i agree that most lyrics blow and that the ones you cite arent good (fuck muse btw muse blows) buuuuuuuut some of these are flawed comparisons

you compare whoever to elliott smith like BREVITY means the same thing in regards to lyricism as it does in fiction  repetition can serve a very important purpose, and it's kind of missing purpose if you're saying ALKHGERLKH GET TO THE POINT ALREADY, POETRY!!!  there are extremes, but that one you posted is not one of them because the FORMATTING is what makes it longer than smith's, not the actual length; it's only like ten more words.  and even if it was longer, there is nothing wrong with devoting an entire song to a theme.  i don't know what else you expect them to do!  cover as many issues in a single song as possible?  honestly of the myriad omplaints you could make about the lyrical ability of most bands, i think this is perhaps the least legitimate.

no my point is this song hits its point and harps on it constantly. there's no progression of ideas here. its just YOUR YOUNG...APPRECIATE LIFE. it's like those country songs that aren't about stories, where it's all based on this theme and you are all AH...THIS IS WHAT IT MEANS. it's not about issues but depth. like smith talking about how young kids have false hopes of security, he ties in imagery of drug abuse, SELLING OUT, there's more to it than "hey kid you growin up much too fast, lemme tell you this six times"

Quote
you also cannot really tie some of these songs together.  aside from PERTAINS TO ATHEISM and a difference in quality, those songs have nothing to do with each other.  they're about radically different subjects.  on this note i think this is actually something a misrepresentation on your part, and i wish you would not present points in such skewed manners, because ATHEIST...WHAT IF U DIE is a gross oversimplification and there was only a single noteworthy line in that pac verse, yet you sold it like someone was paying you too.  i think the muse song is poorly written, but the idea is not hilarious at all.  i think it is sort of funny that in spite of how arrogant the average atheist you meet is, they probably end up having a rougher time of it for their choices.  i think the point is YOU DIE AND THATS IT and that at least if you are religious you get the benefit of never actually having to confront your own mortality.  i am 100% atheist, and it is a lot more weight placed on you in terms of understanding that you are a FINITE BEING or whatever.  it's not about what happens when you die it is about NOTHING HAPPENS and this is a horrifying concept for many people.  CONTEMPLATING MORTALITY how is this "hilarious" exactly???  theyre def not good lyrics tho

my point in the pac comparison was lyrics can also be CLEVER/WITTY which these were not. there's no flow or little HEH BLACK PRIDE or anything about it it's just GUESS WAT...YOU GONNA DIE? WHATS TEHRE. it was less about the themes and more that there are really two ways good lyrics can go, they can be vivid/clever in some way like tupac and most rappers do (and some good song writers too, like the mountain goats) or they can be deep like smith and co go. like we can split hairs on this if you want but I think that's what really defines the best lyrics, a sense of depth or a sense of wit.

also really theyre not good lyricists but this is not a good argument.  posting SNIPPETS out of context proves approximately..........nothing???  like it is not supporting your claim in any way other than FAGGOT MUSIC REVIEWERS POTENTIALLY AGREE and who gives a shit.  you could find music reviewers who say it is amazing.  it doesn't mean anything!

ps check it:whoa....elliott smith worst lyricist of all time....

two lines isn't the same as whole songs man. and dude it's the AV Club, first off I gotta disagree about faggot music reviewers, those guys are the exact opposite, they are the best. my point is this isn't just me, it's like...common knowledge. Muse doesn't write good lyrics. there's no good way to establish this outside of quotes and quoting their songs man, unless you can think of one. if so feel free because I don't think these guys will listen to me say THEY JUST SUCK HOW DONT YOU GET THIS.

man you are a protogw listener but...i sense a doubt in you. the problem is you aint giving us NON GW GUYS (if you dont get this btw it is when someone can list porcupine tree + 20 bands that sound like variations on porcupine tree or basically a specific subset of DS's music) much to go on. here we go:
.

