ORDERS!!!

THE O!!!
fuuuuck in the same concept as orders of magnitude.

condsidering I was taught it as brackets first, then in order of multiplication/division then addition/subtraction I guess it has come down to bad teaching again.

people who are just hopeless and shit at maths usually become professional footballers.
there's hope for me yet

but people DO fail maths classes, that's not exactly uncommon. in the US (at least i think this is right) you have to repeat years until you pass them? (correct me if this isn't right), whereas in the uk you just fail and move on. you CAN repeat the years until you pass them, but you don't have to. people who are just hopeless and shit at maths usually become professional footballers.
This is true, but I beg to differ that they fail because of not knowing the simple pemdas. It's much more likely to fail because you can't do "complex" multiplications or divisions in lower grades. I don't think it'd be an overstatement to say that knowing pemdas is much easier than say, the multiplication table of 10*10. Sure, there might be some people who fail because they don't know the right answer to 1+2*3, but you can't seriously claim that number to be 20% of your population.

yeah but people use multiplication and therefore they know it

but really usually I just work it out do people really just use times tables and not just kind of calculate it in their head

I might've gotten every single question wrong about -4 ^ 2 but what would that be like 1 point off of one test maybe if school was like Donkey Kong Country and you needed to get 101,102,103% on everything to beat it I would know the answer - I still did well in the math classes around the time we would've learned that, like in the 90s (I mean my grades were in the 90s although it was probably the 1990s too yeah)

maybe other times there were word problems and I dunno even though +16 was the intuitive answer for me at the time maybe it didn't make any sense with the context

ehh? i dont see how anyone could get this wrong. this is, like, basic 6th grade pre-algebra. 4x^2 is not equal to (4x)^2. it's 4 times x^2.

EDIT: plus, just remember PEMDAS: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. its kind of common sense to know the order of operations.

whenever you say 95% OF PEOPLE DONT KNOW PEMDAS RAMI... you are including people's parents and shit who haven't been in school for years and use math for tips. it's not as excusable when you're in your low twenties. everyone at gw should know order of operations man. I know thats bourgeosie as fuck but come on.

those aren't hidden operations. that's just substitution of mathematical rules

no they're hidden because they have to come into play sometimes

this is a really dumb post

a) like Rowain said, I don't understand how people can say "I don't see how anyone could get this wrong." Those who did not get the correct answer either were not taught this concept in school OR they understand order of operations but their brain accidentally "read" the equation as "negative four to the second power"

b) common sense?  Do you even know what the phrase "common sense" means? There is nothing inherently obvious about this! It's a mathematical rule that is taught to children in elementary school. Common sense would be anything involving natural tendencies of the human body. aka NOT JUMPING IN FRONT OF A TRAIN.

maths education in here is really dumn unless you want to study it. The stuff you learn at 5-16 is really basic, and was generally based around balancing really simple equations, or solving simple puzzles. We had about ten minutes on bodmas and it was never mentioned again so it just kind of slips from some peoples memories(I remember it though). Lessons consisted of working our way through textbooks without any real tuition. Well ok when I was 13/14 I had a gr8 teacher but he was the only one!
It's not seen as important to know more maths than times tables up to 10X10, even at age of 16.
rami, don't get upset as seriously people are capable of not understanding maths. At school the worst kids at maths (Somewhere between 20-30 out of 100 students) struggled with things like that. It's like really common I'd say more than 20%.

People are terrible at maths to the point of needing calculator to do basic addition and treating me like a freak because I can do it in head faster than them on calc.

wait are you serious. I was under the assumption the british education system spanked the american one but if you're TRICKING IT by not actually teaching math how valid is that comparison!

TEN MINUTES ON ORDER OF OPERATIONS???

i dunno what this means i'm referring to the fact that like a year ago mkkmypet was a staunch creationist and i got so mad i told her something along the lines of I DONT CARE IF YOU'RE 13 STOP BRINGING THIS UP BECAUSE YOU'RE AWFUL AT THIS OR I WILL STRANGLE YOU.

steel notice the people arguing it have been all british people. i don't think we gotta give you any more proof here.

i would say our education system GENERALLY trumps the american one, but maths is just so bad it's stupid.
