The same story from FF4 rehashed a thousand times isn't going to cut it anymore, sorry. For a genre who's supposed focus is storyline and characters, these things are severely lacking and pitiful at best from the industry these days. Go play Crisis Core; and... JUST look at it; and marvel at how this garbage has come to be acceptable.
I have always thought the focus of the genre was number-crunching, strategizing, micro-managing, exploring, and adventuring. If you spend most of your play time exploring and fighting, then you would think that was the primary focus of the game?
About Crisis Core . . . the writing is really bad. The villain is like 100% the exact villain from the RPGMaker game I made when I was 12. I guess there are some moments in the story that I like (all of the good ones involve the awkward love story and all of them were also in the original Final Fantasy 7). The game is okay and I sort of enjoy it because it is fun to go on mini-missions and power up my dude or whatever whenever I am pooping though.
