So there I am, playing a cool melody by Gabriel era Genesis on my guitar, when all of a sudden, I'm struck by the image of a future too horrible to fathom. Its the year 1999AD, and Lavos has risen from his cavern in the depths of the planet. That's when I realized, I haven't played Chrono Trigger in a long time.

So here's a bit of an appreciation thread of perhaps the greatest SNES RPG ever created (and its sequel, if people want to talk about that mess as well I suppose  :fogetshrug:).

My favorite moment: When you first enter the portal to the post-apocalyptic future and see all the ruins. The music was imo just perfect, so epic sounding. And at that moment, that was one of the few times ever when i felt amazed by a video game. The entire time, up until you reach the station and see the video that shows Lavos coming up, I was so in awe and in suspense. Man that was cool!

Least favorite moment: Saving the princess in the beginning of the game. Kind of an annoying mission, even though it introduced some important characters. Just seemed too long for a non-story mission. (Technically it was part of the story, as its not a side quest, but you know, comparing it to a mission where you collect apples for your mother's apple pie as the first mission so you can learn the controls before the second mission when the big bad final boss attacks your town, giving you motive to kill him as revenge for the rest of the game happens, wouldn't be that far off.)

Coolest move: Chrono's final move, Lumiere. So cool how he floats in the air like that, yeah you go you mute protagonist you! :fogetbackflip:

So yeah, share your favorite/un-favorite parts of the game. Reactions etc. I think I'm gonna replay this game tonight, aw FUCK THIS IS AN AWESOME GAME! SO FUCKING EPIC YEASSWS!

I was going to agree with this topic.

Then you called CC a mess.

Have fun without me, guy. Luminaire does rock.

ps:1999AD is not the future anymore

Chrono Cross was the most awesome game ever for me back then, ranking over FF9 and some other SquareSoft classics that came out then. I litterely spent massive hours on that game, (like I think 200 + hours counting new game plus)

Chrono Trigger was just.... awe inspiring. And as I started to revel some connections in CC from CT (like the epoch in the Viper Manor Basement) it jsut got more and more awesome.

And yeah, the future was the most epic part in CT.

If I put more consideration into this topic, I have to say the place I preferred (and subsequently, my sister preferred(because she loves this too)) was the ice age. Zeal, the Ocean Palace and the Black Omen.

But especially the Ocean Palace.

Even though I do like CT a whole bunch and it does rank in my favorite RPGs, CC is one that I prefer much more. Infact, it was (and may still be I can't focus on my tastes much) my favorite RPG ever. I've beaten it 3-4 times (to hardcore people that isn't much, but to me, that is an insane ammount) and I could probably still pick it up now and go through another spin. I loooooove it.

Oh shit man yeah the ice age was just magical. And I know it was SUPPOSED to be magical, but CT was one of the few games to actually have an atmosphere that reflected what it attempted, in EVERY scene. Black Omen was so cool.

and reason I don't really like CC is because it just seemed so awkward of a game, I could give it another try of course, but sequel seemed kind of unnecesary.

I still have no idea how to feel about Chrono Trigger and this is seriously the only game this has happened with. like, ever since I've played it. it does so much wrong but there are all these elements I really liked in it.

I should elaborate but yeah what a game!

As a sequel it falls flat, because except for a small small few of references until late in the game..

..it has nothing to do with CT. That's why I regard them as pretty different and don't try to make links between them. There are links, but it's mustly just a few nods, for most.

Oh yeah, CC has a ton, ton of atmosphere too. And a god damn beast of a soundtrack.

It's the only soundtrack I heard irl, from outside sources.

I replayed CT at least twenty times, but CC will hold a much more important place in my memory as my favourite rpg.  The battle/level up system, magic system, artwork, soundtrack, everything was done so well that I don't think any other rpg will ever feel the same to me.

Edit: I have a feeling most people that liked CT but hated CC only feel that way because it wasn't a direct sequel, thereby ruining their initial impression and experience, not because CC is a bad game.

Loved CT, but I didn't like CC nearly as much.  CC wasn't a bad game, there's some stuff I really didn't like about, but I did end up getting a bunch of ending anyways, though no where near as many as I did in CT.

