BEING DEVELOPED BY BIOWARE

Wow, so they finally learned something from the Mario RPGs and took the plunge themselves...
Upon looking further, this has actually been in development for a long time but I haven't seen a topic about it here, so here it is now...

Quote from: Wikipedia
Sonic is on vacation after defeating Eggman some time ago, when he receives a call from Tails, stating that Knuckles has been kidnapped, and that the Chaos Emeralds are disappearing[2].

The story is split into two acts. The first takes place in Sonic's world, with the team attempting to unravel the situation they are in, whilst also stopping the Master Emerald from being taken. The second act sees Sonic and the team travelling to another dimension in order to stop a new threat to their own world.[2]

The game will feature areas and music from previous Sonic games, ranging from Emerald Town, Tails Lab and Central City to more classic fields such as Green Hill Zone and Mystic Ruins; new areas will also feature, such as Blue Ridge Zone.[2]

A new character will be introduced to the game, known as Shade[6]; apart from the fact that she is female, no further information is known.

Okay so quoting wikipedia isn't the most accurate source but I'm sure it doesn't vary too far from the overall truth...
Of course, from reading it I'm not really into the concept, reminds me of the Sonic the Hedgehog failure that hit the 360, except rather than continuing with Blaze, they choose a new character, sounding like a cheap knock-off of Shadow... (shade).
Not to mention she looks like a cross between Midna and a Rabbit on Crack...

Overall the HUD looks very unpolished, not only that, I don't get SEGA's obsession with the fucking Grading System, I mean seriously it's tolerable in a platformer, but in an RPG? After a battle? Come on!
Maybe I'm missing something but I don't want to be told how I did in a battle via a Letter Rating.

Secondly, maps look okay, somewhat good for a DS game, but the map HUD and the graphical styles tend to clash a bit with the 3D sprites.

Third, only judging by the box cover, it shows WiFi compatibility, I can't think of what they would use it for, It would get tiresome if it was say... Sonic Party A vs. Sonic Party B...

Overall, the game looks promising, definitely a break from the predictable sonic mould that SEGA has been pushing recently, and hopefully it will pay off for them.
So what do you all think of this?
Monstrosity or Gem?

You didn't mention that the game is being developed by BioWare.
I have high hopes because BioWare don't have a history of making terrible games.

I vaguely remember there being a topic about this or something but I might be wrong.

It looks pretty good, I've never been a massive fan of Sonic (bar the original ones and 2 Battle on GC) but I'll give it a whirl when it comes out. I do love the portable RPG's and Bioware, and there hasn't been many good portable RPG's this generation.

I just hope they put in some references to the Archie Comics series.

Sorry, but Sally's...not canon.  :fogetcry:

I hate 3D on the DS, it looks like crap. The Dark Brotherhood... Maybe Sonic will turn into a Cloaked Reaper instead of a werewolf in this game?

Also, this isn't that weird of a pairing. Sega publishes all of Bioware's games in Japan anyways.

While I love all of Bioware's work, this latest piece looks like a bad joke.

As it stands now it looks like a generic, poorly made RPG.

Capcom pulled it off nicely with battle network. BTW I thought I hit the Edit sorry.

looks like another fascinating extension of the sonic universe to me. this new character "shade" seems like something of a tasty enigma! i wonder what kind of animal she is, and more importantly what kind of person. i don't know about you but i haven't enjoyed the recent trend in new sonic the hedgehog characters having loose and "modern" moral values. i won't pre-judge shade, though, she doesn't deserve that. all sonic the hedgehog characters are created equal.

...some more equal than others (knuckles heh)

having this game be an rpg will give us a chance to experience sonic the hedgehog as never before, and that is something which interests me. i wonder how much speed will be a factor in battles and from the looks of it there are still rings to be collected in the field maps. how this is all going to fit together is a question i look forward to answering with a steadfast 6 hour gaming session upon this game's release

I love the old Sonic games that were on the Megadrive(Genesis for my friends in the USofA) they were such awesome fun games I never stopped playing them. But the Sonics ever since the end of the Dreamcast have been absolute shit, I mean Shadow The fucking Hedgehog was SO bad *sigh* If I still had a DS I would definitely check this out.

Approaching with guarded optimism.  I still remember first seeing the art assets for this game in Nintendo Power which gave some hope especially after seeing Secret Rings made for a decent Sonic game.  But the actual game screens are really iffy, but I'm not ready to write it off just yet.

Hmm, it looks different to what I was thinking, but it still looks awesome. This should turn out to be good (it better had do) 'cause Bioware have made probably some of the best rpgs going (NWN and KOTOR especially) and I'll be even more damned if it doesn't turn out good.

I think the HUD is alright at the moment, it's simple, and looks pretty obvious on what each bit is (Although, wtf are FP? Flower points? Naa, can't be... wrong universe) as you have the Vital Stuff, what looks like the turn order (Looks like you have to guess when the enemies attack) and the Commands are pretty obvious too. And w00t! Combat grading, I get to see how much I suck =D

But I wonder how fast paced it will be with the battles being turnbased. And I think, from what it looks like, that the rings either give you a special attack or fully heal you when enough are picked up. 'cause theres a little yellow bar under thehud in the walking screen. Could be entertaining, and I'll definately look into picking it up when it's out, along with the new Castlevania.

I don't believe I've played a single Sonic game since Sonic 3, besides Riders (I couldn't tell what the hell was going on). And based on reviews I'm kinda glad.  This game seems alright, if it's anything like Super Mario RPG then I'll be happy (also, Sonic Unleashed looks decent, hope it's not false hope >_>)

Man 3D graphics look so pathetic on the DS. Also the HUD looks like it was made by a 10 year old in MS Paint.
Even the title of the game puts me off. This isn't even worthy of being on my R4.

Every Sonic game is horrible except maybe 2 of them.

yeah basically what Neophyte said. why is anyone saying WHOA...COULD BE GOOD MAYBE? has anything given you that impression? the screens are ugly, the title even sucks, and basically the Sonic pedigree has been complete shit.

or as Apathy said every company has to have one really shitty game and I'm kind of surprised there wasn't a universal concensus that this will probably be Bioware's!
