Also, the music is in an entirely different style than the music in Earthbound, but man, I really love the music in this game.

Are the three games linked in any way? Would it matter if I played Mother 3 before Earthbound?

They are linked I guess. They aren't linked in the sense that you would be missing out if you play them out of order though. Other than the world they are in and cameo like references to each other, the only real links are that Giygas is the main antagonist in 1, Pokey and Giygas are the antagonists of 2 (Earthbound), and Pokey is the main antagonist in 3.. Even then, they aren't brought up until the last minute revalations and final battles of each game.

I have been playing this on my PSP and I usually have the sound turned off (I am in public after all!).  One time I got a 4-hit combo and I was pretty proud because I couldn't hear any music

Also I just finished Chapter 1 and holy christ that crap is sad.  The way that the bad news is delivered to you is so unusual and unsettling!

I'm on Chapter 7, a lot of the bosses certainly have some unique patterns to them, and its great to finally have a high level PSI my favorite thing!

it was pretty cool in ohsoe castle when you see the glistening sword out in the courtyard and wess says something like "i asked the king about that sword once and he just said "forget about it", at least that is what i recall!" and i was thinking for a moment okay so the sword is the thing i'm supposed to get but then i realised it was just the game being cool and funny and i have decided i like this game a lot. i saved it at the end of chapter 2.

So uh what did Shigesato Itoi start out doing, wasn't he an actor or something? I'm just trying to figure out what he would compare to in America, like would the equivalent be if Paul Newman started developing videogames instead of salad dressing/etc

I find that this game is shorter then Earthbound (being a GBA game.) but this game requires a little bit more strategy in some battles and this game is more deep then earthbound. Earthbound can be beat in maybe 10 hours or less... (if you know what you're doing.)

I just started playing this game a few minutes ago and I have to say I am love with the music. I've already figured out how to play "Alec's Log House" on guitar if anyone's interested.

That's if you know what your doing. According to the save files on my psp, Earthbound took me..... shit. It doesn't record the time. It felt around 20-25 hours.

Mother 3 was exactly 30 hours for me though.

Does anyone else have occassional freezing etc on PSP?  Is there something I can do to make it better?

Ouch, I am only 7-8 hours into the game.

I pulled the needle and just got PSI my favorite thing Beta, and got Kumatora again, in Chapter 7, how long before I reach then end in play time?

8 hours and you're already in chapter 7? I smell walkthroughs! Seriously.... I have no idea how you did it... so I can't judge how long it would take for you to beat the rest of the game..

earthbound took me around 30 hours the first time through (when i was 8). i'm playing through it again and i'm probably at 7 hours, and i'm at Fourside. so i'm still kinda taking my time.

my first time through Mother 3 (in Japanese, with a walkthrough) took me 35 hours. i'm at 15 hours now and i'm on chapter 5 (i'm REEEAAALLY taking my time. it'll probably take me around 50 hours to beat it.) i think that it should be around 30 hours for someone who isn't taking their time too much. it's taking me so long because i'm concerned about fighting every enemy, getting all the backwards sprites in my enemy book, talking to everyone, etc...
