the language are colloquial, and if he can't, he's either not paying a lot of attention or just not very smart.
