Behind most of this stuff is the idea that there was a "golden age of truth" where there were "gatekeepers" and everything was decided based on "facts". 
 
That idea is a delusion. The delusion is that any problem and any question can be distilled down something from which a single correct answer can be determined by "factual" analysis. We have democracy and we have politics because most issues society faces cannot be decided by "factual" analysis.
 
In the old days, what the "gatekeepers" did was keep ideas out of the public square of the mainstream media. But the gatekeepers never had the power to eliminate the memes. The memes simply circulated in spaces beyond their reach. The mainstream media was able to create the illusion of the "consensus" society, but no more than that.
 
What the Internet has done is return is to the media world which existed for most of American history. A competitive and political media world. The few decades where a handful of giant media monopolies claimed to be presenting "unbiased" information was the outlier.
