I like metal but for the most part I don't understand the appeal of death or black metal. I listen to Scar Symmetry, Deadlock, Disillusion, Raintime and a little bit of Opeth but at least those bands don't put such overwhelming emphasis on the gutteral cookie monster vocals. In my opinion, they make the cookie monster vocals catchy and work within the frame of the music... but to me it only accents the clean vocals. I have a hard time tolerating the straight up death and black stuff... I don't see what's creative enough to distinguish two bands. Cookie monster vocals all do sound pretty close the same, anyway... at least compared to the spice rack that is singing.

I used to be into the hardcore scene and shit like the generic metal/emo stuff but I'm pretty much into more tech metal type stuff now. Stuff that's not about HUR HUR IM FUCKING HARDCORE AND EAT BATS AND PUNCH BABIES FUCK YOU or MAN I AM SO SAD I AM GOING TO SCREAM TO THE WORLD, but is more about actually sounding good and like you put effort into composing/putting the music together. Like mama luigi I can't really stand all that guttural type growling. Lots of metal vocalist suck with exceptions like Periphery, Protest the Hero, and Iron Maiden, ahd uh, other people.

Also, this guy.

two words man, two words

never gonna need two more words when it comes to metal.

Blind. Guardian.

I don't listen to metal much at all... but I am a sucker for music like this. It has the perfect amount of ridiculousness without going over the top like fucking Dragonforce.

It's funny that you bring down death and black metal because of the vocal style and how they aren't "creative" or whatever yet you list Scar Symmetry and Deadlock. Although the vocals are easier to follow, both bands are extremely generic and rip-off quite a few other bands. Also, Scar Symmetry is probably the worse band I've seen live after Samael. Also, most black metal doesn't have guttural vocals, they're higher rasp-like vocals.

A few bands:
Ahab
Ava Inferi
Celtic Frost
ColdWorld
Deinonychus
Devin Townsend
How Like A Winter
Keen of the Crow
Neurosis
The Old Dead Tree
Paradise Lost
Raventale
Reverrend Bizarre

A lot of doomy stuff in there hahaha.

Manowar

Hey, Manowar doesn't take shit from anyone. Or they do, actually from pretty much everybody, but even from under the to inch deep layer they shine blindingly out of pure glory. The glory of warriors.

On a serious side note, Strapping Young Lad (Devin Townsend's band) is for all those fed up with all the sucky metal bands trying desperately to sound angry and badass somewhere between the guitar solos and the embarrassing lyrics.

Here's a bill of some of the better metal bands out there: http://www.scion.com/rock

And yeah, I'm going to be attending this! Tickets were free and people are reselling theirs for $75+ now on ebay. Entry's not even guaranteed since they handed 10,000 and only have room for 5,000. Good thing I live here in Atlanta and am not driving from the other side of the US like some other folks.

Some of what I listen to:

Opeth
Yyrkoon
Death
Pantera
Edge of Sanity
Kalmah
Testament
Megadeth
Vader
Cannibal Corpse
Sepultura
Hypocrisy
Carcass
In Flames

+ much more

And I'm really getting into the new wave of thrash metal bands coming out (HeXeN,Gama Bomb,Municipal Waste,SSS,Fueled By Fire,Evile, etc.)

Some thoughts...

Never really been an Iron Maiden guy. I can understand why people think they're just so amazing but they're simply not in my taste and I can't get into them. Most likely it's because of Bruce's high pitched voice and almost every verse composed sounds like the exact same power chord progression.

Bands like Killswitch Engaged, Trivium, Lamb of God, Bullet for my Valentine etc. are very very gay and are poser metal. Thank you.

Damn that looks like fun...

Here in Thunder Bay on April 12th Lamb of God (meh), Children of Bodom (gay), As I lay dying (gay) and Municipal Waste ( YIPPPYYYYYY!!!) are coming to town. Haven't made up my mind as to go or not..

So while I agree that some of those bands you named suck, why are they poser? what does it take to be a "poser" metal band?

What is generic about Deadlock? Or even Scar Symmetry for that matter? Deadlock is female fronted melodeath (where the female in question is using clean vocals)... that's something I've never encountered before... not to mention the employment of the electronic and jazz elements. Their older stuff like earth.revolt was pretty generic from what I can tell. Also yeah I knew the distinction between black and death vocals but they both are so forced and ridiculous and I can't take any music seriously that uses nothing but them!

Some of these "not metal" bands shouldn't even be on this list, though.

I found it humerous when it said "This is just dumb....*dragonforce*"(even though I don't really "hate" them, their music just isn't my thing)

dark_crystalis, I absolutely love How Like a Winter. Too bad they only have the 1.5 albums.

I used to be really into heavy metal (and some of gw's dumber people still think I am) and thought it was the best shit ever. Which for a lonely 15 year old... it most likely was! But I grew older, tastes changed and now I can barely listen to any of it.
the only metal I listen to semi-regularly now is Judas priest's first three albums, and I still occasionally enjoy the non-bruce maiden albums... yet curiously Bruce's solo stuff is prettymuch the only other metal I listen to.

I can't listen to music anymore unless it has vibe solos.
yeah Priest!!!  :fogetrockon:

I only listened to one album plus a few songs, I can't even remember the title of the album. Except for the female vocals the music was extremely generic melodic death metal. Scar Symmetry are just part of this "new wave" of popular metal bands that just plain suck. I get so many albums that sound exactly the same and Scar Symmetry is a part of those bands. Their solos are generic, uninspiring plus they can't even pull them off properly live. I really don't get it why a lot of people listen to them. They just don't have any really redeeming qualities. And is it just me or are most fans around 15-16?

Brad, good list of bands there. Most of them are well known but for good reasons. Edge of Sanity is so frickin' good. The new Cannibal Corpse is also very very solid, the production is great. The only band in that list that I really dislike is Kalmah, I couldn't get into them.

the_hoodie, I'm glad you liked them. I talked with the singer online and he didn't rule out the possibility of another How Like A Winter album but they're currently not living in the same city so it's hard to practice. It's been 6 years so I doubt they're really going to make on especially since the singer is now doing The Foreshadowing (check them out, pretty good).

At the Gates
I grew up with this album, tremble everytime I hear the shotgun and still love jamming along to this.. well that is when I'm in mood for this kind of music. It's pretty hard to listen to nowadays :shady:
