yeah uh i barely remember the movie but i dont think it was supposed to be literal language barriers at all.  more like communication in general??  iirc the guy didnt communicate with his wife, the deaf girl felt really isolated and... were there other people?  besides the maid and the little kids.  idk

evidently there's a scene where this is pretty much said on a TV that i missed (i went to the kitchen to get some pizza). i thought her being alive was just an effect of the time difference.
SPOILER FOR EVERYONE THAT HASN'T SEEN THIS: EVERYONE IN THE MOVIE EITHER LIVES OR DIES.

there didn't seem to be any consistency with anything though! the barriers the people faced were fairly different and sometimes not even the same in the same story and this made any theme messy at best. "sometimes people have trouble communicating but mostly it's pretty easy"

did you guys like the movie?

I watched Synecdoche, New York. Its a pretty incredible film, which will take a lot of time and rewatches to fully disect the many layers of the movie. Unfortunately it leaves you in a very depressed state and it will probably be a long time before I want to rewatch it, becuase I'm in pretty good spirit at the moment heh. That aside, I couldn't help but think of David Lynch when watching it. There are some definite character switches and surreal perspectives in the movie. Some are obvious , whilst I think that some are pretty hidden. like

I dunno, that could all be wrong, but it leaves you thinking

Angels & Demons

7/10

Okay, so, it kind of didn't make a whole lot of sense, but it was pretty and I was entertained. So there. It was also really well-acted too, despite the fact that the plot and dialouge look somewhat silly on paper.

not particularly but i didnt mind it.  tbh i barely form opinions on most movies unless theyre really offensively bad or really good.  i dont even remember the movie much but i know i watched it which meant that i sat in place for 90+ minutes being moderately entertained.  i kind of zone out and just absorb without much judgment most of the time.  i'm just not too critical unless if it's not TRANSFORMERS or something.  it does seem like you missed the point a bit, tho

it's like two and a half hours and i couldn't find anything redeemable about it. the characters were all unlikeable, the plot was almost narrated, and aside from the goofy 6 degrees of seperation the theme of BABEL was really disjointed at best.

it was fairly slow paced and it felt like the reason was so you could admire how clever the film was, but it's really not a clever film.

sunshine cleaning

thought it was alright, but the devices they use to make you sad are obvious and pretty awful.
it really reeks of indie filmmaking and like always maybe one or two things actually happen in the movie, and the rest is character interaction.

I've been to the movies recently, and I've seen a couple of films that have gotten a lot of attention on the forums. So, instead of re-hashing stuff that has already been said, I'm going to touch on a movie that hasn't gotten nearly as much attention.

State of Play stars Mr. Jennifer Garner as a US senator who has done some mighty stupid things with his life. Enter Russell Crowe as a hefty, long-haired reporter guy and Rachel McAdams as his spunky-yet-smart sidekick who work for the Washington Globe, working on stories that somehow wind up connecting back to the congressman, his sexy bed buddy, a hilariously sad (and I mean that as a compliment) Jason Bateman, and a pizza delivery guy. If it wasn't for Helen Mirren's British bitch boss, I think the movie would have come apart at the seams.

It was your typical thriller with twists and turns and antics galore. I wouldn't call it 'predictable' per say, but I wouldn't call it 'thrilling' either. It was just MEH. Decent acting made it worth watching, but I couldn't get nearly as passionate about a newspaper story as the characters seemed to. Granted, the story was supposed to be the biggest thing to happen in Washington D.C. since the War of 1812, but still...

When you go see a thriller type movie, you kind of have to pay attention to the story in order to get the full experience out of the movie. It was in paying attention to what was being presented that messed up the end of the movie for me, which is probably why I didn't enjoy the film nearly as much as I could have. I won't spoil it per say, but if you're going to see this movie, take a hint: pay attention to the fluff piece photo.

This movie wasn't worth the trip to the theatre, but if you're a thriller junkie or you just have a thing for Mr. Garner (who is, by the way, getting better looking with age), catch this one on DVD.
Check it out! I'm doing NaNoWriMo this year!

I saw it too Mamamack, and I hated it.

They spent the entire movie creating this huge elaborate story that only Russel Crowe could figure out,  (Rachel McAdams turned out to be completely irrelevant to the entire movie), and then the twist turns out to be that what really happened was the most simple idea given at the beginning of the movie. Bullshit. I was also pretty upset because I'm a big fan of Jeff Daniels and he has such promise most of the movie, until finally he is just written out for some reason.

I watched Synecdoche, New York.

I wanted to see it when I first heard about it but no theaters here played it. Glad to hear it was interesting though.

this- i am still kind of embarassed that i teared up when the main girl sat on the porch with the old lady! it was sad, but was totally a low blow and had little relevance to the rest of the movie!

no it wasn't??? i was actually kind of surprised at the ending, and the plot twist was really well done and wasn't some stupid m night shyamalan gimmick. state of play ruled

Dude none of the movie mattered at all!

Jeff Daniels, you lied when you said you knew the victims parents, but you apparently did it for... NO REASON AT ALL. This really bums me out! Jeff Daniels deserves to be the bad guy! Even if he was working with that hitman company, it did nothing at all, because the girl's death was random and meaningless to anyone but that fanatic.
With the final story they put together, the victim is killed by the people she was working for as a spy because she threatened to blow the cover when she fell in love with the senator. Well, last 5 minutes of the movie, she apparently wasn't killed by them. Instead she was killed by an old high army buddy who was a friend of the senator's that was shown in a photo in the first 20 minutes of the movie.

That was stupid as hell and it threw away everything they put together in the movie!

I just watched inland empire and I have to say that I did not like it at all.

It was very confusing and scattered all about. I get thats probably the desired effect but still it wasn't good at all imo.

yeah i had a big rant about that a while ago because someone said they liked 'eastern promises' and i had the titles confused.

actually just looked it up:

it's an ugly movie! and aside from that it's pretty dumb. i have a feeling lynch films don't mean anything, they're more about creating an atmosphere or invoking emotion or whatever and so they have these stupid plots and fun little dream sequences.

oh hey know what this part? this part is weird because it's a dream. remember how this was cool when you saw it in rugrats? yeah me too!

there's a few things that instantly make me think less of a movie: contrived nudity and dream sequences.

but did you just feel ill watching the movie? just the look of it? i watched it a while ago but the scene where they introduce the russian woman made me vomit. there's something about the look of the film that's really grotesque

Nah that didn't really bother me, or the nudity either.

I actually like the way some of it was shot in order to give you a creepy feeling but they fell really short of achieving that because the camera used was pretty shitty and wow opaque facial closeup gets pretty old after the first goddamn time.

What I didn't like was that the plot was so spaced out and its like he just decided "fuck it" midway through and just put in dream sequence after dream sequence. "Oh, scratch that. Lets make these dream sequences and then go back and wrap it all up with:

it was fucking stupid, the plot was impossible to follow and even then the cinematography and everything else was fucking boring as hell. OH WOW SHES DREAMING ABOUT DANCING GIRLS THAT FLASHY TITTY ONCE IN AWHILE, who the fuck dreams about shit like that.

So what this movie had a fucked up scrambled plot meant to give you a headache and boring handy cam looking shit to boot. So it wasn't fun to watch or fun to look at.
