man you are a protogw listener but...i sense a doubt in you. the problem is you aint giving us NON GW GUYS (if you dont get this btw it is when someone can list porcupine tree + 20 bands that sound like variations on porcupine tree or basically a specific subset of DS's music) much to go on. here we go:
.
singing the same way all the time? I don't even get this man. like you aren't going to run into many groups that will have a vocalist switch between Tom Waits and Anthony Kiedis and similarly other than like Jack Johnson you wont see singers just all sounding the same (compare King's Crossing to St. Ides Heaven).
What I mean is that I like to see musical development with singers. For example, The Butterfly Effect's singer developed his voice from 'Begins Here' to 'Imago' to something that sounded much better. His lyrics are still pretty horrible, though, and their sound hasn't really changed at all between their newest two albums.
you need to be more specific than MUSIC THATS NOT BORING WITH SINGERS AND LYRICS.
Alright, then. I can't really come up with specific concepts that I like in my music off the top of my head, so I'll tell you what I like about certain bands and see if that helps.
Queens of the Stone Age
The main thing I like about these guys is that a lot of their stuff is pretty simple but still sounds really good. Generally, their songs are well formulated, it sounds like everyone in the band knows their place and fits in with what the others are doing (this isn't a great explanation, but I can't think of how better to say this right now).
Coheed and Cambria/The Mars Volta (pre-Amputechture)
I pretty much these two for the same reasons, so I'll lump them in together. Both bands make pretty good concept albums and sound pretty epic. I like the Mars Volta for their cool instrumental sections and because the vocalist uses some interesting vocal effects in appropriate places. Honestly, I really like Coheed's guitarist, everything else is kinda ok. Their drummer(s) are pretty interesting sometimes.
This isn't nearly as explanatory as what I'd like it to be, but what I really like in a band is if they have a cohesive sound. I can't really say I enjoy hip-hop or rap; all of it that I've heard doesn't really sit with me well. If anyone really thinks that they can recommend me some good examples of the genres, though, I'll listen to it. I'm not completely against any style of music.