singing the same way all the time? I don't even get this man. like you aren't going to run into many groups that will have a vocalist switch between Tom Waits and Anthony Kiedis and similarly other than like Jack Johnson you wont see singers just all sounding the same (compare King's Crossing to St. Ides Heaven).
What I mean is that I like to see musical development with singers. For example, The Butterfly Effect's singer developed his voice from 'Begins Here' to 'Imago' to something that sounded much better. His lyrics are still pretty horrible, though, and their sound hasn't really changed at all between their newest two albums.

you need to be more specific than MUSIC THATS NOT BORING WITH SINGERS AND LYRICS.
Alright, then. I can't really come up with specific concepts that I like in my music off the top of my head, so I'll tell you what I like about certain bands and see if that helps.

Queens of the Stone Age

The main thing I like about these guys is that a lot of their stuff is pretty simple but still sounds really good. Generally, their songs are well formulated, it sounds like everyone in the band knows their place and fits in with what the others are doing (this isn't a great explanation, but I can't think of how better to say this right now).

Coheed and Cambria/The Mars Volta (pre-Amputechture)

I pretty much these two for the same reasons, so I'll lump them in together. Both bands make pretty good concept albums and sound pretty epic. I like the Mars Volta for their cool instrumental sections and because the vocalist uses some interesting vocal effects in appropriate places. Honestly, I really like Coheed's guitarist, everything else is kinda ok. Their drummer(s) are pretty interesting sometimes.

This isn't nearly as explanatory as what I'd like it to be, but what I really like in a band is if they have a cohesive sound. I can't really say I enjoy hip-hop or rap; all of it that I've heard doesn't really sit with me well. If anyone really thinks that they can recommend me some good examples of the genres, though, I'll listen to it. I'm not completely against any style of music.

I pushed her on the gurney
on the way to bush and kearney
we cranked some rush and journey
my flank was flushed and burning
my puss stank with yearning

do you like the QOTSA singer? Mark Lanegan has some good solo albums out.

I always try and steer neoprog fans to the good older prog (its hard because while there is some most older prog fans will recommend Rush and ELP in the same breath as Genesis and King Crimson) but yeah pick up Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. at the least you'll have what's considered a classic album and an opinion on it.

never listened to Peter Gabriel's solo stuff. i've heard like SLEDGEHAMMER obviously but other than that nada. i've heard quite a bit by Genesis:

Nursery Cryme
Foxtrot
Selling England By the Pound
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

i just get the impression of Peter Gabriel prancing around with a fox mask on singing about some english fairy tale whenever i listen to them. i found it to be pretty generic cheesy prog tbh.

hahah has this topic even served its original purpose? patient #14, have you discovered anything new that you like?

also, pidgeotto, i don't think i'll be able to convince you to like muse's lyrics, just like i don't think you could convince me to like tupac's lyrics (too high of a fuck to no-fuck ratio). i guess it's all a matter of personal opinion, that's why even shittier lyrics are used in songs that are extremely popular.

edit: ^ that made me laugh  :fogetlaugh:

no way is this legit.

how about this song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qZr1uHiwsY

or TOO DRUNK TO FUCK or SONGS ABOUT FUCKING or F.O.A.D. or QUANTUM FUCKING or bands like Holy Fuck or Fuck Buttons or Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Motherfucker=Redeemer (good job me pulling all these from memory) or numerous bands that *gasp* swear. come on you aren't a 60 year old gramma who stubs her toe and says OHHHH SUGAR!, you can't really expect me to believe swearing makes lyrics unlikeable.

you can say TOO AGGRESSIVE maybe (I'd still have a problem with that though) but swearing, really?

no he frickin aint

yeah catamites brought him up in some topic a while ago and I've been posting the vid for Waiting Round to Die forever and a half, I should hope someone would be like "LEMME CHECK DAT OUT". my friend saw this vid and was like "I need everything this guy has done ever" check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTGKzWDakK8
