Got a chance to play Brawl yesterday. Man is it badass. Only played with Marth and Meta Knight. Did around 10 matches total. My first game I got 2 stocked (out of 3 stocks). The next match I beat the guy who owns the game and ended his 13 win streak. After that, I ended up winning 5 matches in a row. A Pit player beat the guy who beat me and he then proceeded to beat down everyone in the place for around 15 matches straight. Pit is oh so broken. 5 jumps plus an amazing recovery, good speed, good priority, fast attacks, projectile...insane.
Marth is awesome in Brawl. He plays very similarily to his Melee counterpart. Took me a while to get used to him because I was trying to wavedash, l-cancel, and JC grab. Nothing's more amusing than running up to your opponent expecting a JC grab only to end up jumping and airdodging. I was starting to get out of the habit after the 8th match or so.
Brawl is going to kill the Melee fanbase. It'll die so insanely fast. I went back to play Melee a bit after the guy with Brawl left and it just felt so outdated. The graphics look so shitty and the game just seems like it's run its course. Nobody will play it after Brawl, even the most die-hard players.
Damn.
Well, it looks like I WILL be around for the US launch after all, so I should be able to participate in the tourney and whatever. I am looking forward to testing my skill against you all.
Awesome. That makes 25 people, unless Mateui's in. Which leads me to my next question...Mateui, are you in?
Tournament Tips (for people participating in the Gamestop tournament):
In case you don't know, the first tournament will be ran using the Wii's own tournament mode. Each match is
only one minute long. As far as additional rules are concerned, it seems likely that
all items will be on.
Stages will be either random or battlefield only. More likely than not,
only the starting roster will be allowed. This is how earlier Nintendo tournaments were done. What does this mean for you?
Well, since there is no stock, the person who gets the most kills in the first minute will win. Since you've probably never played the game, you will want to test out the controls first and get a feel for the game, but this will screw you over since you only have one minute to get a KO. Instead, you should focus on camping. It may be cheap, but if you want to win, this would be your best bet. Camp items and punish your enemy's mistakes. Shield grab a lot.
When it comes to picking a character, you may want to avoid characters that have bad KO moves. This includes Meta Knight and Sonic. You want to pick either powerful characters, characters you're familiar with from Melee/64, or characters that are balanced all around. Kirby, Pit, Ike, Mario, and Fox come to mind.
Basically, to sum it up, you should:
-Pick a character that you're familiar with, is very powerful, or is well balanced.
-Camp and camp a lot. Dodge, roll, shieldgrab, and chuck items at your enemies.
-If you get a smash ball, try not to choke and use it only when you know you'll connect because it may be your only kill.
-If you opponent gets the smash ball, either beat it out of them (only when you're sure your hits will connect) or dodge around like a madman (only do this if you're already a kill ahead).
This is the
biggest tip I can give you but it's also kinda cheap:
When you get a KO in timed matches, you get one point for killing your opponent and your opponent gets -1 for getting killed. This will leave you at +1 and them at -1. When your hit percentage gets really high, to avoid a kill, you could just suicide, which will give you -1, putting you at 0, but still ahead of your enemy. This will prevent a tie by preventing the enemy from killing you and will bring you back to life with 0%, allowing you to live the rest of the match. Make sure you do not suicide after already getting hit in the air since it will count as a kill for the enemy. You have to land on the ground and then run/jump off without getting hit in the process. It's cheap, but if you get a KO and want to keep the lead, it's the best thing you can do.
Also, if you played Melee and used advanced techniques of any kind, make sure you play an hour or two but avoid using the advanced techniques completely to get used to not doing them. It caused me many deaths when I was playing Brawl and would have probably screwed me over at the tournament.
Oh, and if you want to play just for the hell of it, then by all means, go for it. This advice is only for people who actually want to win and would like a bit of an upper hand.