I'm also one of the people who prefer CC to CT. Both are great games but to be honest, I never really understood the hype about CT, it didn't really do anything special for me.

Which is my exact feelings.  The game took a safe route and did a lot of mundane generic things (silent protagonist, no customization over character growth, rather bland dungeon design despite the good graphics) but there was so much stuff that was untouched by games at the time that it was pretty revolutionary.  Having the main character die before the end, giving the option to resurrect him, side quests that actually DEVELOP the characters and the world instead of just hand over items, multiple endings, new game+ it's ridiculous.  More polish went into Chrono Trigger than most contemporary RPGs and it's pretty sad that games in comparison seem really really half assed as if this is the peak of RPG talent and then it slowly declines into a sea of convoluted plot lines, long ass dungeons for time filler (looking at you FF12), and too much focus on the fucking fighting and leveling shit up.

To be honest I must say that the only RPG I ever finished gladly (and not just one time, but several) was CT.

To me it had everything that a good game needs: an involving storyline, amazing characters (Frog and Magus are awesome), attractive graphics, interesting fights, etc...
Because, to be honest, it is not a particularly hard game and the overall story is not particularly amazing; but still everything is put together SO well that it makes magic.

There are countless parts which I thought were too good, but I particularly liked when u meet Magus for the first time and you battle him. And then when you are about to defeat it, Lavos comes and ARGHH!!!

I never finished CC because two things about it put me off quite badly:
1) I thought the skills and battle system were kindda dull and pretty random, and I just did not like how there were tons and tons of skills, becuase they kinda lose their identity, but I dunno...
2) I really despised the fact that there were so many characters, because some of them are absolutely random, and don't have an attractive background, and they completely lose their identity; and all that made me think that the developers wanted to make the game very varied, but kindda overlooked those details that made CT such a trademark game (does that make sense?).

Still though, I reckon sooner or later I'll have to get on with it and just finish the game, since so many ppl say is so awesome that I really feel I'm missing out.

When I think about CT I remember all the awesome shit like ice age, frog's story, awesome bosses near the end etc etc but when I play it I get bored as fuck. It takes a shitload of time to really get the game going imo and the future in the beginning sucks ass. But yeah, it's definately worth playing through but I don't see why people would bother playing through it more than once, even though multiple endings. Playing a 2nd time on level 40+ sucks because you're just fighting canonfodder in order to get to some place where you can go feat lavos who you've already defeated so...

I kinda agree with Lars. CT is an absolutely fantastic game but it really loses it's shine on more than one playthrough. It's a bit odd for me because I loved the first playthrough and I do enjoy multiple playthroughs of good games, but it's really never been enjoyable and I've tried a bunch of times.

Also I never understood the CC hate, for a PSOne game it's pretty shit hot.

no way I loved the future stuff. it was so unbelievably dark and unexpected, I almost lolled.............but i was still hungry...

anyways I'm kind of surprised for the love of CC actually. I think most people here are forgetting or didn't play the end of the game. I'll give it two things; the battle system was pretty fucking good (great, actually, probably one of the few where DEFENDING was an option with Barkley Shut Up and Jam being the only other game I think I've done that in) and the graphics were just unfucking believable (when you paused the game and loaded the character window, I swear they did SOMETHING in the menu to make it look like Dreamcast good).

but I mean, ignoring the flaws they chose to drag over, like another silent protagonist, and the incredibly stupidly massive character select (I'M A LUCHADOR what???) that resulted sadly in less character development (raise your hand if you can remember three details about Kid that aren't MAYBE A WILD GIRL), the end of the game was so fucking awful.

ROCK CONCERT FOR DRAGONS

LETS MAKE THE GAME A FUCKING SIDEQUEST FROM CHRONO TRIGGER

FANFICS NOW IRRELEVANT

HERES LAVOS LOL.

man it was a really really fucking awful ending.

Not everyone can  be as well developed as Robo, Ayla and Marle.

And the soundtrack is pretty good.

I never finished it so I imagine that's why I like it! I do want to though, at some point. It never got released in Australia from memory so I'll probably have to slog through it emulated or some shit.
