we've got, in basic historical order:
NEW ORLEANS
the original jazz. they used tubas in the bass section (not ever used again a great amount). almost 100% of the songs are blues.
SWING
swing is the loose jazz equivalent of today's radio hip hop. there are some damn good ones, of course. it just depends on if you like the style.
BE-BOP
jazz began to get on heroin during the late 40's. it began from swing musicians just jamming all night. the most notable player was Charlie Parker. it's fast tempo, and the improv is all over the place.
COOL JAZZ
it's laid back, chamber jazz. a reaction to be-bop.
MODAL
most songs were using only 2 or 3 chords. this is commonly where you will see jazz stereotypes.
AVANT GARDE (FREE JAZZ)
there were no pre-written chords. have fun.
FUSION
just like it says. it uses rock, jazz, funk, latin, etc. the first pioneers weren't exactly accepted mainstream, but whatever.
ACID JAZZ
dj's cuttin up jazz samples and throwing in some things. honestly, they don't always use jazz samples. as far as improv, well i suppose the arrangement is always different and there's scratching or cutting involved. a good place to start is dj shadow.

Django only had one finger, its as big as four cats, and hes got a retractable leg so he can leap up at you better and you know what?He lights up at night, and hes got four ears. Two of them are for listening and the other two are kind of back-up ears, and his claws are as big as cups and for some reason hes got a tremendous fear of stamps and Mrs Doyle was tellin me that hes got magnets on his tail so if youre made out of metal he can attach himself to you,and instead of a mouth its got four arses
