He means there were no Invincible dodging, such as Air dodging, and pressing down while shielding. I call shielding while press left or right, rolling.

Have you even played that game?  You could dodge and roll like crazy.

EDIT:
Just so we're clear:

dodge      [doj]
 verb, dodged, dodg·ing, noun
–verb (used with object)
1.   to elude or evade by a sudden shift of position or by strategy

Okay, first of all, I'm not retarded. I know what a dodge is. And yes I've played the game. I don't care what the dictionary definition of dodging is. What you're talking about is called rolling, not dodging. While it can technically be labeled a "dodge", it is actually called a "roll". Dodging in smash is dodging in place, which is also called spot dodging, which SSB64 didn't have (in addition to air dodging), which is what I've been trying to say this whole time.

No, you said there is no dodging in SSB64.  Which is wrong.  There is dodging, achieved by rolling out of harms way.  After reading a bit, I see now that you have corrected your statement to specify spot dodging and air dodging.

The method used to dodge in SSB64 seems irrelevant here (rolling), since it is the ONLY dodging in that game.

Oh yes, massah.

I'm such an idiot. Discussing smash in a smash-related topic. Damn it! I'm so stupid!

I roll dodged that comment.

Anywho, what's spot dodging and air dodging and how is it done?  (Never played Melee.)

It's the same as rolling except you don't move, and air dodging you do in the air. All it does is grant the second of invulnerability without you moving.

What? Are you serious? Dude...if you liked SSB 64, you'd love Melee. It's such a great game.

To answer your question:

You know how you can roll if you shield and hit left or right? Well in Melee you can shield and hit down, causing you to dodge in place, after which you can follow up with an attack, grab, or whatever. Air dodging is simply hitting the shield button in the air, causing you do dodge an attack in midair. After airdodging, you are unable to attack, jump, or anything else until you land on the ground. They're both great additions to rolling.

Yeah, never owned a Gamecube, and I wasn't going to buy one for just one game (SSBM).  If I get a Wii, I might buy SSBM for kicks.

After air dodging most characters can't do anything, but if you air dodge with Link or Samus you can use their grab attack in the air right after you finish air dodging to grab onto edge of the platform.

Ken: watch some youtube Ssbm tourney videos and see all the crazy stuff you can do in Melee. :D

I'd get a Wii just to play SSBB, really. The problem, though, is that I can't find Wii consoles anywhere.

And on the subject of controller types, I personally can't imagine playing on anything other than the Gamecube controller. I've just gotten so used to it.

Yeah same here, except that I won't be playing with any of my friends because it's safer to tell them I DO NOT HAEV A WEE. Don't ask why. Aaaaanyway, I was searching for some info on Sakurai when I bumped into this. I know it's old, but I never even knew it existed. And it also gives me more hope than ever!

On an unrelated side-note, I wouldn't be surprised if the other third-party characters were Sonic, Simon and/or Megaman. You want to know who I would be surprised to see? 47, Iori, Duke Nukem. Yeah...

Also, I was hoping for Brawl to be like, really really balanced so proscene fags wouldn't whine about how unbalanced it is, and it seems that they are doing the exact same thing: making the game "with balance in mind". Cool! (I read this piece on the topic of the guy who translates Sakurai's blog on the Smashboards, also found by searching).

Haha, I got a Wii for the same reason, just because of Brawl. And about controllers, I'd have to say I'd use either GC or Classic ones. Idk but I don't think the Wiimote is accurate all by itself, and the Wiimote + Nunchuck combo seems awkward to me. Also, Sakurai has mentioned that they're going to implement a gimmicky use for the Wiimote's motion sensing capabilities, I think it would be something like Snake hitting Mr. Saturn or idk.

Is it me or the adventure mode starts to looks a lot like those old time side scrolling beat-em-up from the snes era? :fogetmmh:

The speed of the game will be “moderated,” and it was also mentioned in another update that “easiness” will be stressed in Brawl over the “finer details of combat.” What does this mean for us? Well, that the game will probably be a little easier to play.

Gay. I don't mind the moderation in speed or whatever, but if they're going to make the game less of a fighter just so some retarded 5 year-old can have fun playing, it's going to be pretty shitty. Why would you make a great game (SSB64), then make it even better and more in-depth (SSBM), and then go a step back? I like the "finer details of combat." Melee was good because it looks like a simple game at first, but once you start playing, you realize that it offers a lot more. Behind the simple appearance is a deep fighting game.

I really hope I'm just misinterpreting the whole thing, but the way that quote is worded makes me think it'll be made more "kid-friendly." I want an in-depth fighter, just like SSB64 and Melee. I hope they don't change it just because Nintendo's trying to target the casual gamer audience.

That's why they released the Wii, to target casual gamers, not hardcore gamers. Hopefully they won't shit all over the ssbb fighting engine. -_-

...which would be totally awesome.

And I doubt that SSBB will be nerfed.  SSB is probably as straightforward as you can get in a fighting game nowadays.  You can have a system target casual gamers and still have some "harder"core games.

I think you're misinterpreting it. When Sakurai made the first Kirby game, he wanted it to be appealing to both casual gamers and hardcore gamers, so I think he wants to make SSBB like his first Kirby game. I don't think he wants to make SSBB kid-friendly, I think he just wants to make it so that, for example, when a noob plays the game, they wouldn't get turned off because it would be too complicated. Maybe something along the lines of...easy to learn, hard to master.

...Rolling is dodging...

I like that the pacing is probably slower, though. I liked SSB's pacing more than SSBM's super-speed lightning fast stuff. Also I'd probably just use the Wiimote, with a nunchuck or not. The GC controller would add much of a new experience, and i'm not buying classic controllers for all my friends to use when they come over just for this game, so...

Also! Question? If Mario gets FLUDD, what are the odds of Luigi getting the Ghost Vacuum?

Wiimote + Nunchuck combo seems awkward to me.

I'm looking forwad to that combination the most. There's plenty of buttons if you think about it- the two trigger buttons on the nunchuck and two buttons on the wiimote that are easily in reach are plenty for smash when you think about, plut the directional pad and the 1 and 2 buttons.

With the nunchuck it feels like a gamecube controller that is split in half- which feels FUCKING INCREDIBLE. If you've played Twilight Princess you know what I mean- you don't have to force your hands together on this tiny little controller but can relax with your arms at your sides and play with the same feel of control.

Also fore the HARDCORE versus CASUAL debate fuck you all. Videogames are just videogames.
