http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8l7inSbqcI Virtual Hydlide on Saturn. I forgot about this game. Feels like watching a dream.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRmGTvOQN8w ToPoLo by Artdink for PSX. Skip past the block building part in the beginning to see weird gameplay with the Cubivore-looking things running around.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIAdFxS4YXo Pepsiman for PSX.  I never saw footage of this before tonight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pfDH6nxBLQ Lifescape 2 for Saturn. I think this is supposed to be the interior of a stomach. Rolling pink hills surrounded by curtains of bubbles in stomach acid.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVxd_7A1TVY Yoake no Mariko for PS2. Holy fuck, that's really Spumco. Never heard of this. I'm mostly digging through this one guy's youtube uploads right now.

Sengoku Turb (Dreamcast)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30EPiokpVLA Lotsa cutscenes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nde6v_vtDOc Gameplay (ORDER->SUICIDE)
I guess I'm in favor of whatever's happening here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXOKaFqGkE0 Dam Dam Stompland for PSX. Some kind of chaotic New Balance deathmatch advergame? I guess?

There are so many D3 simple 2000 games.  From the "GIRL VS BUGS SUBGENRE:" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVvazrt7hYM
Feels like it could turn into nightmarish pornography at any minute.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3x-DE-kp-8 Some PC-9801 adventure game that looks a lot like Maniac Mansion. This ends just as it's about to get interesting.

is any Hydlide game normal - it's like each one is trying to be the next Legend of Zelda/ the Coldplay to Zelda's Radiohead but fails miserably because of some illuminati conspiracy behind it but seriously every second of that video is amazing

Artdink is a pretty cool company my life dream would be to work there (compose music for them)

Yoake no Mariko is underwhelming to me because Spumco does do other stuff... like that Bjork video etc. and so the feeling of 'omeg the Ren and Stimpy people' is kind of lost on me

wtf are D3 simple 2000 games

Sengoku TURB is pretty cool. Dreamcast graphics are like the SNES graphics of the 3D era. As in like they achieved some perfect balance of 'good' graphics vs. need for ingenuity

Stompland I would actually buy. I like the bit where the guy jumps into the floor

those Japanese computers PC-88 PC-98 etc. etc. fascinate me they're so butt-ugly yet for some reason the people making the game still seemed to TRY with the graphics. Yume Nikki is kind of underwhelming to me when there is a random back-catalogue of games like this in Japan

All these games look surprisingly good/lots of polygons? for PS1/Saturn. Sega Saturn/Dreamcast kind of fascinate me because they kind of lost to Sony but had all these ridiculous games in the works of which I'm not sure which ones actually got released

Pepsiman is amazing of course that's what regular life looks like to me all the time

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2DZlyGnr3o I first saw this years ago and it's still the most badass toy commercial I know of. How is a toy commercial "badass?"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8qpSyEAjbY Another good one

I was looking at http://www.prismindex.com/news/ and saw this fantastic promo Byrne did for Stop Making Sense: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dE-mxVxFXLg

Then I thought about True Stories and I thought about this Fred Spencer video, which I would also describe as a Celebration of Specialness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqIp4m0fWTQ

Also, when I see the word Prism, I think of Pryzm: The Dark Unicorn http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK8Z_BqUQYs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVfRGsfnI_c Thexder came out on a lot of platforms but the PC-88 version is the coolest, I think. The story of a robot man who can turn into a jet and his adventure through a blocky techno-maze. What is this place? How often do you see a SHMUPpy game where there's no consequence for bonking into the walls? The whole thing is built around this physical transformation and the way it changes your movement but it's not done in the context of a setting you can relate to real-world space. Use your superpowers inside an alienating, claustrophobic maze. Like a dream where you get the ability to fly but you're stuck in a gigantic series of shafts and tunnels.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGQkAT_nm3g Folks, the X68000 version of Fantasy Zone has a Space Harrier-themed stage. I wish Opa-Opa was real....... ...

