Yeah, it's definitely intentionally funny. It's got Raimi's brand of campy horror/comedy all over it.
I wouldn't be too worried, Psyburn, it's much more tongue-in-cheek than the first Evil Dead. It's more on par with the second one (though not quite as goofy as Army of Darkness), but it's not really that "scary" of a movie. It's got tons of great jump scares, but the appeal really lies in the surprisingly well-done characters and undercurrent of comedy. The end is the only part that I'd classify as actually "scary", but even it's more of a mixture of disturbing and really really really macabre comedy.
Also, Coxswain, Raimi definitely didn't direct The Messengers. Also, I've always felt Spider-Man 3 got a tough break, but that's not really the point.
But yeah, if you're an Evil Dead fan or just a Raimi fan in general, then don't pass up Drag Me to Hell. It's hilarious and awesome (and even further solidifies my thought that Justin Long is a good actor and my failure to understand why people dislike him so much).
