the british version of life on mars is actually a pretty awesome show and well worth watching but its not surprise that the american version falls short

Hey guys let's talk about Dollhouse! Anyone watched it? Last episode was pretty good up until the end, they basically just went back to square one and slapped the viewers in the face. "Ha! Want some story? Well you aint getting any, lets get back to weekly assignments which have nothing to do with anything."

i actually thought it was a better ep. part of this is because there were actual character interactions going on. not much happened in the main plot, but i'm a little surprised you expected anything other than a monster of the week show for a bit. regardless we learn a bit of important character stuff. the doc actually cares about her work. topher had a decent scene where he's scared (and is he just a nerd or is he just as insecure????). boyd expresses some weird backhanded pride in echo for escaping. these were nice looks into character seeing as how the show is based in having no characters which i think is a good tradeoff to have for no plot movement whatsoever.

there is one interesting point i read somewhere that the show suffers because there is no "cast" per se. sort of like my previous complaint but the thing is, buffy etc strength was you had the buffy crew (i think they are called SCOOBIES gross) and here you do not have that. so it was nice to have a few characters show up since who knows when or if the dolls will ever have a long term character.

also this is really mean and weird but something about Mellie or whatever strikes me as really really dumpy. and i am not one of those guys, i dont like how the others look much (sierra in particular is skinny as fuk) but i kind of dont want to see Mellie's cleavage. aaaa put ya fruits away...

Yeah it was more interesting i thought the reveal at the end was well done.

However, we got a another female prostitute in this one, this time french, and the most we've had of a gigolo was victor in this episode picking out some leather chaps from his clothes rack and HILARIOUSLY throwing them away in shame. I think that makes it every single episode that we've had echo running around in an indefensibly skimpy costume inappropriate for her assignment with rarely a bare attempt at an excuse made, every single episode we've had one of the female 'dolls' playing a prostitute for some weird asshole, and the extent of male doll sexual engagements extends to a bad double take you could argue as homophobic and not seem that ridiculous, I think.

I don't think confronting your serial rapist by basically saying "you're mean!" and then having to run away because he's powerful and he always wins is any kind of closure for a rape victim either and it would annoy me if the show even allowed room for that kind of interpretation, but it basically just said "yip she's all closed up now. she's fixed!!!" and that's the end of the story this week. I'm sure there'll be more of this Sierra rape stuff, though, and who knows it might even be handled better in episodes but I doubt it.

I mean this isn't even a TERRIBLE idea for a show, but it's been executed about as poorly as it could be in every way.

First of all, don't call it Dollhouse - how about The Factory? With a few tweaks to the premise this could be a good name. So, don't make the focus of the show a bunch of mindless drones who occasionally get engaged in these ridiculous weekly cliche plots which can't claim an ounce of believable credibility, even when you accept the sci-fi angle. The show can still be about a factory of blank slates who get imprinted with various personalities and jobs, but let's not make them day long engagements - these people get sent out to the world with a host of conditioned responses, personality traits, and skills. They're everywhere, and they are what keeps the elite in power. That's why they exist. Then, let's say a couple of people from the factories become self-aware and realise that they have been acting out programming their entire adult lives and then the show becomes a politcal one about a little band of freedom fighters fighting the terror of the status quo and society's apparent indifference to it. That's a show I'd watch, that'd be a show with half a brain.

This show wasn't made with a brain in mind though, this show was made in the interest of Joss Whedon's sweaty balls and the only thing that annoys me about the inevitable network kicking of those balls back where they belong is that it won't be for the right reasons.

i'm not trying to make fun of you but if i seriously try to even begin to apply a feminist perspective to everything in dollhouse my head fucking explodes.

Okay, I mean whatever but Joss Whedon has this ridiculously undeserved reputation as being a feminist writer and I just find it very - I dunno - either funny or appalling that this is what he has come up with next. It's an easy target but it deserves it so why not.

I think you are looking for things that are not...there?   Because half the things you said you can find in any other show. Girls in skimpy outfits that arn't really practical for their mission!? Oh my?! sounds like all female attire.... in every movie.

none of those shows have a supposedly pro-female writer.

whoa, yeah I pretty much hated the first 4 episodes... but it definitely got interesting down the road... I just finished the current episode ("Needs").

The ending of the current episode "cleans up" the story for Joss to continue it in a better way, honestly, this is the start of the show, episodes 1-4 were almost all filler. 5-8 were kind of a preview into the true story.

I honestly can't wait for more.

Great episode tonight! So much stuff happened in one hour that advanced the plot.

*waits for someone to point out the Dominatrix angle as further female exploitation*

I actually liked that.

Like Mateui said, the plot did advance, it was noticeably less cheesy than the other episodes, and actually had shit going on.
