I'm not too keen on Russia's situation as of late, but I ask this question to anyone who knows; is Russia really in a position to fuck with us right now? Seriously?

gotta have me some suvs, gotta have me some suvs, gotta have me some suvs.

That’s right, you have the young gaming with the old(er), white people gaming with black people, men and women, Asian countries gaming with the EU, North Americans gaming with South Americans. Much like world sporting events like the Wolrd Cup, or the Olympics will bring together different nations in friendly competition, (note the recent Asian Cup; Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia, no violence there) we come together. The differences being, we are not divided by our nationalities and we do it 24-7, and on a personal level.

We are a community without borders and without colours, the spirit and diversity of the gaming community is one that should be looked up to, a spirit and diversity other groups should strive toward.

Thats a nice chart, seems Russia is not as weak these people seem to claim. I only wish I knew more about Georgia. Georgia is just another country I know nothing about and I never even knew it existed. So far it looks like Russia is to blame but then again I really don't know a thing about this.

I would really like to know more about the history and why they are at war. Anyone know of any sites that have unbiased information about this? It's pretty late and I don't have the time to look around.

I mean, missiles aside, it's only strong compared to other Eastern European countries. You have to consider that their hardware is aged and their forces are poorly trained and poorly supplied. They were mired down in Afghanistan for years while American forces took it over in days. China, India, etc. are probably both far stronger than them at this point.

I think I misunderstood the 'fit for military service' part as being the trained men. I guess it really means physically fit. There are a lot of important factors missing on that chart if you were to use that to compare military strenght.

Yeah but about Merchant Marine strength, I don't know if they're counting MSC/military support ships alone or the entire industry for each nation. If its the whole industry, ours is probably alot lower because most of our stuff is imported/exported from different nations.

And if it is military support, I guaran-fucking-tee you alot of people will start shipping hard if/when we get involved in another war. A bunch of our MSC ships are also docked so that probably plays into that stuff too.

EDIT: oh yeah, if I remember correctly US flagged ships have an obligation to double as military support in times of war so you've got another bunch of tankers, Roll-on-Rolloff, and Bulk carriers that would have to be taken into account too.

this is probably the first time georgia has made national news since it declared its independence before most of GW users were born/watched the news.
Umm Russia and Georgia's constant rows have been making international news for a few years now!

I'm not too concerned about this war. In global scale it's pretty insignificant and should not lead to any big global warring. But IF other countries and military alliancies and organizations hop in this soup things can get ugly.

Luckily Finland has no real natural resources so there's very minimal chance of Mother Russia's gaze turn towards us.

Yeah can't wait for USA to invade some countries bordering Russia since USA would love some of that land around Russia to build bases on.

most of central europe is allied with NATO and none of those countries are oil rich so we don't care!  (i speak for every politician on this subject)

fantastic, now we're getting somewhere!  i can't wait to see the death toll rack up on this one!  casualties in war always seem to be higher in small scale battles since we're talking about a province that's smaller than most north american states.

So yeah I don't want to overshadow them invading Georgia, but Norwegians are generally very concerned about our Russian neighbours and with good reason. Norway's just one of Russia's lucky neighbours that has powerful allies. Fuck Putin. He's a gangster, not a politician.

Heh. The February 2008 Lincoln-Douglas debate resolution was "That Russia has become a threat to United States interest." We were given little packets of evidence (b/c all of us were too goddamn lazy to research it for ourselves) and I have one piece of evidence that says,

Quote
The stepping up of Russia's military activity off the Norwegian coast is not viewed as a threat to Norway, Jonas Gahr Store, the Norwegian foreign minister, told Itar-Tass in the New Year eve interview, summing up the results of the two countries' interaction in the outgoing year. "We notice that Russia has become more active in many directions of late, which reflects the country's economic development, as well as the modernization of Russia's capabilities." Store said. "The year 2007 was the year when Norwegian people began talking of Russia as a military player again," he said. "People are impressed with the present activity of the Russian air force, and with large-scale exercises, also near the Norwegian coasts," the minister said. "I have always commented on this matter in a balanced way, noting that we (Norwegians) do not regard this activity as a threat to Norway." "We realize that Russia modernizes its military potential, also by holding exercises," he added.
--ITAR-TASS World Service, December 24, 2007

Yeh. Pretty goddamn stupid. If only I could have quoted you for last year's debate.

Russia has always been belligerent. In 2005-2006 it cut the gas supply to Ukraine and Belarus, traded military weaponry with Iran (not to mention failing to keep the remnants of its nuclear stockpile guarded, making it easier for TERRORISTS to get them), and had NUCLEAR ARMS MANEUVERS with the chinese (now a big trading buddy). Not to mention there was the idiot-Bush-Anti-ballistic missile system and the whole Russia - pointing - nukes - towards - Europe thing. Anyways, if we (the US) actually get in the middle of Georgia and Russia, Russia could ally with China, Iran, and other US h8rs (North Korea mayhap?) and be a real bitch about things. Like start a WWIII (worst-case scenario).

Even if it doesn't turn out that way (this is very likely, thankfully), they will still hold a grudge against NATO and the United States. Nationalistic tendencies might have face in the Russian political sphere, and that's when parallel lines could be drawn from today's Russia to the Germans before WWII.

EDIT:
As a US American though, this topic is boring me and now I'ma post in the "Sexual Harassment" thread.

Russia has been manipulating this situation for a while now, buttering up the Georgian separatist states and using them to goad Georgia into a foolish action. And Saakashvili played right into their hands on this one, he probably waited for Putin to be in Beijing for the Olympics and thus wouldn't react but I suspect the Russians had been waiting for something like this and were ready.

Anyway the timing is pretty tricky because Georgia was going to be considered for NATO membership soon, and if they're at war with Russia its unlikely they'll get it, though the fact they have an big fat oil pipeline running through their country might help them with that somewhat!

As all wars in this epoch - this conflict is product of two imperialist blocs, in this case the American and the Russian one. Georgia after the rose-revolution aligned itself geopolitically to the american field of influence and showed its interest in uniting with NATO. Americans pumped with money all this ex-soviet republics to assert its geopolitical dominance over them against Russia's wish to assert its hegemony.  The United States has been placing military bases all around the south of Russia, creating a new iron curtain.

This is really a battle between Moscow and the US over the control of the region.

Honestly, like in all wars today, the people who are at lost here are working folk. While bosses and politicians have something to either win or defend from this - whether it is buisnesses, land, or political power, working people  are conscripted as cannion fodder to murder in the interests of their bosses, and the people who are more vulnerable to the bombings are probably poor working folk. i think its very simple to support one flag over the other, because we are taught to think in way of nations. This, both for the georgians and russians is pretty terrible though. although this probably won't happen, i hope workers try to resist and sabotage  the war effort in hopes that they don't get forced to murder or get murdered.

I dunno, I think considering the massive improvements Georgia has made since it elected a free democratic leader and how terrible almost everything about life in Russia is, it's pretty clear who are the good and bad guys here (even if it is terrible that they are actually at war).
