Yeah, the main point of Raz's post is thus:
If you give a mouse a lightsaber, he's better yes, but if you give a gigantic massive robot killing machine a lightsaber, he's better too.

EDIT:
uhg...Final Destination.

No one ever mentions the other stages you can play in tournaments. :<

Also you have to realize that any character who is higher tiered will be even stronger with access to items.

Yeah but I don't think the difference is always the same.  I don't think items always just scale things up equally.  Perhaps one character gets a little better with a certain item while another character gets much better with the same item.  And some characters are much better only with CERTAIN items.  And some characters are better at retrieving items, like pokeballs.

My original point is that when you consider items, number of players, and all kinds of arenas there are a nearly limitless number of possible scenarios that you can get into in a fight.  This means that it becomes very difficult to create a tier based on all possible scenarios in Smash Bros but much easier by eliminating a lot of possibilities by looking at just the tournament environment.

Oh, I don't know about that.  I don't think items always just scale things up equally.  I think some characters are definitely better with items.  And some characters are much better only with CERTAIN items.  And some characters are better at retrieving items.

Yes, some characters are better at retrieving items...but some characters I don't think are inherently better with items. Items act the same no matter who uses them.

Also I play with items for fun, but I never use ones that deal damage personally. I will avoid them like the plague. The fact of the matter is, I'm playing a fighting game, and I'd rather kill someone with my character, than kill someone with a random item. I understand I'm gimping myself in the environment, and maybe not playing to win fully, but I don't find any enjoyment in using a crutch to kill someone.

EDIT:
Also if items were allowed, the tier list would still be decided on the actual characters alone. Thats just the way it works.

Like, in 3S, its based on character strengths/weaknesses, and not including some "random" (to some extent) elements like parrying. Yeah, Hugo can be good if you have MAD PARRY SKILLS but not every Hugo has MAD PARRY SKILLS, so hes still low on the tier list.

Well the thing about SSB is that it was not made to be a straight up fighting 1v1 kind of a game. I can understand turning items off or limiting them, but people should really play on different stages then just flat in tournaments.

They play on stages that don't have random elements and unfair advantages.

Well, for example, Sheik throws two stars with the Star Rod. More people have multiple stars in Brawl, now, but not every character. If that's not an advantage with the Star Rod, I don't know what is!

The Star Rod sucks.

Ugh... It was an example of how items don't act the same with each character. Some people have faster bat swings, other people's lightsabers extend longer, etc etc.

EDIT: Oh... Haha, my bad. Didn't realize. Man, I feel retarded now!

i'd agree if you had no chance to escape, if only because it'd be the only thing of its kind and SUPER IMBA the game

well not only that, it's extremely situational. from what i can see, you have to be positioned properly, to have the right percentage, hope the guy misses BOTH his DI and his tech attempts and that he doesn't pop high enough after your smash that he wall bounces or has a chance to air recover.

so it's like, a 1 in a 1000 chance to be used in a stage that has a wall, and in SSBB there's like 5 of those.

What exactly does DI and tech mean?

Hey, all you guys that may or may not check the Dojo anymore!  The update was ZSS's FS, and apparently there's a way to turn between Samus and Zero Suit anytime at all!  It's just really REALLY tricky.

Di is basically holding left or right really fast when falling so that your character moves away from harm's way, and teching is is to tap L or R as soon as you hit a wall or the grond to get up instantly or roll away.

Edit: http://www.smashwiki.com/wiki/DI this explains DI better than i do.

I don't actually like how you can switch between Zero Suit and Varia Samus anytime you want. Honestly, I'd rather not have another Sheik/PT-like character. I just hope most people will select their favorite from the starting menu.

The movie was cool; I'd already seen it though. What intrigues me the most is the last line of the update.
