Some of the easier combos are the one where you fight the Walking Tombstone, and where you fight the Rock Lizards, those ones were easy, I almost had the combo when hitting the Oh-So-Snake. I had 10 hits, that's as far as I got with that one.

Actually he (Itoi, the guy in the interview, the one who created Giyig/Giegue/Giygas... among other things for the series) only got the dialogue from the Giygas battle from the rape scene. Specifically the "It hurts" then "It feels so good"/ "I'm so happy" and the furious repitition of the main character's name. The surreal scene was also supposed to depict the confusion he had upon watching it. As for how it looks like and it's name... I'm not so sure. In it's original form of Giygas in Mother was pretty much an alpha version of Mewtwo... looks, story, and all. Literally, the influence Mother had on Pokemon apparently being acceptable because of the fact that the developers of Mother 1 and 2, Ape Inc, which is what we now know as Creature's Inc, had a hand in developing Pokemon to begin with (the current president of Creatures Inc being one of the key musicians of the Mother series).

Also, Giegue/Giygas (in Mother 1) definitely is the inspiration for MewTwo. I mean, they're pretty similiar, and I recall from watching the series as a kid MewTwo was even in a bubble-ey thing like that.

Yeah the entire series is pretty creepy in a light-hearted way.  Even though 90% of the NES game didn't have a narrative, the last thirty minutes of plot ended up being a really touching love story.

And Nintendo doesn't care.

I've never noticed the whole sexual connection to Giygas in Earthbound (i.e. KBJGXLM's post), thought I did hear that Giygas' dialogue was taken from some sort of porno...

It could probably be related to Giygas considering his adopted parents "abandoned" him destroying his sanity and he was raised with a burning hatred for all humans which was satiated by singing him a lullaby the main character's grandparents sang to him as a child.

To those of you who are in chapter 2... I suggest using the Hypno Pendulum and paying attention to the beat structures on different songs to find out how the game treats the beat in regards to the combo system. With a little practice I'm already up to 12 hits on familiar songs without the pendulum. It's not as easy as it sounds though... since songs change tempo... some of them changing constantly making it tough to keep up with.

:edit1: Heh. Odds are if you are in chapter 2 you would have already came across the ants explaining this anyways. Here's to the time I spent trying to figure the combos out.

:edit2: Once you get the "battle memory" item practicing this will be a lot easier. You just demo previously fought monsters, put them to sleep to hear their heart beat, and kick away to your heart's content. They don't fight back and they don't die. You just exit the demo once you're done.

As for starting the combo, the only thing you need to do is wait for the message saying "[this ][/this] attacks" and keep track of the beat.. tapping the A button to the rythm from there.

Most I got was 11 on the Chapter 1 boss. Otherwise, sometimes I get it right, oftentimes I don't.

But man, this game has pretty depressing undertones. I'm at chapter 4 now.

Those fetus and vaginal theories are way out there. With how much distorting there is in the final battle in Earthbound, the only thing that really shows is the head. To me it's just people's brain finding hidden images in the background. The cave leading to his lair is the most ridiculous theory I've heard.
Also that theory came from 4chan, anything is possible there.

The movie Itoi saw wasn't a porno(or an actual rape), either. But obviously the movie wasn't meant for kids.

The "beat" doesn't start until you make your first attack.  You'll notice when you attack you have to advance the text before you actually hit.  The sound it makes when you hit is when the beat starts.  After that you have to press the button to each beat of the percussion meaning full notes and quarter notes as well.  It's actually harder on slow songs.

how neccessary is comboing? I am terrible at stuff like that and it would suck if later battles REQUIRED like 5-6 hit combos to beat.
