I've seen a shitload of movies, but at the same time I haven't seen all the "basic shit". I only saw the Godfather trilogy and goodfellas a week ago. I've never seen Casablance and all that. I have a hard time getting into oldies because of the film grain but I loved The Apartment, Citizen Kane, whatever. However I couldn't watch (Orson Welles super version) of Touch of Evil or North by Northwest.

Whatever - just tell me what I'm supposed to see and I'll watch it. This applies to all movies from all periods and genres.

I've never seen any of those movies, ever.

but I suggest you watch stay and bringing the dead

they're both mindfuck movies, although stay is more of a mindfuck/mystery I guess

EDIT: don't read the entire plot summary on stay because that will pretty much ruin the movie, it came out in 2005 and its got Ewan McGregor in it.

Quote
The movie opens with a car crash on Brooklyn Bridge, and introduces Henry Letham (Ryan Gosling), apparently a survivor of the crash, sitting next to a burning car on the bridge.

Psychiatrist Sam Foster (Ewan McGregor) and his girlfriend Lila (Naomi Watts) are then introduced in a new scene. Sam discusses his patient, Henry, a college student and aspiring artist whom he describes as depressed and paranoid. Sometimes Henry hears voices, and he seems able to predict future events. Henry has told Sam that he will kill himself that Saturday at midnight, which Sam finds very troubling. Lila, an art teacher who has survived a past suicide attempt, offers to help to dissuade Henry from killing himself. But first they must find Henry.

It's also got alot of subtle connections to Shakespeare's Hamlet too, which is pretty interesting

never seen stay but bringing out the dead was directed by Martin Scorsese (who did like taxi driver and The Departed all of which are very good)

yeah it's very unclear but I'm going to assume its more geared towards masterpieces because you can't just make a topic saying "TELL ME ALL THE GOOD MOVIES EVER"

Shit anyone who knows shit about movies will assume you've seen. Y'know like 2001, Da Godfather, Goo Bad n' Uglee. I seen all dat shit but y'know i be lookin 4 dat n maybe y'know shit like there will be blood n' dark city that have had really critical acclaim. Really I dunno what i'm askin just shit i am supposed to have seen. I mean I already saw a shitload but you know there are still a shitload i havwne't seen.

exampelz:
I remember one time in school a kid who knows jack shit about movies was asking people if they saw Schindler's List, because apparently none of my shitty peers have seen it. He asked me and I said to myself "fuck". I saw it right after.

One time someone asked me if I say Braveheart. I said "fuck".

not saying this is a bad topic but instead of asking us there is probably like

a LIST somewhere (or several lists) of some of the more significant movies of the 20th century, and that'd probably be a pretty good place to start if you are looking for movies that are sort of like fundamental for anyone who is really into film, like the godfather and full metal jacket and whatever else.

yea a list would be tight but you know there is no way netflix can send me every movie on the TOP 1001 ESSENTIAL MOVIES LIST at a rate of 3 dvd's per week.

One time I watched movies off a top 10 list, that took me like 2 months.

I took it as, "suggest me a good movie" which is what I did.

watch those movies faggot

seriously though I really doubt I've seen many "classic" movies so I'm just going to make suggestions of movies that I can remember really liking.

so wait what do you want, then?  i mean if ten movies took you two months to watch, this topic will take you quite a bit longer, probably!  i mean i can watch like 2-3 movies a day if i get really IN THE MOOD so i'm not sure what you're going for here if you're not actually in the mood to watch them.

No I am in the mood it's just that it's better for me to take recommendations in ABSOLUTELY MUST SEE first instead of nitpicking over 1001 movies. Also top 10 movies took me a long time because of netflix but I will try to download everything and all. I can watch up to 8 movies day so. Cept it takes forever to download movies off the zoo thanks to server change.

go to afi.com and look for the top 100 movies list.  that's pretty good for MAINSTAYS OF FILM or whatever, regardless of your opinion of the list itself

oh i see.  yeah netflix is bad for that kind of thing in a hurry, i think.  i would just torrent them all if i were you!  also roman's suggestion is probably good.  i was trying to think of a reputable place you could get a LIST of essentials and afi didn't even occur to me.

Here, look these movies up:

La Dolce Vita (Frederico Fellini)
L'avventura (Michelangelo Antonioni)
Breathless (Jean-Luc Godard)

Also I'm not really sure if this would be considered a MAINSTAY OF FOREIGN FILM but go watch Il Posto, that one's really good.

edit: also Bicycle Thieves.

Ok I will, except like

Isn't Mad Max not on the AFI list. I haven't seen that yet. Neither is fucking Back to the Future which I haven't seen either.

Check out the nomination lists, not the final lists. The nomination lists have shitloads of movies. Of course they'll be all elitist and have like Citizen Kane on every final list but the nomination lists are decent. They're available on www.afi.org as well.

If you're looking for a list that would have Mad Max and stuff, check out the 100 Thrills and the 400 nominations for 100 Thrills among the AFI lists.
