the more i read and see the more i am getting totally turned off by this game. i watched more than an hour's worth of walkthrough videos that some dude is recording(the first one of the bunch is linked on the first page of this topic) and i was left profoundly unimpressed. it's really sad but the most interesting parts, bar none, were when the guy got hungry/bored and started wandering around outside. from what i saw of it, the game is really bland and tiresome, with extremely uninteresting level design.

unless i hear something that legitimately contradicts what i've heard and seen, i will not be wasting my time and money on this.

I think the only original SE game in the last 10 years was The World Ends With You. Seriously, anyone with a DS get it, now.

Back to FF: it's clear that since Sakaguchi left, the overall quality of SE games has declined a lot. Improvements of technology should be for a better being of videogames, not making them suck and look like wannabe Hollywood movies.

I agree with most posts here, although the art style is amazing, the design of the levels are bland, unispired and boring. The character design is just terrible, pretty people and some dude for comedy relief dressed all in funny clothes, no thanks. And everything else... the battle system is just eye candy, but judging from what has been said, it's some sort of button masher.

So that's it.

      RIP
Final Fantasy
1987-2009

Edit: Famitsu gave it a 39/40. Dunno if that's good or bad, it just shows how biased Famitsu is

Man Konix, if even half of what you posted is true, this sounds god awful. Christ it would've been better if they just made a carbon copy of Dragon Quest with HD graphics. Everything here sounds simply like they are being different for the sake of being different and not actually designing a fun game.

edit: This is reminding me more and more of Legend of Mana, with beautiful graphics and music but huge gameplay missteps that threw series conventions out the window. At least LoM had some novel storybook concepts, and the whole "rebuilding the world" thing was a strangely cool idea. It was spoiled by stupidly easy gameplay though, and a lack of depth.

I just don't understand how they could do such a 180 after the progress they made with FF12.

I don't know about that. It seems more like they are just trying to make the gameplay as easy to swallow as possible for a bigger - they've been doing that with each game for a while now, and what i've seen so far of this is just taking all that further - and dressing it up shibuya style for the same reason. It sounds different than the games before it, yeah, but I don't think the motivation for that was to create something unique.

it's like Square gets off on knowing their fanbase is a bunch of huge tools and just see how much they can push the envelope and still be seen as these gods of gamingdom

Edit: Also Swordofkings128 how do you have such inventive ideas in your games and yet you like any modern Final Fantasy game. I would think they'd bore you or something, like you literally make your own games as a last resort to still feel entertained in such a trite and boring gaming landscape. Not that your games are flawless but it seems to come from a deep-seated hatred of unoriginality so you're like the most confusing person I've ever met

Why are you guys so hung up on towns? Breath of Fire 5 was brought up earlier in the topic and was promptly disregarded, but it's probably the best example of a game without (or at least from what I remember - I know you started in a town but I think that was it??) many towns. In fact, it was probably the best RPG on the PS2 and everything about the game was excellent. It was also very linear without feeling linear at all. I'm willing to believe that Square is approaching it in a way similar to BoF5. I guess what I'm saying is that we should wait to see how they utilize the uh, townlessness and linearity instead of writing them off immediately. That said, the game looks like garbage and I don't give a fuck about it and wouldn't have bought it regardless.

ALSO I think Hundley or someone said Square hasn't made a good game in a decade and that is not correct!!

Well, I'm all for it if it was anything like Breath of Fire or Saga Frontier, I just highly doubt it. I'd love for the game to prove me wrong.

thanks! I love the way you put that.

I spend most of my time making games, not playing them, but I make games because its a fun way to tell a story and show people another world.

anyways, it's incredibley hard to explain why I look forward to FF13, but maybe it's because I tend to look at everything satirically. especially games. ff seems to be the biggest case of satire in the gaming industry, clinging to it's obsolete gameplay elements and tiresome character archetypes, its almost ironic that a game like FF10 had such cutting edge graphics and cinematics but played like a game on the SNES. whats more, FF13 had taken out a lot of elements that were so relevant to the final fantasy gameplay style yet dubbed the name final fantasy that it's like a sarcastic kick in the pants to gamers now or days wanting flashy graphics and fast paced gameplay, like its saying "oh is that what you like? well have this and well here you go.".

but the biggest thing I'm looking forward to is the music. Masashi Haumaza is my favorite composer and this could be some of his best work yet. plus the graphics are nice. I guess its like looking forward to a sarcastic kick in the pants covered in diamonds and amazing music.

I always like to tell my friends about the games I play because they only play popular games like Call of Duty or Gears of War. hearing they're biased opinions on games they never played is pretty entertaining and we always get a good laugh out of it. My brother(he's like 28 and I'm 17) is as much a game fan as I am and we usually discuss games in a sarcastic and comical manner, and whenever I play games or he plays games we always make fun of it, no matter if its good or bad(he has a wife and a 1 year old daughter so he's pretty busy, but has time for games). maybe this is why I like these kinds of games, they're like b-movies you watch with your friends and have a great time making fun of them and how bad they are.

or I'm just a sci-fi nerd and an rpg fan and love anything with sci-fi + rpg. there are so few of those out there you know.  :welp:

Square+Final Fantasy=Fail
Square+Kingdom Hearts=Epic Win
Square+Dragon Quest (Remakes)=Epic Win

So in my opinion square should get over final fantasy unless 15 is a classic FF alot like FF9. Kingdom Hearts is a great example of what squares done right in the last 10 years. And for dragon quest the remake of dragon quest 5 was fucking amazing anyone with a ds get it now.

I've played the game. It is pretty terrible just so you guys know. Definitely one of the worst Final Fantasy games I have ever played. Everything said in that list is entirely true unfortunately.

Except for kind of one thing. The game is linear, but halfway through the game it does open up slightly. But even then it is linear, but you have minor choices.
You can for example do side quests, but once you start one, you are teleported to another straight line map, go to the end, kill the boss, and then get teleported back. Those is literally the only "non-linear" parts of the game.

I didn't see it mentioned, but the game also has tons of cutscenes. It is not as bad as MGS4, but it is still really bad. Especially since all but one of the characters are annoying as fuck. (Lightning is literally a female hybrid of Cloud and Squall,  but she is not as emo as either of them, and because she is quieter than all the other characters, she is about the only one who is not annoying)

All in all, you are better off avoiding this game. Even if you are a big fan of RPGs, you're missing out on nothing.

I linked a track from this game when I tried to think of rpg music I can still take seriously

I think Chrono Trigger's stuff still holds up really well too

but the original SNES version looks pretty fucking lol. I think Square just edited their own sprites from Final Fantasy IV like somebody on here making a bunch of RTP edits of Alex and calling it original graphics

Guys stop dissing Kingdom hearts, where else will i get my dumb frills that one can only get with an offensively transparent marketing gimmick???
I live off cute anime boys, bland predictable and un-interesting storylines and character designs that most likely came from deviant art.

Soo...

Linear paths
No exploration (towns etc)
Menu based interactions
Fights that don't give experience

They might as well have made "Final Fantasy XIII: The book"
