Bioshock has my favorite game opening.  It's really mysterious and disorienting and I can imagine that if the game media hadn't told me what would happen ahead of time I would have probably crapped my pants (my girlfriend did when she saw it though).

Earthbound's opening fucking kicked ass, the least of the reasons being that the name entry screen was memorable beyond being a black box you put letters into.

Also Oblivion's intro isn't particularly good or interesting on any meaningful level, but the part where title theme starts in just as captain picard finishes his monologue and the camera does that flyby of the Imperial City really appeals to the dumb animal part of my brain that loves booming orchestral music and pretty pictures

Personally I like games that start you out with control of the character, and then build to the big epic opening.  Few games do this, but it's a really great way to get the player involved before anything really starts.

Xenosaga II. I mean, seriously. It's beautiful, it adds an aire of mystique to the characters (lol DAMNED SPY AND MARY MAGDELENE'S BF <-- XS3 spoilers) and sets the mood over-all. Oh, and shooting up robots is cool too.

It's SO MUCH COOLER with the English voices, but I only saw the Japanese version. :< The news report in particular is awesome with the English voice-overs.


XS3 would have an awesome intro if they cut out all the stuff about Kevin and just left Shion/Canaan/Miyuki/Doctus in the dogfight through the city.


The best part about XS2's intro is that in XS3, the party goes into the past where this intro takes place. In XS2's intro, you'll notice that Canaan force-ejects the weapon hand and it falls to the ground. This is while they're on a mission to save Jr. and the URTVs. In XS3, the weapon hand almost falls on Jr. as you go through the war-torn city. =D

EDIT: Actually the best part of the intro is that the music starting when the E.S. (giant robots) are launched is used for XS2's end theme and XS3's theme/end theme... with different lyrics. CONSISTENCY FTW

I'm not sure if this counts too but I like the first little ingame bit of SMT: Nocturne where you are lanky jap schoolkid and then the world explodes and you are a lanky jap kid with cool tattoos in the middle of nowhere.

I'm pretty disappointed with Wild Arms 5 intro.. I mean the music is really good but I feel like they could have done better with the animation..I feel like the song doesnt match the animation.. idk how to explain it.

Mortal Kombat Armageddon's Opening never gets old either.
also the N64 Smash brothers opening is one that I recommend watching over and over. I dont really know why I guess its because of nostalgia. ah well

I didn't love what I've played of Bioshock (I do plan to finish it soon though) but the opening is incredible. The crash (the fire on the water is so awesome), the elevator ride, everything is fantastic.


Also shit yeah at Chrono Cross - that song is amazing.
