that breeze you feel? its me backpedaling. see either I'm a dick who purposefully led strangeluv on and now I'm trying to poke you in the side and wink heh we tricked that fuckin browny into thinking a movie was Juno 2 despite this being the worlds least funny joke or I'm a dick who thinks all indie movies are juno 2 and am now trying to act like i was playing. it doesn't matter to me anyways, to me a movie's quality is dependent on how many squinty eyed china women are in it. well see ya guys, post ya later.

The Oscar shortlist usually follows a specific formula. I don't even know if they know it. Let's go back ten years:

1. Blockbuster/People's Choice (the "we see popular movies too!" slot)
2. Biopic/Period Piece/Literary Adaptation (the "big budget sprawling epic" or "here is the movie about the life of a great guy" slot)
3. Indie Sleeper Hit/Critics' Darling/Musical (the "we recognize the little guys" slot)
4. Gritty/Quirky/Sappy/Foreign (the "we have variety" slot)
5. Emotional Powerpunch/Political Drama (the "controversy" or "heartbreak" slot)

See how formulaic it is? And though it's super early, this is how I think it's going to go for the next one:

Blockbuster - The Dark Knight
Period Piece - Revolutionary Road
Indie Hit/Critics - Rachel Getting Married
Sappy/Quirky/Foreign - Slumdog Millionaire
Politics - Milk

Maybe I should start betting money on this shit from now on.

Damn I was wrong.

My formula still somewhat works though:

Blockbuster - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Period Piece - The Reader
Indie Hit/Critics - Milk
Sappy/Quirky/Foreign - Slumdog Millionaire
Politics - Frost/Nixon

I agree about the Reader that shit is stupid, but I TDK got 8 nominations! Why do they need more? People act like Christopher Nolan has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING unless he gets best director.

The only ones I think should win are
Iron Man in visual effects (Ben Button was pretty bad, and I'm not sure why TDK is nominated?),
Mickey Rourke for lead actor,
Heath ledger for supporting,
and man on wire for documentary

It's kinda odd that grampas would nominate Robert Downey Jr for Tropic Thunder but snub TDK.

Benjamin Button shouldn't be up there either. For the tech awards yeah, and probably Pitt and Henson. Even up to the Director award. But Picture and Screenplay, man?

They could've swapped Reader and BB for Wall E and TDK. But meh, that's Oscars for ya. It's cool Michael Shannon got some recognition. Hopefully this'll throw him more into the light. For a little while at least.

what the fuck.

dude I don't think you got panda's point when he said "why do you care about this."

it's not about "heh list rolleyes" but the fact that the oscars are pretty goddam meaningless. in a year when the maltese falcon and citizen kane came out, HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY won best picture (falcon was not even nominated I think). crash won because lionsgate actually sent every member of SAG a copy of crash. JUNO. TROPIC THUNDER.

and then you're arguing about THE DARK KNIGHT like it was anything other than a pretty decent movie based on comic books or Wall-E like it's not just a good kid's movie.

I will say The Reader should not be there, but only because The Wrestler should. who gives a shit about Wall-E or TDK which pulled in fuckloads of money (TDK second highest grossing film of all time they don't need any other honors). if you're going to argue for a point to the Oscars it's to add a spotlight to movies that might otherwise be ignored and guesssss what they don't even do that so whatever.

From everyone I've talked to that's seen it, it's supposed to be really good.  I'm going to try and see it this weekend, especially now that Rourke is going to wrestle Chris Jericho at WrestleMania.

The wrestler was pretty good I thought, not best picture material imo, but performance wise it was stellar.

Nah I just expected TDK to show up somewhere other than Ledger and tech awards. The Best Pic snub wouldn't have really mattered if Nolan got nominated. Daldry has made 3 movies and has 3 Best Director nominations so far, for Reader, The Hours and Billy Elliot. The Hours was pretty dull, I thought. But I enjoyed Billy Elliot. BUT this is assuming that Daldry was 5th spot and nobody knows if he was. And yeah, I haven't seen The Reader so I shouldn't say anything about it until I do.

Glad In Bruges got a screenplay nomination. Terrific movie.

* Sean Penn in “Milk” (Focus Features)

* Robert Downey Jr. in “Tropic Thunder” (DreamWorks, Distributed by DreamWorks/Paramount)
RDJ didn't go retard at all...

but Sean Penn went full f*ggot... so he won't win

never go full f*ggot...

Ask Jake Gyllenhaal, 2005, Brokeback Mountain.. went full f*ggot.. went home empty-handed.

The only nominations I agree with are David Fincher for best director just because he's made my favorite movie(Fight Club) but since I haven't seen Benjamin Button I wont say too much.

Good show so far... Nice set and more down to a personal level than previously.

Ben Stiller's spoof on Joaquin Phoenix was hilarious. Oh yeah, Ledger won the Oscar.
