Well I bought this and I like it so far! It's a pretty creepy game and wastes no time throwing you into stuff.
It's pretty close quarters combat from what I've experienced so far, so if you don't act fast then it's pretty much "I'm fucked" so yeah. Also, the enemies move fast and are pretty smart. I shot ones legs off and it crawled after me with it's weird long claw arm things. Furthermore, the dismember things makes it harder because it's actually pretty challenging to shoot when they move so fast, and not all of the enemies will have their legs blown off so you aim for the arms & head really.
Here I thought that the cutter they talked about and the dismembering was a melee weapon thing, but the cutter is a plasma gun so go figure. It's still challenging like I said.
Likewise, this game is creepy as fuck. I've jumped twice. It's mostly because it establishes a great atmosphere. Sure, it's the desolate spaceship with shit, but for some reason this game does it better. The graphics are pretty (as far as you can say "pretty"), but the audio is where this game really shines. All the reviews say it's pretty much perfect audio and I agree. You hear everything, from the very tiny noises of monsters crawling in vents, to the big explosions. It creates the atmosphere so well I'm actually afraid to keep moving on in the game.
There was one part where I saw a shadow done the hall, and I rounded the corner. Here was a monster on the ground, but it really did look dead. I take a stop forward and it jumps on me, and I go FUCK really loud. Maybe it's just me, but the atmosphere seems a lot better even though some of the tricks (i.e. the fake dead monster) are old school.
To add to the atmosphere and immersion, there's no HUD. The only menu is when you pause the game (continue - options - quit). Everything else is projected in front of you, from video messages, to your inventory, to the map. It's all projected in a hologram in front of you, meaning you're in danger of being attacked when you scroll through your inventory. As far as health, you look at the blue tubing on your character's RIG (their space suit) spine, it decreases with damage. And to see ammo, you raise your gun and look at the ammo on the back of the gun.
It's just an overall really good idea so far. I'm not far in but the way they've done things is rather cool, so I'm hoping everything keeps ramping up and getting better.
I'm in love with it so far.
:EDIT:
Also I just found a medical person. She gave me something then died. I stomped on her and her leg broke off. Holy shit. So did everything else. I wasn't expecting that!
:EDIT 2 WHAT THE FUCK:
I just got attacked by babies. I'm in a lab and there's baby fetuses in this green shit...and a fucking deformed baby with like tentacles just attacked meaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggghhhhh
