just a few things i thought i'd mention:

comboing isnt necessary at all. i played on a crappy computer my first time through using an emulator and the best combo i ever got was probably 6 hits, purely out of luck. i'm playing it now and i havent gotten more than 3 hits so far. if you cant combo, you just have to level up a lot and learn to use items efficiently.
emulators mess up the rhythm combo system. it is not nearly as hard on GBS/DS or PSP as it is on an emulator on computer. using a keyboard creates some lag in the button pressing, too. tip: make sure your frame skip is set to 0.

learn to abuse the rolling hp counter (which is actually much much much slower than it was in earthbound).  anything that interrupts the "roll" will modify it based on the number it was set on.  this means if you end a fight even though you've taken lethal damage the counter will stop.  slower characters are often better because when you use a healing item it will heal you from whatever number the counter is currently set on.  say, for example you have 30 hp and you select nut bread.  the enemy attacks first dealing 10 hp but you ate the nut bread when the counter hit 25; you'll recover up to 55hp instead of 50.

not true. if you take mortal damage, but heal yourself before the HP bar reaches 0, you will have only how much you healed yourself. if you're gonna die but you use nut bread, your HP will be at 30 when it stops. still, the scrolling HP has saved me from a lot of tight situations, and it is even NECESSARY in the game at one point (those who have finished the game know what i mean).
semper games.

use spoilers next time.  i edited them into your post but still, that sounds like a pretty big spoiler!

anyway idk, i never played earthbound for more than twenty minutes before getting bored and turning it off.  maybe this will be a new chance for me to get into it.

Nintendo of America didn't expect anyone to. No... this game was too risky. They'd lose too much money translating it and sticking it into a cartridge.

Also, I am surprised to have seen so many references to Mother 1. There was definitely more here than in Mother 2/ Earthbound. The Magypsy houses for example... those are straight from the original Magicant.

Man I bet Nintendo are regretting it for not translating this and selling it.

Not one bit.  If it's not Pokemon or by Shigeru Miyamoto they don't care.

They could have localized this game in a year's time to still take advantage of the "end" of the GBA.  They still released released Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team (god what a mouthful) and Square had great success with FF6 so what's the deal Nintendo?

I'm now on Oh So Snake, and that annoying girl I've got decided to start learning her spell JUST AS I GET TO THE BOSS.

Although I've managed to get 14 hits before, meant that i trashed the clay bot in about 2 turns, but hey, I ain't complaining =]

while this is true, i think playing EarthBound (Mother 2) first adds to the story. there are characters from EarthBound that appear in Mother 3, and there are references to a lot of things from EarthBound, especially towards the end of the game. but Mother 3 is still awesome anyways, so it doesn't matter too much. if you play M3 now, make sure you play EB afterwards if you haven't, because it's a great game.

I feel really bad playing this because I've never beaten the other Mother games. I keep trying but I can't get far in any of them. Mother 1 and 2 are both really difficult and GRINDY I guess so I can't really get far. I hope this game isn't like that! Maybe this is a new leaf for the Mother series for me.

hey i've noticed that the highest combo i can achieve in battle is 16. is this because i'm bad or is 16 the limit or what? every time i get to 16 it feels like it just stops.

16s the limit, annoying only if you are good at comboing.

Otherwise it's a pain in the ass getting there.

I totally want to play this but there's so much nostalgia feeling apparently that I'm going to play the first two Mother's first I guess!!

I never played Mother 1 and Mother 2/Earthbound I only got past that Belch guy in the cave (unless I'm missing up bosses/locations) and never beat it.

I would be a horrible musician, I have trouble doing 3 hit combos. : (

I think this game definitely tops Mother 2.
