omar is like the worst caricature of the noble savage isn't he? I'm only in the middle of season 2 so it's only him and d'angelo so far but in d'angelo'd case it's just clumsy writing and character development. omar is literally a noble and wise stick-up man who refuses to curse or harm civilians and is also gay.

I get what you mean though, concerning the real america vs a perception of it. it can probably only be conveyed in the media with great talent/luck/attention to detail and even then the final product is just a vignette yuck of one small part of society

Westerns are really the weirdest shit ever they're like the same plot every single time and has anybody made some experimental movie like not COWBOYS IN THE FUTURE but like, somebody should make a Western that is in the correct time period and everything and it really is about THE OLD WEST etc. but it's filmed in such a non-stereotypical way that it doesn't give any of the warm comfortable fuzzy Western feelings it feels like weird cold unsaturated german art movie shit. Or just do a movie that's nothing but Chinese people working on railroads. Not SHANGHAI NOON where it becomes a cowboy movie

I think cowboy movies are like the FOREST THEME WIZARDS AND WARRIORS that Velfarre was talking about but is socially acceptable for normal non-geeky people to obsess over seriously this is all you need to sum up all Westerns ever made in movie history  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6BQKFs3-VM   the rpg forest theme of cowboy movies. But seriously I'm saying like nervous that I'm not even playing RPGs to play rpg's anymore it's just really a medium for accessing RPG forest themes that are something affirmative to my weak psyche

Yeah westerns tend to be really PURE idk strict to the genre things, you don't get too many radical westerns ever!  There is something really charming about how...generic they are!  I'm not sure why.

El Topo is the only bizarre western I can think of and 90% of the trailer is actually a guy telling you EL TOPO IS NOT A WESTERN IT GOES FAR BEYOND ANY WESTERN so that's p. great.

since everyone's fucking obsessed with Bourne Ultimatum documentary style to any random genre of movie they should do this with westerns

maybe they did actually 3:10 to Yuma or one of those random ones that wasn't half bad

I didn't mean it quite that way. That's still like REDRESSING the stereotypical format of a western, what I'm saying is I want to see this really dry documentary sort of film set in the old west with no shootouts or train robberies or whatever. Or if it is done it like completely subverts whatever camera stuff/acting/musical motifs people want to see in a scene like that. Like they walk however many paces they want and both characters have great terror and uncertainty in their eyes instead of badass GRITTINESS then suddenly this plays   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6S9mcik9S0&feature=player_embedded  also it does like extreme closeup of eyes but suddenly it is a basset hound or something and maybe  they don't even walk any paces they run in circles  sorry your universe is not as ordered as your crappy cowboy movies

Idk if this is exactly the same sort of reasoning but this made me think of the Lady Oscar movie where the only thing the movie did that was actually brilliant and not just mediocre or terrible was that it was a movie that featured Marie Antoinette but she was entirely insignificant.  Like she was more a necessary piece of furniture and every now and then they'd pop in and be like "oh btw marie antoinette was here and this is what is going on in her life" but ultimately you really could have cut her out entirely.  She is not usually a background character in movies, she's either the entire focus or she's not really there at all but this movie just treated her as this completely unimportant sidenote and I found this fantastic.  I got a poster from this movie recently of a shot during a dance at Versailles and even in this poster she is just standing in the background looking uneasy and this is more or less her entire role in the film.  This would be like a western where there are cowboys and shootouts, but you don't really notice them you just like...see them through the window of a shop as two characters have some other conversation.

that's pretty great but I'm not sure if it's what I meant either. I guess you might end up with something bad like THE POSTMAN wasn't that supposed to be in some Mad Max post-apocalyptic world but it had no sort of post-apocalyptic cliches it was just some guy on the road trying to get somewhere. But yeah I'm not sure if I meant this either Westerns just seem so much like blind and deaf people could figure out what's going on in a Western by just laying on the floor and feeling the vibration of the musical cues. It just like exists to perpetuate itself like the soap opera thing we were talking about. Soap operas for heterosexual males

Yeah I was sort of veering off into something else but I think I get what you are saying about westerns.  The soap opera analogy is perfect, it's got to fit the soap opera or western archetype or else it cannot possibly exist.  How come nobody ever like...even as a comedy thing makes a bizarre soap opera?  Actually wasn't there some soap opera a few years ago that had witches or something in it all of a sudden?  Maybe I am just making this up and I just WANT this to exist idk.

Passions is the soap opera I was thinking of:

Quote
Passions follows the various romantic and paranormal adventures of the residents of Harmony, a fictional New England hamlet. Storylines center around the interactions among members of its multi-racial core families — the African American Russells, Caucasian Cranes and Bennetts, and half-Mexican half-Irish Lopez-Fitzgeralds — as well as the supernatural including town witch Tabitha Lenox.

I kinda want to see it.  Going by the wiki page it sounds ridiculous.

agh IGA brand ice cream comes in like the plainest container ever why would you do this it looks so unappealing and yet somehow it works in a holistic sense like as an entire object the design works it doesn't really look like a real world object it looks like a POWERUP of ice cream

I wish people would stop talking in unbroken text paragraphs!

Anyway, on another topic, One of the RMN guys is requesting members to create characters loosely  based  on themselves  for use in his game. I got the chance to make one, naming him "Deimos"  after the "terror" part of my nick here.

I had some trouble figuring out  what his personality was like so I wrote him a back story. It felt good as I hadn't done any creative writing in ages.  In the end he ended up having a few of my traits, but a much grimmer history involving loneliness, loss, and torture.  I may post the bio some time soon.
Everyone has the right to be himself; wise men know how to,when, and whether to navigate the boundary between their rights and those of others when they collide.