Was thinking about Monster Party, which was apparently developed by Human. I'm going by what Wikipedia says Human did (perilous) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Entertainment and you can trace the horror stuff from Monster Party to Laplace no Ma to the Clock Tower games to "Mizzurna Falls:" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puzDxJdRFHQ Whether this actually has horror elements, I'm not sure. It's some followup to the polygonal Clock Tower games with a heavy Twin Peaks influence, apparently. YOU CAN DRIVE A CAR. Briefly see what combat looks like at the front of this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etejtuQnlu0 What is this?
Monster Party is like a wacky horror manga for kids. Maybe comparing it to Gegege no Kitarou makes sense.
Laplace no Ma is Lovecraft-influenced, still has a JRPG/Manga vibe.
Clock Tower (snes) is Italian horror, contains specific references to Argento films (especially Phenomena.)
Clock Tower 2 (psx) feels more like Italian horror digested and converted into euro-influenced American slasher stuff.
Mizzurna Falls is an attempt at doing Lynch (I guess.)
Clock Tower: Ghost Head looks like it fits somewhere with the other CT games.
Pretty interesting for one company's output, especially when you throw in other odd or interesting titles like Kabuki: Quantum Fighter, that NES Gilligan's Island game, S.O.S., The Firemen, Remote Control Dandy.
S.O.S. obviously came from the same line of thought that produced the first Clock Tower.
I guess Suda worked there for a time and did the "Twilight Syndrome" games? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkNgi7k5ejc This looks more like Clock Tower than the Clock Tower sequels.

UNRELATED VIDEO: HITLER'S DIFFICULTIES: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jn51OklD1Nw
AND ANOTHER ONE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWfHgjIVBgQ
It's called Linda³ AGAIN and what the fuck is this
http://www.giantbomb.com/linda3/61-22985/ Ah, it's a monster collecting RPG. Of course.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=De-Z0h1UCEU Here's a fun sports game!!! End of post!!!

http://www.youtube.com/user/danooct1 this guy's uploaded a ton of virus videos. It's like a demoscene's evil doppleganger.

The psychologist is David Cronenberg. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100260/

ahaha.  great minds. . . . .

also yeah all those videos are excellent but i have a special fondness for pepsiman just for the sudden detour into horrifying postapocalypse wasteland without comment. today a windows live messenger window thingy told me about Jennifer Aniston's Top 10 Dieting Tips and it was paired with a black and white picture of Jennifer Aniston standing in a bleak, featureless wasteland devoid of all life.

Use your superpowers inside an alienating, claustrophobic maze. Like a dream where you get the ability to fly but you're stuck in a gigantic series of shafts and tunnels.

On the subject of alienating claustrophobic mazes I played Foton - The Ultimate Game On Planet Earth last night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qElGCjKWCb4 wander through an infinite indistinguishable tunnel with absolutely no way to orient yourself or gauge your position relative to anywhere else. Sometimes a fast song starts to play while monsters hurl themselves at you from the depths of the tunnel, sometimes not. Other music cues kick in for screens which are apparantly identical from all the rest for no obvious reason. There is a seemingly useless radaresque thing that goes ping. Halfway through the video the character accidentally stumbles down an enormous flashing chasm before landing on the ground and continuing through more indistinguishable tunnels.

also i really like all the GRADIENTS or whatever in those bloodlust videos / videogame equivalent of webcomic authors just pasting characters against a shifting gradient void in order to represent dynamism

Good lord. Everything posted on this page so far has been amazing.

Sengoku Turb (Dreamcast)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nde6v_vtDOc Gameplay (ORDER->SUICIDE)

What is Turb? I've seen that word pop up in the title of a number of games and I have no idea what it means.

http://www.pc98.org/bkturb.html
http://www.pc98.org/sengokut.html
http://www.pc98.org/turb1.html

Is Turb an actual thing? Do they mean turbo? Is Turb a character?

What is Turb? ??? ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfPMJUb91mU

Check out the parallax scrolling in this game. It's the most nauseating thing I've ever seen. I actually can't watch this without getting motion sickness. I have a bad headache because I just watched JIM POWER vids for the last 30 minutes. This game has to take place on an infinitely expanding torus. If that level 1 song sounds familiar to you, it's because it was stolen from YS 3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFHUnT4xp7g

This is excellent man, please add more. What game is the planet map from? It's beautiful. PS - I made nude rom hacks of 2 of the games on there.

