trying to get my gf turned off of shit like twilight and hungergames and into "other" so far she likes WWZ.

I think next is either douglas adams or animal farm. I just don't know anything else that could equate vamps and bullshit ayn rand dystopia into socio-philosophic commentary. I dunno if she's getting that though. Not sure yet I think she's enjoying it on a "walking dead" kind of level but I explained it a little bit.
Dresden Files. Transition her to good stories using something close to her current interests.

I get the jist of it, what makes it good? is just typically well written? I'm not only trying to get her to be interested in intellectual work and writing of quality but she's country as shit and kind of world ignorant so I'm trying to unwittingly rub that off a little bit.

but yeah alot of damage has been done between Stephanie Myers (wtf her name is), army wives, and ol' fiddy shades of bdsm

if we do not grant freedom of speech to those who have prejudice to voice, then it makes it that much harder to know who they are

yeah they said ugly and ignorant things and are ugly and ignorant things, but the good of it is that people are saying "that's bullshit" en masse

would the media or people in general have done that 2 decades ago? 1 decade ago?  things are definitely changing for the better on that point

... at least in the US... russia, geez.  a brazen descent into fascism is what that is.

still, it's probably gonna suck to be gay in the south for some time yet... glad I live in southern california

Bing! Exactly correct. Let the moron speak and allow his zealots to ride to his aid. The more garbage they spew the less we have to acknowledge them.

Religious knuckleheads have been around since the beginning of the public discourse and will continue to be for a long, long time. Remain vigilant and carry your curmudgeon stick for the wily ones.

Yeah, While I disagree with Phil Robertson for obviously being a generally terrible moron IDK if I agree that the correct justification for free speech is "now we know who you homophobic fucktards are". Its certainly a GOOD REASON but for me its more that you can't draw a line on free speech because that line can be blurred and most wise people don't want that. Though, I'll admit we already sort of do draw lines with obscenity laws. :P Which I disagree with because it defeats the purpose of free speech if states can just say "HAHA NO".

HOWEVER, I don't think this is completely a free speech issue. Free Speech is a legal issue. What we are dealing with here is a different beast, corporate censorship. Corporate censorship is an awful thing but it just happens to have a vaguely positive result in this case. Another form of terrifying corporate censorship coming to an internet near you: the destruction of net neutrality and the de-anominizing of the internet

We are in a dystopia. The conspiracy nuts were right *dons tin foil hat*

yea, you can sugar-coat it but it's really about what A&E does as a business and brand in order to keep making money. people supporting the DD guy unsurprisingly don't appear to realize that tho, and automatically make the jump to American Rights and politics and liberals and the world going to hell.

yeah, I would never assume that the network's censuring of the duck dynasty dudes was on account of some corporate moral compass.  still, it pleases me to see the vox populi speaking out against those guys such that it does force the network to sideline them to save brand face

speaking of net neutrality, it seems like a month ago there was a lot of talk about an impending ruling that would be its death knell, but I haven't heard any news since.  I assume this means the worst hasn't happened yet, or else people would probably be petitioning or whatever.

after doing some quick research, it looks like the judgement may come as late as march.  ugh US judiciary is so slow

I don't know that this is corporate censorship, insofar A&E didn't attempt to hide what he had said(not that they had a chance to). The Duckman family has always been a very public figurehead for all things related to the money-making aspects of christianity, so it was only a matter of time before something like this occurred.

A&E is probably just doing this to capitalize on the free press it will get them from the religious press's righteous fervor.

Its not about free speech or censorship. They still quoted what he said, he's still a free man. They dropped his ass for being a prejudiced piece of shit. To me, its the same effect as if I walked around at work comparing black people to gorillas, they would fucking drop my ass and rightfully so.

I'm actually quite surprised at most of the reactions here. I expected more approval at the response he got. I think the main reason they suspended him is because so many people watch that television show and he's exposing thousands of young developing people to those backwards assed ideas. To me, theres nothing wrong with taking his soapbox. Ethically speaking, any other man or woman would and should have had the same done to them if they openly belittle an entire people like that out of sheer stupidity using a public medium. Internet aside, I wouldn't really call it a public medium if you're a racist blogger or radio show host because people expect that criteria.

maybe I'm nitpicking though, I dunno.

Actually no, thats what I was so angry about. There are alot of fundies coming out and supporting his right to say that and they are planning on boycotting A&E until he gets back on the show. Which is very very sad but I actually see this working....

Edit: I'm glad folks are taking part in this discussion though. Its bringin a few heartbeats back to saltw.

I know that isn't true just by looking at A&E's current lineup: Psychic Tia, Storage Wars, Dr Phil's The Marriage Test. A&E is worried about the bottom line more than what their corral of idiots say. That is why they only suspended the guy rather than outright cancel Duck Dynasty.

See, I think this is all a conspiracy that A&E and Phil Duckman went in on. They knew it would make a whole stupid white-people controversy and when A&E finally "buckles" and lets him back on the show they'll have attracted all sorts of new, dimwitted attention. Fuck television networks, man.

Oh I'm definitely not talking about A&E but the advocate group that spoke up.

Business is a souless vehicle

Dudes been saying racist shit and ignorant shit off and on. I think it was just a matter of time and I don't think they'd want that kind of exposure, they've got plenty enough less negative as it is. Lol I know hundreds of people like him. I think he's the genuine real deal.

ya it occurred to me that this certainly doesn't hurt the network either way. it's more press for their biggest money-maker. that christian blogger just said "I never watched duck dynasty, but I have it on now!!" supporting my beliefs in the only OTHER way the consumer knows how, flippe the channel on the fuckin tube

I don't know what this means I think it must be worded incorrectly or something but I get the gist of what you're saying.

The idiots are supposed to be boycotting the program but out of their own curiosity alot of them are watching it after the fact and boosting ratings. Man, I've seen southern lesbian/gays inadvertently supporting this shit because DUCK DYNASTY FREE SPEECH. As well as a few open minded country individuals I know who did the same damn thing and then when I told them what it was about they were like "well, thats fucked up". Which goes to show how uninformed and hive minded people are.

resurrecting that old topic: I just wanted to say that A&E called off the suspension. They probably saw that people were reacting negatively and said "We are pissing people off anyway? We're losing money on this deal. Fuck it, bring the bearded shit back on."

But yeah, while I might technically agree that its not 'successful' corporate censorship. It is still was an attempt at it. And corporations use the threat of being fired to shush people all the time for far less "noble" (company doesn't actually give a fuck so its more like pseudo-noble) reasons than firing someone for saying homophobic shit like in this case.
