i'm trying to get into some lowpoly 3D modelling and texturing in Wings 3D. come with me on my journey into the stars.

You can see from the blurry car hood that I haven't really got the hang of textures yet! also the shading is entirely arbitrary right now since i haven't got the hang of thinking in 3d yet. i think the lil driver dude came out okay though.

Anyway feel free to post your own 3d stuff or any "tips & tricks" you might have in the subject!!

This is fantastic.  I've heard of Wings 3D but I don't think I've ever used it.  Is it a fairly simple program?  Because the only sort of 3D I've ever wanted to do is low-poly stuff more or less exactly like you're doing but most 3D programs are way overkill.

yeah very much this. the 3D stuff i was taught to do was in the high end expensive programs like Maya and 3D Studio Max, which i really disliked. they were so cumbersome and rigid and made things very difficult (especially on a slow computer). but i still have the... PASSION for 3D stuff and am very interested to get back into it.

I did simple 3D stuff in OpenGL and that ruled but textures were kind of a pain and it's also code vs an editor so it'd probably be slightly easier to deal with stuff without having to write a bunch of code.

thanks guys! also yeah i find wings 3d fairly intuitive, a lot more so than blender or whatever, and definitely more geared towards stripped-down lowpoly stuff i think (also free as well!). the only thing i really had to get my head around for it was building stuff from the ground up using simple cubes and vertices and extruding faces etc to form the shape of stuff but this is actually a lot of fun once you start getting the hang of it and thinking in these terms. textures / uv mapping is also kind of annoying but i think i'm getting the hang of it a little more now!

i've been playing a lot of playstation games recently and i love lowpoly 3D graphics. those examples particularly remind me of ff8 and are really cool. i have a bunch of textures from ff8 so i am going to study them in a bid to understand how they're applied to 3D models

those tf2 ones are heavily reminiscient of the metal gear solid cast

i just made a mickeymouse. i cheated here because it was a bitch to try to unwrap the model to make a texture so i ended up just making one for the face and colouring the rest in wings.

unfortunately it looks like the texture was corrupted.....

Holy shit, these are awesome and the model/texture both feel so much like Megaman Legends stuff

surprised this isn't some kind of retro trend yet like sprite/pixel art that's better than any actual sprite art used for an existant game

I made Anteater out of just cubes in order to figure out how to do things in Wings 3D.  I'll probably redo it at some point but uh HERE IS MY FIRST THING~

In the future I will do proper polygons instead of just stacking cubes because when I turned on the materials or w/e I realized "oh that fucks everything up".  But since this was just a practice go I wasn't too worried about fixing it.

that anteater owns and it's really good for your first time in the program too! it took me forever to work out textures etc as well as rotations and things.

here is a really generic boring knight person! i was kind of hyperactive/sloppy with the shading and stuff and the colours didnt come off as well as i'd imagined but oh well.

I originally tried to use Wings 3D on my macbook but since I had no middle mouse button I couldn't rotate, I put it on my desktop last night and yeah that's what I came out with.  It took me several tutorials to figure out how to unwrap the model and get it into photoshop but once I did I had no problem texturing.  I'm gonna play with it some more today and see what else I can come out with!