My guess is that it's just an attempt at creating a corrupted slang version of "Turbo?"

Realized "EASTERN MIND" blog has a writeup on Mizzurna Falls: http://easternmind.tumblr.com/post/2906013149/mizzurna
To sort of summarize/comment on that:
Bummed that this didn't get localized (guess it had no chance) 'cause this is exactly the kind of thing I would have grabbed in the late 90s. It's apparently a free-roaming adventure game where you have access to the entire town. You drive around in your little Volkswagen (which can run out of gas!) and follow people around and look for clues while you're solving a mystery. It's one of those games where the clock is constantly running and you constantly have to be in the right place at the right time to observe/participate in critical or optional events. Sounds Shenmue-y, but it came out before Shenmue. Sounds really ambitious, but you know the experience of completing the thing would probably require multiple playthroughs, repeating the same sequences until you figure out what the thing wants you to do. If you could marry this kind of design to a system for a branching narrative that's less tethered to the idea of "good" and "bad" ("success"/"failure") endings, you could really have something. Has anyone done that/is anyone doing that?

EASTERN MIND's an interesting blog from an interesting guy who posts about more obscure Japanese games, esp. Playstation/Dreamcast/Saturn stuff. Some more highlights:
http://easternmind.tumblr.com/post/315768336/i-q-ending Had never seen the ending for Intelligent Qube. "Playing puzzle games makes you a better person."
http://easternmind.tumblr.com/post/318627771/iqfinals Endings for I.Q.2. More of the same, somewhat different.
http://easternmind.tumblr.com/post/320221635/clocktowercomic Little comic that was released with the PSX Clock Tower re-release (pretend this ran in Nintendo Power after the Star Fox comic ended.)

I remembered "EASTERN MIND" because I stumbled across a video of the game it's named after:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxHfeJ55aiM
Osamu Sato, who I guess is "The Guy Who Was Largely Responsible For LSD: The Dream Emulator," had done this game years prior to LSD. Pre-dating "90s low-poly," it's "90s pre-rendered" and it's kind of (I'm gonna say intentionally) hideous but I don't think I've seen a more fascinating or bizarre product of the post-Myst wave. Would not turn down the chance to poke around in this one.
Sato's company, OSD, has an official youtube channel. Here's the best video I found there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEF73MZejyE

Found a guy who uploaded two animated shorts he made in HyperCard as a kid:

i beat him twice by using both 'ghost potion's and then 'real potion' and then just using HORSE1CANS but it's not a sure thing! there's probably something i'm missing.

also i'll update the maps page when i get a chance but if anyone needs a 'geocities fix' or just general web design help then you should check http://jv030482.tripod.com/nwgraphics/index.htm. i was going to post a bunch more cool geocities sites but really the only way to get the full experience is by clicking on random pages in the geocities.ws archives. they're all wonderful. http://geocities.ws/index.php?page=1557 ENTER THE VOID.

go for it! i was gonna post a mix a few weeks back but wasn't sure in absence of happyzoosforums etc. also if you mean that sleepers album i put up a while back i can reupload it if you want!

ps on subject of albums i was cleaning up internet favourites and found this http://stonethatthebuilderrefused.blogspot.com/ it's GW MUSICBLOG i guess where steel and washcycle and some other guys posted some albums up. it might already be common knowledge to everyone but i thought it was interesting because there's some cool stuff and also for the uh more-depressing-but-cant-stop-myself reason of reading old steel posts about music and realising that it's too late to talk about frank sinatra or ugk or whoever with him now. i don't know i'm gross. earl there's a carla bozulich album there too that you might be interested in although i haven't heard it yet.

yeah I got that one. not my favorite http://stonethatthebuilderrefused.blogspot.com/2007/12/carla-bozulich-evangelista-2006.html "female tom waits" is funny because she covered on the nickel pretty well on a female vocalist tribute to tom waits album

and yeah, I meant the sleepers - the less an object. I'm on a waste binge and it sounds like a dumpster full of scented salon products.
