The stuff I heard wasn't really the Punk I was referring to when I said Punk I mean more Punk Rock which is boring boring boring.
I'd describe this stuff more as math rock or experimental but genres are a mess so whatever.

noise punk is a band that plays noise with a punk attitude.

Shellac is one of the punker bands out there, but I never classified them as noise. Big Black is noisier.
I still insist the best combination of noise and punk is Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. The 4 tracks of the album is pure noise, and the concept of the album is as punk as can be.

I feel vaguely ashamed to say this, but I never actually listened to that album... I might pick it up later in the week, though...

This kinda depends on what you mean by punk... If you think that punk refers to that obnoxious frat-boy-rock bullshit hawked by NOFX and Sum 41 and all those other mohicanned shitheads, you'd be right in saying it's boring... But punk actually just refers to music that values stuff like energy and innovation and a DIY mentality over stuff like technical skill, etc...

I get the DIY motivation and the energy and stuff like that but I'd prefer people who are good at instruments rather than someone who has a good "message".
Music is about music, if you want to spread a message and happen to be a shitty musician then go make a private club or something. However if they incorporate both message and musicianship then I am all for it.

that's such a snob's cliched phrase

Music is not about BEING GOOD WITH THE INSTRUMENTS, but rather about making a composition of sounds that you'll find appealing. Messages are part of artistic expression, usually it is what motivate many musicians when the aim is not mostly financial gain.
Personally I don't give a damn about instrumental talent at all. All I care for is stuff that sound nice, sounds that are interestingly arranged, that seem to emit a feeling or message or whatever.
Being good at instruments is the last thing going on in my mind

Im also aware of this, I dont listen to stuff for technicality either. All I'm saying is, I dont like Punk Rock which is shitty recording, shitty playing but cool message.

I don't like music which sounds bad because the artist SUCKS. It's a pretty simple opinion.

And then I revised my opinion in the second post. (oops and my third post at the top of the page). So I was no longer referring to the bands he was talking about as I stated.

well people that arent good at their instruments frequently struggle to create stuff that sounds nice, is interestingly arranged and seem to emit a feeling or message

cause I can play guitar with all the feeling in the fucking world but you wouldnt want to listen to it becuase I cant play guitar for half a damn

also: "noise punk is a band that plays noise with a punk attitude. " this doesnt help me much

lol Wolf Eyes.

The Gerogerigegege are awesome, I'm reasonably sure that they're relatively similar to this "noise-punk" you speak of. They're definitely a band that all of you I-ONLY-APPRECIATE-TECHNICAL-GREATNESS-HOW-CAN-YOU-LISTEN-TO-THAT-ALL-IT-IS-IS-RANDOM-NOISES folks can all safely skip over.

man shep you are really acting like a snob/pretentious person. its prolly just the way you write but giving something like Metal Machine Music artistic value and defending it on the basis of punk attitude and message is pretty much the definition of pretentious, which really makes sense knowing that you like Zappa (and Beefheart perhaps?) however, to not sound like a total dick, i admire your musical knowledge and opinions and taste. the way you describe punk seems to easily convey that this is your genre of choice along with bands like AMT. You are a rebel and freespirited and like defying conventional notions in most of life's aspects.

In conclusion, I have an extemely open mind about music, but I also have a pretty good idea of what "is" and what critics/fans "say is". I would enjoy having a debate with you.
