Wasn't there programming uh PROGRAM for PS2 too? That came with the demos (hell yeah). Explain yourself, Mr. Chastain...

Also

NES box covers (the back part with all the information) are so dull and boring and weird... not even boring, just I dunno. Would've liked it better if they had that hair metal box art on the front and then some other art on the back and make it like an album. I seriously think they were in some weird inbetween stage like should it be more like a video box??? or a PC software box, or something else. Those screenshots are just laying there, they could put them in a frame or stagger them to generate some visual interest

Well it makes sense though because there wasn't THE INTERNET so people couldn't find out what a game was about without readin the back of the box or subscribing to magazines.

yeah I know I was just saying the front covers are always this bizarre cover art that makes the game look incredible in a cheesy way but then the back cover is just... it's not even appealing language I had a Dragon Warrior cover and they just had a checklist of stuff like what can we quantify that makes the game sound better OVER 200 SCREENS 57 SPELLS!!

haha the back cover does sound like one of those internet spam mturks make up a short paragraph using the following terms BOMB STORM HOPE COURAGE CENTAUR KOBALD TWANA

that NES color rainbow map is amazing though some indie band will pick that up I bet

Haha yeah that's pretty bad.  I think game box art is really like a LOST ART very few games have cover art that I would even want as my wallpaper much less on my shelf.  But then old games have boxart like Phalanx that put an old guy with a banjo just to differentiate itself from every other space shooter at the time.

I remember picking up an old Atari from a yard sale as a child (this was SNES days, so it was archaic even then) with a big box of games, and had a bizarre time picking cartridges out to play based on the cartridge art (no boxes, no instructions) and then trying to figure out wtf was happening on-screen with classics such as Circus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVODkDgY4JQ) and Towering Inferno (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt08VY9JaIc).  Ultimately a disappointing experience.  Where's all the rainbow flying dragons and lasers and spaceman?

Vellfire likes that box art it makes her happy

I remember I did see that game about a million years ago at a mall and I was a little thrown off about what it was. Thought it might be FARM SIMULATOR how was Harvest Moon the first farming game for SNES/probably any Nintendo console up to that point

I really have to find more webpages with bios of guys who did CONTRA 3 BOXART in 1992 or something I found the page of the guys who did Plok and they're actually still around in some capacity making little games for the IPhone. I also looked up Dave Wise (Donkey Kong Country music guy) and he is p. cool it seems he either remixed his own track for Overclocked remix or gave the ok to remix any of his stuff or both

This was a related vid to that COI vid and damn they cheated the hell out of this game.

Was Challenger like a REALLY BIG GAME in Japan?  Because looking at Japanese Famicom vids it seems to be incredibly popular but I don't think it even came out in the US at all.

As long as I'm postin about Famicom games I think Atlantis No Nazo is p. rad.  Instead of going from level one to level two there are multiple ways out of most levels and you could be on level 2 and end up at level 95 without even knowing how because some warps consist of you killing yourself over certain areas so that when you fall off the screen like Mario does you fall into the warp.  Some warps take you BACKWARDS it's a really bizarrely structured game.

I want to see something like one of these baffling, huge maze games (thinking also of Legacy of the Wizard, Milon's Secret Castle, Maze of Galious, Super Pitfall, Castle Excellent/CastleQuest) where the focus isn't on solving puzzles and reaching a goal as much as just stumbling through weird environments and trying to find secrets, figure out the logic behind the stuff you're interacting with. The reward for doing this wouldn't be a sense of accomplishment or progress, just the chance to see more weird shit that was itself interesting/entertaining--think of the word balloon rooms in Monster Party. A weird adventure game dressed up like an exploration platformer, basically. Isn't this what everyone wants?

btw I don't know how true it is but I read somewhere that they were going to localize Atlantis no Nazo as Super Pitfall 2 in the US.

It doesn't have anything to do with anything but I just came across this quote

Quote
'The word grotesque derives from a type of Roman ornamental design first discovered in the fifteenth century, during the excavation of Titus's baths. Named after the "grottoes" in which they were found, the new forms consisted of human and animal shapes intermingled with foliage, flowers, and fruits in fantastic designs which bore no relationship to the logical categories of classical art.

for a second i thought it meant that the people excavating these ruins had actually stumbled across this in real life. like actual ancient human corpses comingled with bits and pieces of animals and stone walls and vegetation. some unidentifiable clump of bone and fur with flowers and fruit spreading out of it. berries in the eyes of a skull.... there was actually an old Asterix comic which climaxed with the destruction of a set of roman holiday condos by the use of magical acorns which sprouted instantly and the closing image was of these empty buildings in a forest covered with moss and with huge oak trees rising up through destroyed rooftops. the overall effect was less right-on environmentalist than vaguely unsettling and obscene and a lot more effective imo than a sort of similar idea in JG Ballard's "The Drowned World" which had London disintegrate into a kind of prehistoric swamp. if everybody had an oceannn / across the usaaaaaa.....

actually whoa it turns out ballard actually wrote another book which did basically the same thing except in america http://www.relache.com/jg_ballard/novels/hello_america.html

Quote
Tribes of nomadic aboriginals, descended from those left behind, roam the deserted cities. Simple hunter-gatherers, they are banded together and named by the barest fragments of the past: the Executives, an NY tribe who wear old three-piece suits; the Gangsters from Chicago; the Divorcees, an all woman group.
Quote
the expedition reaches Las Vegas, finding it fully lit up and somewhat of a jungle. There they meet the President of the United States: President Charles Manson.

ahahah this sounds like fallout meets an old NES platformer. dilapidated statue of liberty scrolls past in background over and over

actually wasnt HITLER of all people obsessed with old ruins too. adolf 'dubstep' hitler...
