why is japan so often the focus of this nerd-vent shit? why are there so many articles about japan?

i would like to see more reasons why someone hates indonesia because their traditional music consists of banging on pots and pans or maybe a rant about getting fined for chewing gum in public in Laos or the ups and downs of yurt livin in mongolia

Because children play video games and watch anime and get this idea that Japan is some Holy Grail of countries. Then when they finally get there they are disappointed that there aren't mechas, ninjas and yakuzas everywhere and raping school girls isn't legal.

Also, about that article, he's not really being serious and he knows how trite everything he's saying is. Tim Rogers is one of the only good game journalists and his whole thing is how off-topic and long winded and faux pretentious he gets.

http://actionbutton.net/

This is his site and it's one of the only video game sites even worth looking at.

thanks for this. i've been looking for more of tim rogers' stuff ever since he stopped posting stuff on insert credit since tim rogers is responsible for me doing a great deal of thinking about the way i design games. he's always a pleasure to read, even if i don't agree with him on everything.

Well...  on-topic:

Battlefield: Bad Company 2  Specifically the multiplayer.  Its pretty fun.  My only complaint is the fact that I cant run and strafe at the same time.   This may sound like a minor complaint, but it means if I'm running head-on towards an enemy, I can't annoy him by strafing back and forth, or circle-strafing.

GAH, while Bioshock 2's multiplayer is decently designed, its net code is AWFUL. Most matches are a step away from unplayable lag. Few of them have me spazing out in all directions and becoming disoriented every couple of seconds.

Pretty bad... kind of a bummer. You would think it'd be decent when it came to net code considering its using the unreal engine... which was built specifically for a game that is pretty much just multiplayer.

Oh well. I still got to finish prestegeing in MW2 anyway.

About that Kotaku article, I skimmed it yesterday and laughingly pointed out all the things this guy hates about Japan to my older brother who lived there for a couple years. And, he pretty much nodded to everything. Especially the Japanese Comedy Duo part.

He also said that people that live in Japan for a really long time and don't WANT to become Japanese (like those Anime kids who would give their left nut to live in Japan and adore ALL Japanese customs) will eventually totally snap because their culture is so radically different from American culture.

The Kotaku article and that actionbutton review have a disturbingly large set of commonalities between them.

I couldn't have been the only one who noticed that.

Still playing Mount & Blade. Badass game. I have a 100 strong all-cavalry army and it's so satisfying to run down enemy infantry and knock them all out.

I'm currently playing:

Modern Warfare 2:
Damn, I've never really used LIVE much for anything other than downloading demo's and such, and prior to buying MW2, I'd only played a few games of Halo 3 and a bit of Gears of War on LIVE, but MW2 is pretty addictive, though I've not played much of the campaign (I got up to the "oh my god this game is controversial and violent and will turn us into terrorists despite having the option to skip it given to us multiple times... THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!... That shouldn't legally be playing this game >:[" ][/"]Bad Company 2:[/b]
As a fan of Bad Company due to it's "blow shit up" engine and it's more light hearted approach to warfare story telling, I had to get BC2.
Having only bought it today, I can't say much about it, but it definitely feels like the difficulty has gone up a bit, which is good as I beat BC on it's hardest setting first, then only played on normal for achievements.
I tried the vastly increased online modem but it just sat at a loading screen for about 5 minutes before I got pissed and exited to the 360 dashboard, which is disappointing as MW2's online mode works well and only rarely shunts me back to the menus.
EA \ DICE uses dedicated servers while Infinity Ward opted for user based match hosting, so it's possible that the servers were experiencing heavy load at the time (I was informed that I had bought the last available 360 copy of BC2 as it had sold out pretty quickly).
The idea of being able to find vehicles on maps as opposed to MW2's killstreak rewards is another plus for me as new players don't have to wait to unlock them and stay alive long enough to use them.
Another issue I have with BC2 is that there's no solo deathmatch mode, which is kinda odd and annoying as I prefer deathmatch to team games.

Final Fantasy 8 (PS3):
From when Square made good games.
I tried playing FFVII again, but I just can't get into it, but FFVIII seems to be OK.
If it didn't have random-battle-itis and it had modern visuals, it'd probably have people saying Square remembered how to make games that don't make people hate them.
These days though, I'd rather play Mass Effect (either) or The Elder Scrolls... Possibly Dragon Age, though I didn't love it as other people seem to.

P.S.
For more proof that Square are idiots, look at the release date of FF13 in Europe... A Tuesday?
I don't know about the land of raw fish and tentacle porn, but we usually get paid on a Friday unless we're paid monthly, but I suppose it's just another excuse for buying Battlefield instead

This can depend on the company as well dude. For instance, I get paid on a wednesday fortnightly (sucks shit) but I know people who get paid on thursdays, tuesdays, mondays even.

Tried playing Kingdom Hearts 2 again today, but I just felt so empty inside while playing it... When I tried to go to areas irrelevant to the plot of the game and got the message "we need to go here *blabla*", I died a little inside and thought back to the exploration in KH1.

Damn. This is one of those games that I want to like, but I just don't.

Got Heavy Rain today, it's been fantastic so far.  I can definitely see myself playing it multiple times to see how the story changes.  I think that it's the type of game where you can't explain how it's good, you just have to play it to know.

Picked a random game. "Shellshock Nam '67"

Installed it, got into its menus, but gameplay gets some DirectX error (8876086c) but apparently its just unable to but run on Vista or 7 even in compatibility mode.

I guess its no big loss. It got mediocre ratings anyway. but still, would like to be able to play it.

I guess I'll just go back to CoD:MW2 some more, but I gotta say I've grown a tad sick of the game and the grind that is presteging.

Wow.

I played the Just Cause 2 demo. If the entire game is like that, that's really quite terrible.

Elaborate? I've only heard good things about it.
