these are like the weirdest things to be worried about for the most part.  can't you just ask your parents how to use a washing machine?

edit:  Is it just me?  I think this is a pretty bizarre topic.  Why is "what video game consoles should I bring" under British only???

-your school or another should have a checklist
-varies from school to school but if you're not horrible at transitions and making friends and picking a school that you won't hate it should be good
-why it is fantastic
-the normal ones?? health, social, academic, familial ones
-there are probably instructions on the machines. you put in the clothes, you put the detergent in the slot for detergent, and then you pick a cycle. before this you might need to put money in.

hope this helps :)

Clothing brands! You're an university student. You're supposed to be too poor to buy branded clothing.

I know these questions are weird but they're the last on my list and well you can't really ask parents about any of these (Except the washing machine). Here's why Im asking.

Could you start listing what I'll need to live at University? - Have to start buying stuff in the summer
What's it like - Basically what to expect
What's the Games Development Course like - It's the course Im taking
What problems should I expect - I need to know in advance to be readt
How do I use a Washing Machine? - I may only come home once a month. Meaning I'll need to know how to clean my own clothes. Dunno how yet.

Who stays at University 24/7 - I may only go home once a month.
What clothing brands are common - Have to start buying stuff in the summer so I'll need to save up.
What games consoles should I take - Want to know which ones are popular to uni students.
Do you think I should get a TV+Lisence? - Crucial. Could save me £100.

crumply - Catered's not an option.
shadow kirby - Getting £100 soon. Wonder where that'll go??
DietCoke - I don't drink.
esiann - Thanks for the thing about the washing machine.
mark - My mum would take control. She would make me come home every week. HELL NO!

The very very best advice I could give you would be to do normal computer science not fucking game maker course if you want to get anywhere in the industry. All those courses basically have a shared first year at most universities though so you can think about that later

Don't buy a tv licence because even if none of your friends have a tv you can watch the one good thing a week on you can just use a tv anyway. If they think you're using an unlicenced tv they still can't bust in and catch you watching jeremy kyle red handed, they just come to the door and ask. You tell them you just sent the form off 2 days ago nwo go away cause you're trying to watch jeremy kyle *slam door*

"What clothing brands are common" this question too dumb to get an answer but EVERY KIND OF PEOPLES are going to university, you don't gotta wear nike air max to fit in heh, just wear the clothes you like

Man this is EXCELLENT advice.  If you want a job with a game making company they typically require you already have several years worth of experience, and a straight up CS job is a good way to get that experience.  The game making industry isn't one you can just waltz into.  Do straight up CS, if you can take a game making COURSE or two but don't do just game making.  If you want to focus specifically on graphics or something try taking classes in those things, but don't push your whole university career into game design.

1. okay, first of all, you will need to learn how to buy food CHEAP. seriously, this is the fundamental thing. buying food cheap and eating well to avoid freshers flu and other diseases thrown at you. second, you will need pans, mugs plates, cutlery, bring shopping with you, ENTERTAINMENT (if you do not bring some form of cd player, computer or laptop you're pretty fucked), alcohol is a must if you wish to be well acquainted with whoever you live with, oven gloves, a dustpan and brush, mop and mop bucket, toilet brush, TOWELS, lots of socks and underwear, condoms (i am not saying HEY GET LOTS OF SEX but should it happen (and if it doesnt happen at university it probably never will) you should definitely have protection. i know it sounds really fucking trivial but seriously do it. things to make your room more homely are nice (photos, posters, that sort of thing), coathangers (really important), cleaning products and stuff like that. you probably won't need all of that when you start but make sure you pick it up over the first term, you will need all of this.

2. university is simply amazing. not only is everyone in the same position as you so everyone is super nice, but you get thrown into essentially the ADULT WORLD. you become completely independent and its great. you will meet amazing people, do some crazy shit, become properly educated, and have a fucking ball. i can't describe it, it really is something you have to experience.

3. i'm not sure on this one. i'm doing games design which i think is pretty similar and it's good. bear in mind that the first year is pretty pointless, and will be VERY SLOW (people come onto this course from a lot of different backgrounds so they have to get everyone up to the same level). but yeah, it depends where you go really.

4. expect to be poor. expect problems with your housing/flat, and expect to be woken up at 4am by a group of loud drunks who will probably decimate your halls.

5. put powder/tablets into the designated slot, set to 30/40, press start. simple.

6. i don't understand this question. if you mean support at uni it depends where you go. if you mean students then noone spends much time in university except for lectures, seminars and if they need to use the library.

7. depends what sort of look you go for. brands aren't popular, but certain looks are. a lot of students go for the h&m, primark, topman range, but charity shops are also excellent, and remember, cheap clothes are the in thing at uni.

8. take something you have multiplayer games for. those are the best consoles. we have a ps2 just for this.

9. hahahahahahahahaha no. your parents tv license will probably cover you (unless you reach a certain age) but noone cares about tv licensing really.

hope i helped.

just all those things you take for granted at home. with me i've kind of built up my supplies down here as i discovered i needed them like "wha...who's gonna wash these clothes? is it me? i think it is!!!". lots of money is nice. i dunno if you'll go out much so you might not spend money on that but buying everything for yourself is expensive as heck in contrast.

i think remember to come fully equipped with kitchen stuff is pretty important, or to have money to get those things down here cos you will need like cutlery, pots/pans, cheese grater, baking tray, glasses and cups, bottle opener.

nail clippers.

Who stays at University 24/7?

i dunno what exactly you mean by this but - i live on campus, and if you mean the kinds of people well it's all sorts. there are shy types, loud types, weirdos and geeks and stylish people and ugly people and gorgeous people and i dunno - it's just a lot of young people from all over the place. if you mean you want some insider info then i think the other questions were about that?
Quote
What games consoles should I take?

don't take one. i didn't the first semester and i didn't miss it - i did this semester, but i'm already kind of regretting it. i guess you absolutely will through since you're doing games design so take down whatever you like best? it'd be okay to have some multiplayer games to spend hours being bored with buddies with.

Do you think I should get a TV+Lisence? *

nope. you can watch any good tv on the internet and you don't need the distraction/excuse for holing yourself up.

honestly it's not that big of a deal moving away to university. once you get there, you'll just do it. you don't really have a choice, and you'll probably want to do it all anyway. i don't really know if any How To: Bein' A Kick Ass Student exists, cos you'll just figure that stuff out on your own apart from some obvious things like supplies and money.

One thing I'd recommend to anyone that is starting university that is living in dorms is try to decorate your room as if it was a regular room, not like a dorm room.  My first year I bought bedding and shit that was meant for dorm rooms and I got tired of it really really fast.  This year, when I decorated my room like it was a regular room (although smaller obviously) I've noticed I've enjoyed being in my room a lot more.  It's just way more comfortable and you'll like it a lot more than if you buy things that are sort of "dorm-oriented".
