I just got a R4 card and was wondering if anyone has some suggestions for good homebrew games and apps to try out.  So far I've been getting a kick out of Virus DS Xmas Edition, Setsuzoku No Puzzle, and Virtual Game Maker DS.

Holy shit... I made the graphic interface for VGMDS. Nice seeing it in a random screenshot! The new version is supposed to come out soon so be on the lookout for that.

I really need to get an R4. I used to use a shitty GBA movie player and pass card and it had terrible compatibility. I hear R4s are just swell :)

The new version of VGMDS came out last week if I remember correctly.  It's ver. 0.98 which is what I'm using at the moment.

A R4 (or other flash cart) and a micro sd card. A R4 costs around $35.

If you are finding reason enough to occupy cart space with VGMDS, then I probably will too. I'll give it a try.

The most bad-ass painting app for the DS you'll ever see.

If anyone knows a good one for pixel-art, then please tell! I tried Phidias, but it's latest build won't recognize my touch pad on R4 (even after patching it).

I find it hilarious the PSP version of Cave Story was finished a month before the DS one and then the guy making the DS port pretty much up and disappeared.

And I have to admit, I didn't know there was a lot of cool freeware applications available for the DS.  I might have to buy one of these R4 carts although I can't believe they're that cheap.  BACK IN MY DAY, a GBA cart was like... 120 quid.

I can't find the site that I bought mine from, but digimartz.com/ has it listed for $38.50

I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but I did find a decent looking sprite editor.  Sprite Editor DS v0.2

Yea its just a demo so far :/. I think another team is working on X-Com for DS as well.

Well you also need a MiniSD card and a MiniSD card reader which puts the price back up to like $100 or so depending on what you get.

Mine will be arriving in the mail tomorrow so I'm just as curious to see what there is out there.
I picked mine up from http://www.gamerswonder.com/
They're based in sydney and I don't know if they do international postage or not but I got my R4 + 1GB Memcard for a combined total of $98.30 AUD inc. postage.

The R4DS makes you play games and homebrew on it. It's not hacking or anything. Once you put it in your DS, it automatically boots up.
Basically, you drag and drop shit from your computer onto it. It can be movies, music, downloaded DS games, etc.

And I got mine for about $40.

I dunno enough about commercial games for the DS but if Nintendo hasn't made a new version of Mario Paint that's like Colors yet, then they're a-holes and deserve to lose money

A mini SD card reader comes with the R4.

Anyways, I found more awesome games that I'm becoming addicted to.

Word Up

You drag the stylus across the letters to make words and keep the letters from making it to the top of the upper screen.

Meteora

Basically your job is to stop the enemy from hitting your planet with it's meteors, and to counter attack and destroy him.  The game has a unique spell system that lets you combine spells for more powerful effects.

I didn't even know there were some decent homebrew apps out there.  I got an R4 back in July and all I really have on it are game videos, my transferred music from my standalone MP3 player and the DSOrganizer PDA application.

Definitely need to check out Word Up, Virus and Virtual Game Maker.

Alright, well I got Virtual Game Maker, but can't figure out how to start a new file for creation.  I keep managing to boot up the Zelda demo that is included.

It takes a little getting used to.  There's a tutorial on the official website: VGM-DS tutorial
