http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2DZlyGnr3o I first saw this years ago and it's still the most badass toy commercial I know of. How is a toy commercial "badass?"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8qpSyEAjbY Another good one
I was looking at
http://www.prismindex.com/news/ and saw this fantastic promo Byrne did for Stop Making Sense:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dE-mxVxFXLgThen I thought about
True Stories and I thought about this Fred Spencer video, which I would also describe as a Celebration of Specialness:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqIp4m0fWTQAlso, when I see the word Prism, I think of Pryzm: The Dark Unicorn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK8Z_BqUQYshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVfRGsfnI_c Thexder came out on a lot of platforms but the PC-88 version is the coolest, I think. The story of a robot man who can turn into a jet and his adventure through a blocky techno-maze. What is this place? How often do you see a SHMUPpy game where there's no consequence for bonking into the walls? The whole thing is built around this physical transformation and the way it changes your movement but it's not done in the context of a setting you can relate to real-world space. Use your superpowers inside an alienating, claustrophobic maze. Like a dream where you get the ability to fly but you're stuck in a gigantic series of shafts and tunnels.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGQkAT_nm3g Folks, the X68000 version of Fantasy Zone has a Space Harrier-themed stage. I wish Opa-Opa was real....... ...
Was thinking about Monster Party, which was apparently developed by Human. I'm going by what Wikipedia says Human did (perilous)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Entertainment and you can trace the horror stuff from Monster Party to Laplace no Ma to the Clock Tower games to "Mizzurna Falls:"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puzDxJdRFHQ Whether this actually has horror elements, I'm not sure. It's some followup to the polygonal Clock Tower games with a heavy
Twin Peaks influence, apparently. YOU CAN DRIVE A CAR. Briefly see what combat looks like at the front of this clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etejtuQnlu0 What is this?
Monster Party is like a wacky horror manga for kids. Maybe comparing it to Gegege no Kitarou makes sense.
Laplace no Ma is Lovecraft-influenced, still has a JRPG/Manga vibe.
Clock Tower (snes) is Italian horror, contains specific references to Argento films (especially
Phenomena.)
Clock Tower 2 (psx) feels more like Italian horror digested and converted into euro-influenced American slasher stuff.
Mizzurna Falls is an attempt at doing Lynch (I guess.)
Clock Tower: Ghost Head looks like it fits somewhere with the other CT games.
Pretty interesting for one company's output, especially when you throw in other odd or interesting titles like Kabuki: Quantum Fighter, that NES Gilligan's Island game, S.O.S., The Firemen, Remote Control Dandy.
S.O.S. obviously came from the same line of thought that produced the first Clock Tower.
I guess Suda worked there for a time and did the "Twilight Syndrome" games?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkNgi7k5ejc This looks more like Clock Tower than the Clock Tower sequels.
