Blood,
I loved that you played a Sadistic Undead Cowboy.
And the bit where he comes across the body of his wife and yells "SHOW YOURSELF DEMON"
that was pretty powerful stuff back in the day.

Oh god yes Ax Dude. Blood was my favorite Build Engine game (followed by Shadow Warrior, making Duke 3D actually my less favorite build engine game) It's such a blast, but it's so much harder than the other two.

Also, Bravo, I sure do like Wolfenstein. I find myself sucking major ass when I try to replay it now, but when I was REALLY YOUNG (don't ask me why, I was what, 7, 8 or 9 at that time) I fucking RULED at Wolf3D and fucking BEAT IT.

On the subject of DooM's simplicity and great feeling, I guess it doesn't catch on to people these days. One time I tried getting some asian dude in it (he was I think 13-14 at the time and I was 14-15). I grew up with DooM(literally) and so I was pretty used to it, but after a while his comments were just

DUDE WTF? I CAN RUN AT 700MPH AND MY PISTOLS HOLDS 200 BULLETS WITHOUT RELOADING THIS MAKES NO SENSE

WHAT A GAY GAME

So yeah, I think if you didn't fall into the old fps craze when it was still boiling hot, you might have more trouble getting into DooM and the likes. Though, the DooM community was full of 10-11-12-13 year olds a few years back. Terrifyingly full of them, actually.

Golden Eye 007 would have to be my top choice... with Duke Nukem games being a close second.

I can't remember how many days me and my brother and the neighbours would sit around and play Goldeneye 007 after school. Its memories like that that show you which games had the biggest impact on your life.

It has its issues, but as basically the first console multiplayer FPS, it really broke ground.

I didn't think anyone else played Rise of the Triad here. It's the first multiplayer (network) game I've ever played. Good shit... though the ending is kind of disturbing.

I networked two of my PCs with BNC cable just to be able to play Doom and ROTT. Over heeeeere. BEHIND JA!

Descent, if that counts :)

SOME people consider it a "flight simulator", but I too consider it a "no gravity" fps. It's not too different from of Crysis. It was my first truely multiplayer game, and I remember how overwhelmed I felt on a 8 player game on Kali (anyone remember Kali? the place to go for MW2 games online). Descent also had some of the best midi music I've ever heard, right up there with the original doom. And it's sequel's CD audio was some of the best techno-metal to come from a video game.

Wasn't Descent mod music? Or something the like, at least.

Sorta like UT.

My favorite is Thief, which is followed by System Shock.  Both had top-notch atmospheres, and the former definitely had interesting gameplay for me.  There was a definate sense of danger in thief, because your avatar was very weak in the physical sense, so you had to be careful or go the way of the dodo.

I think it went by a bit unnoticed, sadly.

Still, Rise of the Triad and Wolfenstein 3D were my FPS games of choice back in the day. I remember that I didn't really understand network gaming and I used to make a network game and wander around in the levels collecting things in RotT, wondering why there weren't any enemies. Good times! The main game was awesome as well, pretty gory from memory. I wish I could remember the ending but I've totally forgotten.

Wolfenstein was the first I played (shortly before Doom) and I always loved it for whatever reason. The low quality sound samples, collecting Nazi treasure, fighting mecha-Hitler, it was all great. I had Spear of Destiny too (expansion pack) and I think that bumped it up to around 6 episodes, can't remember that well though. Finished all of them which was quite an achievment for me when I was younger. Great game. I've been looking for the GBA port to see if it holds up nowadays but it must've been a tiny release.

Bloodshot aka Battle Frenzy for Sega Genesis was one of the first console FPS games I played and I loved it. From memory it had a 'vs mode' that was actually co-op, but you were in competition to kill more enemies or something. Still, it was one of the first co-op games I'd played and even a few months ago me and a mate had a blast at it for an hour or so. It wasn't a very remarkable game bar the multiplayer, but it was solid enough and I have good memores with it.

Do I really need to tell? I guess I do.

DooM. DooM was for me, is for me and will always be for me.

DooM.

DooM. I don't even care about anything else. DooM. Ok, that's a lie, but still: DooM.

I didnt play Doom until like 1999(2000-01 might be more accurate) or something but I thought it was the shit.
Yay! Random words!

I'm in the Goldeneye/ Duke Nukem boat myself.  Goldeneye 007 primarily because it's single player was great and it's multiplayer even moreso.  That was THE party game throughout my junior high years.  As for Duke Nukem, a friend invited me over to play it way back when and I was pretty hooked.  We always hung out at each other's houses often and one night we had a sleep over and just played the game off and on.  I eventually got the N64 game and we played co-op through that all the time. (at least until Goldeneye came around :P)

I love Doom 2. I still play it all the time online (Thanks to SkullTag). Some other classics I love are Duke Nukem 3D, Goldeneye, and Perfect Dark.
Also, did anyone ever play Damage Incorporated? It's a classic FPS that uses the Marathon 2 engine. I'm pretty sure it was also the first FPS where you played a marine in a modern, realistic setting, with real weapons. It's also really good.

It's just for style as far as I know. Also, DAMN, FINALLY. Somebody says Perfect Dark. Am I the only one who thinks Perfect Dark blows Goldeneye out of the water?

We need to Skulltag someday dethmetal..

If its framerate didn't suck balls it definitely would be leagues ahead of Goldeneye.  At its core I'd certainly say it was better due to all the gameplay modes and actual bots when your pals weren't around, but all of that is shot to hell when the thing is struggling to maintain a playable framerate.  I think the only map where I remember having  a smooth gameplay session is the one at that villa or whatever the stage was with that lodge/house area.

If I am to talk from nostalgia's viewpoint, then it would be a combination of Wolfenstein 3d, Goldeneye/Perfect Dark(basically the same game) and Quake 2.

However having played each of those games again in 2008, the ONLY ONE of the entire list I actually found even remotely playable for more than 5 minutes was Quake 2. All the others have aged so badly and are just really drab and dull. Quake 2 looks pretty bad these days, and it's damn simple, but it's a really good romp and I still find myself occassionally booting it up and running through it from start to finish in one sitting.

Honourable FP's' mentions would be System Shock 2, Thief 1/2 and Unreal 2. The first three are great - even today -  but it's hard to categorise them as classic FPS games, and Unreal 2 is a damn fine game from start to finish, but it's not really worth playing more than once. Except of course spiders + flamethrowers = OH MY GOD GENIUS LEVEL DESIGN YESSSSSS

Perfect Dark is a lot better than Goldeneye. Campaign mode? Perfect Dark has a slightly better campaign. The multiplayer, PD's is much better. Though Goldeneye has some things going for it, I prefer some of the maps in goldeneye more, and it doesn't have the framerate problem.
