I just didn't like how some of my characters would have tens of thousands of HP, but would die once their miniscule MP ran out. Maybe I didn't know to play the game, I dunno. It's been about 5 years.

Has anyone else noticed how the Star ocean series keeps getting more and more sci-fi as it goes along, the first was the most fantasy based and the third was the most science fiction.

You spent almost all of SO3 on Elicor. The game finally got interesting once you got off...but then they sent you right back to Elicor. The game had like, 40 hours of filler, and only ten hours of actual story.

If I remember right you could choose to use your level up points on HP or MP
so that could have been avoided :p
If an image says a thousand words, and a video shows 24 images each second, then why couldn't they condense everything I needed to learn at school into one hour long video :V

why do so many people hate these games? have you guys played them?

i've only played the second, but it's great cause it's such an intricate game. the skills, item creation, about a billion items to find, private actions and different endings are semi-unique and definitely add to the game.

the replay value is obviously high for those reasons which i'm sure is appealing to a number of people.

yeah, the characters and storyline are pretty cliche, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. rpg's have been following the same formula for ages, familiarity is part of what keeps them going.
sometimes, you need to quote yourself to feel important.

I've played 2/4. One was good (SO2), the other one sucked (SO3). I didn't play SO1 and I don't have the desire to.

Right. So more than likely I didn't know what I was doing, but still, I'm going to stay bitter and continue thinking it was a dumb idea.

Thats because the second one was awesome.  The first one was nothing above ok and the third was horrible.
Yay! Random words!

No, it went from predictable blandness to them thinking in the middle of... "writing" the story "Oh shi game is too generic we eed diferrencnesssd". So then they gave Fayt POWERZ and made the world you thought the be real THE MATRICKS.

The same story from FF4 rehashed a thousand times isn't going to cut it anymore, sorry. For a genre who's supposed focus is storyline and characters, these things are severely lacking and pitiful at best from the industry these days. Go play Crisis Core; and... JUST look at it; and marvel at how this garbage has come to be acceptable.

I am actually excited for this, I checked out the stores for it but I haven't seen it in stock. I played only the first SO and I loved it!! I wish I could remember all of it instead of the silly beginning.

Thing is, most people like SO2. But the others aren't that good. I like SO1 remake since it has similar systems as SO2 but the story is horribly generic and boring and there aren't really any other redeeming factors about it. SO3 is average at best since the whole game is basically filler like someone already mentioned. Nothing happens, you just run from a town to a dungeon to another town for 30 hours and the story doesn't really go anywhere. SO2 is the only game with some interesting characters and interesting locations. The story isn't very good but it does everything else well. I probably wouldn't go as far as saying it's one of my favorite RPG's but it's a great game.

I have always thought the focus of the genre was number-crunching, strategizing, micro-managing, exploring, and adventuring.  If you spend most of your play time exploring and fighting, then you would think that was the primary focus of the game?

About Crisis Core . . . the writing is really bad.  The villain is like 100% the exact villain from the RPGMaker game I made when I was 12.  I guess there are some moments in the story that I like (all of the good ones involve the awkward love story and all of them were also in the original Final Fantasy 7).  The game is okay and I sort of enjoy it because it is fun to go on mini-missions and power up my dude or whatever whenever I am pooping though.

Are dungeons in SO2 better than the ones in the first game? From what I remember, most dungeons were small mazes (except for the research lab).

Aside from the crappy story, you have a game that's a complete button masher, as I'm fairly certain once you finish 4 to 5 side missions; the game could be completed with your tongue... Hell - you don't even have to stop playing while you wipe.

yeah crisis core is almost entirely worthless.  it looks really nice for a psp game but the writing is, without exaggeration, awful.  i say this about a lot of games but i really mean it with crisis core.  for some sick reason i beat the game and it was basically one long cringeworthy moment.  also the battle system was maybe the most convoluted, needlessly complex one i've ever encountered.  guys ive got an idea.........lets make leveling up random and add some incomprehensible slot machine mechanic into the game.  you know what i like having to sit through?  20 second limit breaks for enemies i can kill in under 4 seconds.  and yeah it was completely brainless and even more button-mashy than star ocean.  god what a poorly thought out game.

lol

That "twist" was the only entertaining part in that game. It was carried out so bad, I couldn't help but to laugh.

That's it's secret; hell maybe that's what they were going for. It sure would explain a lot. The wincing probably also makes for faster bowel movements.
